    Generalized BFT Formalism of Electroweak Theory in the Unitary Gauge

    We systematically embed the SU(2)×\timesU(1) Higgs model in the unitary gauge into a fully gauge-invariant theory by following the generalized BFT formalism.     Comment on "Ising model on a small world network"

    In the recent study of the Ising model on a small-world network by A. P\c{e}kalski [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 64}, 057104 (2001)], a surprisingly small value of the critical exponent β≈0.0001\beta \approx 0.0001 has been obtained for the temperature dependence of the magnetization. We perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the same model and conclude, via the standard finite-size scaling of various quantities,that the phase transition in the model is of the mean-field nature, in contrast to the work by A. P\c{e}kalski but in accord with other existing studies.Comment: to be published in PR

    Effect of nonmagnetic disorder on criticality in the "dirty" U(1) spin liquid

    We investigate the effect of nonmagnetic disorder on the stability of the algebraic spin liquid (ASLASL) by deriving an effective field theory, nonlinear σ\sigma model (NLσMNL{\sigma}M). We find that the anomalous critical exponent characterizing the criticality of the ASLASL causes an anomalous gradient in the NLσMNL{\sigma}M. We show that the sign of the anomalous gradient exponent or the critical exponent of the ASLASL determines the stability of the "dirty" ASLASL. A positive exponent results in an unstable fixed point separating delocalized and localized phases, which is consistent with our previous study [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 140405 (2004)]. We find power law suppression for the density of spinon states in contrast to the logarithmic correction in the free Dirac theory. On the other hand, a negative exponent destabilizes the ASLASL, causing the Anderson localization. We discuss the implication of our study in the pseudogap phase of high TcT_c cuprates

    Enhanced dynamical entanglement transfer with multiple qubits

    We present two strategies to enhance the dynamical entanglement transfer from continuous variable (CV) to finite dimensional systems by employing multiple qubits. First, we consider the entanglement transfer to a composite finite dimensional system of many qubits simultaneously interacting with a bipartite CV field. We show that, considering realistic conditions in the generation of CV entanglement, a small number of qubits resonantly coupled to the CV system is sufficient for an almost complete dynamical transfer of the entanglement. Our analysis also sheds further light on the transition between microscopic and macroscopic behaviours of composite finite dimensional systems coupled to bosonic fields (like atomic clouds interacting with light). Furthermore, we present a protocol based on sequential interactions of the CV system with some ancillary qubit systems and on subsequent measurements, allowing to probabilistically convert CV entanglement into `almost perfect' Bell pairs of two qubits.     Grappling with Issues of Learning Science from Everyday Experiences: An Illustrative Case Study

    There are different perceptions among researchers with regard to the infusion of everyday experience in the teaching of science: 1) it hinders the learning of science concepts; or, 2) it increases the participation and motivation of students in science learning. This article attempts to contemplate those different perspectives of everyday knowledge in science classrooms by using everyday contexts to teach grade 3 science in Singapore. In this study, two groups of grade 3 students were presented with a scenario that required them to apply the concept of properties of materials to design a shoe. Subsequently, the transcripts of classroom discussions and interactions were analyzed using the framework of sociocultural learning and an interpretative analytic lens. Our analysis suggests that providing an authentic everyday context is insufficient to move young learners of science from their everyday knowledge to scientific knowledge. Further, group interactions among young learners of science to solve an everyday issue need to be scaffolded to ensure meaningful, focused, and sustained learning. Implications for research in science learning among younger students are discussed

    Vision-model-based Real-time Localization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Autonomous Structure Inspection under GPS-denied Environment

    UAVs have been widely used in visual inspections of buildings, bridges and other structures. In either outdoor autonomous or semi-autonomous flights missions strong GPS signal is vital for UAV to locate its own positions. However, strong GPS signal is not always available, and it can degrade or fully loss underneath large structures or close to power lines, which can cause serious control issues or even UAV crashes. Such limitations highly restricted the applications of UAV as a routine inspection tool in various domains. In this paper a vision-model-based real-time self-positioning method is proposed to support autonomous aerial inspection without the need of GPS support. Compared to other localization methods that requires additional onboard sensors, the proposed method uses a single camera to continuously estimate the inflight poses of UAV.     Mirror duality and noncommutative tori

    In this paper, we study a mirror duality on a generalized complex torus and a noncommutative complex torus. First, we derive a symplectic version of Riemann condition using mirror duality on ordinary complex tori. Based on this we will find a mirror correspondence on generalized complex tori and generalize the mirror duality on complex tori to the case of noncommutative complex tori.Comment: 22pages, no figure
