Utilizing Three Years of Epidemiological Data from Medical Missions in Cambodia to Shape the Mobile Medical Clinic Formulary
Objective: The purpose of this project was to gather epidemiological data on common diseases and medications dispensed during medical mission teams to Cambodia to shape the mobile medical clinic formulary.
Methods: Data for patients seen during week-long, mobile, medical clinics was collected in Cambodia during Septembers 2012 to 2014. Patientâs gender, age, weight, blood pressure, glucose, pertinent laboratory values, diagnoses, and medications dispensed were collected. Blood pressure and glucose were measured in patients 18 years and above. Data collected onto paper intake forms were transferred onto spreadsheets without patient identifying information and analyzed for aggregate means, common diseases, and most dispensed medications. This project received institutional review board approval.
Results: A total of 1,015 patients were seen over three years. Women made up 61.4% and the mean age was 41.8 years. The most common diagnosis was gastrointestinal disorders (22.9%), which included gastroesophageal reflux disease and intestinal parasites. Next, 20.1% of patients had hypertension (BP\u3e140/90), 18.0% had presbyopia, 15.4% had back and joint pain, followed by 8.8% with headache, including migraines. Approximately 8.4% of patients had hyperglycemia (RPG \u3e140 mg/dl). Top five medications dispensed were acetaminophen, omeprazole, multivitamin, ibuprofen and metformin. For hypertension, amlodipine and lisinopril were dispensed.
Conclusion: Cambodia lacks systematic public health collection of epidemiological data for prevalence of diseases. Hence, investigators collected and analyzed information from week-long mobile medical clinics over three years. Proton-pump inhibitors and H. pylori lab tests are recommended for gastrointestinal disorders. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are recommended for pain. Angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors and dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are recommended over diuretics since patients are already dehydrated. Metformin is recommended for diabetes. Vitamins and supplements are recommended for malnourished patients. Hemoglobin machine and urine test strips are suggested. This information should help future teams decide what medications and laboratory tests are most beneficial on medical teams in Cambodia
Spitzer Analysis of HII Region Complexes in the Magellanic Clouds: Determining a Suitable Monochromatic Obscured Star Formation Indicator
HII regions are the birth places of stars, and as such they provide the best
measure of current star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies. The close proximity
of the Magellanic Clouds allows us to probe the nature of these star forming
regions at small spatial scales. We aim to determine the monochromatic IR band
that most accurately traces the bolometric IR flux (TIR), which can then be
used to estimate an obscured SFR. We present the spatial analysis, via
aperture/annulus photometry, of 16 LMC and 16 SMC HII region complexes using
the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS bands. UV rocket data and SHASSA H-alpha data are
also included. We find that nearly all of the LMC and SMC HII region SEDs peak
around 70um, from ~10 to ~400 pc from the central sources. As a result, the
sizes of HII regions as probed by 70um is approximately equal to the sizes as
probed by TIR (about 70 pc in radius); the radial profile of the 70um flux,
normalized by TIR, is constant at all radii (70um ~ 0.45 TIR); the 1-sigma
standard deviation of the 70um fluxes, normalized by TIR, is a lower fraction
of the mean (0.05 to 0.12 out to ~220 pc) than the normalized 8, 24, and 160um
normalized fluxes (0.12 to 0.52); and these results are invariant between the
LMC and SMC. From these results, we argue that 70um is the most suitable IR
band to use as a monochromatic obscured star formation indicator because it
most accurately reproduces the TIR of HII regions in the LMC and SMC and over
large spatial scales. We also explore the general trends of the 8, 24, 70, and
160um bands in the LMC and SMC HII region SEDs, radial surface brightness
profiles, sizes, and normalized (by TIR) radial flux profiles. We derive an
obscured SFR equation that is modified from the literature to use 70um
luminosity, SFR(Mo/yr) = 9.7(0.7)x10^{-44} L(70)(ergs/s), which is applicable

The properties, origin and evolution of stellar clusters in galaxy simulations and observations
We investigate the properties and evolution of star particles in two simulations of isolated spiral galaxies, and two galaxies from cosmological simulations. Unlike previous numerical work, where typically each star particle represents one âclusterâ, for the isolated galaxies we are able to model features we term âclustersâ with groups of particles. We compute the spatial distribution of stars with different ages, and cluster mass distributions, comparing our findings with observations including the recent LEGUS survey. We find that spiral structure tends to be present in older (100s Myrs) stars and clusters in the simulations compared to the observations. This likely reflects differences in the numbers of stars or clusters, the strength of spiral arms, and whether the clusters are allowed to evolve. Where we model clusters with multiple particles, we are able to study their evolution. The evolution of simulated clusters tends to follow that of their natal gas clouds. Massive, dense, long-lived clouds host massive clusters, whilst short-lived clouds host smaller clusters which readily disperse. Most clusters appear to disperse fairly quickly, in basic agreement with observational findings. We note that embedded clusters may be less inclined to disperse in simulations in a galactic environment with continuous accretion of gas onto the clouds than isolated clouds and correspondingly, massive young clusters which are no longer associated with gas tend not to occur in the simulations. Caveats of our models include that the cluster densities are lower than realistic clusters, and the simplistic implementation of stellar feedback

A Multiwavelength Study of a Sample of 70 micron Selected Galaxies in the COSMOS Field I: Spectral Energy Distributions and Luminosities
We present a large robust sample of 1503 reliable and unconfused 70microm
selected sources from the multiwavelength data set of the Cosmic Evolution
Survey (COSMOS). Using the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS photometry, we estimate the
total infrared luminosity, L_IR (8--1000 microns), by finding the best fit
template from several different template libraries. The long wavelength 70 and
160 micron data allow us to obtain a reliable estimate of L_IR, accurate to
within 0.2 and 0.05 dex, respectively. The 70 micron data point enables a
significant improvement over the luminosity estimates possible with only a 24
micron detection. The full sample spans a wide range in L_IR, L_IR ~ 10^8-10^14
L_sun, with a median luminosity of 10^11.4 L_sun. We identify a total of 687
luminous, 303 ultraluminous, and 31 hyperluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs,
ULIRGs, and HyLIRGs) over the redshift range 0.01<z<3.5 with a median redshift
of 0.5. Presented here are the full spectral energy distributions for each of
the sources compiled from the extensive multiwavelength data set from the
ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (FIR). Using SED fits we find possible
evidence for a subset of cooler ultraluminous objects than observed locally.
However, until direct observations at longer wavelengths are obtained, the peak
of emission and the dust temperature cannot be well constrained. We use these
SEDs, along with the deep radio and X-ray coverage of the field, to identify a
large sample of candidate active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find that the
fraction of AGN increases strongly with L_IR, as it does in the local universe,
and that nearly 70% of ULIRGs and all HyLIRGs likely host a powerful AGN.Comment: 31 pages including 31 figures and 6 tables. Accepted for publication

The S-Star Cluster at the Center of the Milky Way: On the nature of diffuse NIR emission in the inner tenth of a parsec
Sagittarius A*, the super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way,
is surrounded by a small cluster of high velocity stars, known as the S-stars.
We aim to constrain the amount and nature of stellar and dark mass associated
with the cluster in the immediate vicinity of Sagittarius A*. We use
near-infrared imaging to determine the -band luminosity function
of the S-star cluster members, and the distribution of the diffuse background
emission and the stellar number density counts around the central black hole.
This allows us to determine the stellar light and mass contribution expected
from the faint members of the cluster. We then use post-Newtonian N-body
techniques to investigate the effect of stellar perturbations on the motion of
S2, as a means of detecting the number and masses of the perturbers. We find
that the stellar mass derived from the -band luminosity
extrapolation is much smaller than the amount of mass that might be present
considering the uncertainties in the orbital motion of the star S2. Also the
amount of light from the fainter S-cluster members is below the amount of
residual light at the position of the S-star cluster after removing the bright
cluster members. If the distribution of stars and stellar remnants is strongly
enough peaked near Sagittarius A*, observed changes in the orbital elements of
S2 can be used to constrain both their masses and numbers. Based on simulations
of the cluster of high velocity stars we find that at a wavelength of 2.2
m close to the confusion level for 8 m class telescopes blend stars will
occur (preferentially near the position of Sagittarius A*) that last for
typically 3 years before they dissolve due to proper motions.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, minor changes to match the published version in

Mapping the cold dust temperatures and masses of nearby Kingfish galaxies with Herschel
Taking advantage of the sensitivity and angular resolution of the Herschel
Space Observatory at far-infrared and submm wavelengths, we aim to characterize
the physical properties of cold dust within nearby galaxies and study the
robustness of the parameters we derive using different modified blackbody
models. For a pilot subsample of the KINGFISH program, we perform 2 temperature
fits of the Spitzer and Herschel photometric data (24 to 500um), with a warm
and a cold component, globally and in each resolution element.At global scales,
we observe ranges of values for beta_c(0.8 to 2.5) and Tc(19.1 to 25.1K).We
compute maps of our parameters with beta fixed or free to test the robustness
of the temperature and dust surface density maps we deduce. When the emissivity
is fixed, we observe temperature gradients as a function of radius.When the
emissivity is fitted as a free parameter, barred galaxies tend to have uniform
fitted emissivities.Gathering resolved elements in a Tc-beta_c diagram
underlines an anti-correlation between the two parameters.It remains difficult
to assess whether the dominant effect is the physics of dust grains, noise, or
mixing along the line of sight and in the beam. We finally observe in both
cases that the dust column density peaks in central regions of galaxies and bar
ends (coinciding with molecular gas density enhancements usually found in these
locations).We also quantify how the total dust mass varies with our assumptions
about the emissivity index as well as the influence of the wavelength coverage
used in the fits. We show that modified blackbody fits using a shallow
emissivity (beta_c < 2.0) lead to significantly lower dust masses compared to
the beta_c < 2.0 case, with dust masses lower by up to 50% if beta_c=1.5 for
instance.The working resolution affects our total dust mass estimates: masses

Spitzer Quasar and ULIRG Evolution Study (QUEST). IV. Comparison of 1-Jy Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies with Palomar-Green Quasars
We report the results from a comprehensive study of 74 ultraluminous infrared
galaxies (ULIRGs) and 34 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars within z ~ 0.3$ observed
with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). The contribution of nuclear
activity to the bolometric luminosity in these systems is quantified using six
independent methods that span a range in wavelength and give consistent results
within ~ +/-10-15% on average. The average derived AGN contribution in ULIRGs
is ~35-40%, ranging from ~15-35% among "cool" (f_25/f_60 =< 0.2) optically
classified HII-like and LINER ULIRGs to ~50 and ~75% among warm Seyfert 2 and
Seyfert 1 ULIRGs, respectively. This number exceeds ~80% in PG QSOs. ULIRGs
fall in one of three distinct AGN classes: (1) objects with small extinctions
and large PAH equivalent widths are highly starburst-dominated; (2) systems
with large extinctions and modest PAH equivalent widths have larger AGN
contributions, but still tend to be starburst-dominated; and (3) ULIRGs with
both small extinctions and small PAH equivalent widths host AGN that are at
least as powerful as the starbursts. The AGN contributions in class 2 ULIRGs
are more uncertain than in the other objects, and we cannot formally rule out
the possibility that these objects represent a physically distinct type of
ULIRGs. A morphological trend is seen along the sequence (1)-(2)-(3), in
general agreement with the standard ULIRG - QSO evolution scenario and
suggestive of a broad peak in extinction during the intermediate stages of
merger evolution. However, the scatter in this sequence, implies that black
hole accretion, in addition to depending on the merger phase, also has a strong

Production of highly-polarized positrons using polarized electrons at MeV energies
The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of
the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the
first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons
produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized
electron beam in a high- target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been
measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/, limited only by
the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron
capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized
