    The Cubic Form Hypothesis and the Flying Geese Pattern Hypothesis of Income Distribution: The Case of Korea

    This paper examines the cubic form hypothesis and the flying geese pattern hypothesis of income distribution. We use time series data for the Gini coefficients of Korea for 1961-2006 and panel data calculated based on a household income survey for the period 1998-2003. We show; (1) The Korean economy has a cubic form inequality as shown in many advanced countries such as the U.S, U.K and Japan, and (2) Different relationships between income inequality and income level are observed among regions since less developed rural areas lagged behind more developed urban ones. Thus the pattern of the change of inequality by region in Korea has similarities to the flying geese pattern and the multiple catching up pattern that are processes of the industrialization of manufacturing.Income inequality, Cubic form, Flying geese pattern of development, Multiple catching-up

It ascertains that new-born technological inventions increase the degree of inequality; however, the degree of inequality declines as the technology disperses into the overall economy using OECD members’ data. Assuming that technological progress takes place repetitively throughout long term economic growth, the Kuznets curve does not converge to a single inverted U-shaped curve. Rather, it fluctuates through technological progress where technology appears as an invention, but with time it becomes common knowledge

    Differences in the Tongue Features of Primary Dysmenorrhea Patients and Controls over a Normal Menstrual Cycle

    Background. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships between tongue features and the existence of menstrual pain and to provide basic information regarding the changes in tongue features during a menstrual cycle. Methods. This study was conducted at the Kyung Hee University Medical Center. Forty-eight eligible participants aged 20 to 29 years were enrolled and assigned to two groups according to their visual analogue scale (VAS) scores. Group A included 24 females suffering from primary dysmenorrhea (PD) caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome with VAS ≥ 4. In contrast, Group B included 24 females with few premenstrual symptoms and VAS < 4. All participants completed four visits (menses-follicular-luteal-menses phases), and the tongue images were taken by using a computerized tongue image analysis system (CTIS). Results. The results revealed that the tongue coating color value and the tongue coating thickness in the PD group during the menstrual phase were significantly lower than those of the control group (P=0.031 and P=0.029, resp.). Conclusions. These results suggest that the tongue features obtained from the CTIS may serve as a supplementary means for the differentiation of syndromes and the evaluation of therapeutic effect and prognosis in PD.     Development of pulse diagnostic devices in Korea

    AbstractIn Korean medicine, pulse diagnosis is one of the important methods for determining the health status of a patient. For over 40 years, electromechanical pulse diagnostic devices have been developed to objectify and quantify pulse diagnoses. In this paper, we review previous research and development for pulse diagnostic devices according to various fields of study: demand analysis and current phase, literature studies, sensors, actuators, systems, physical quantity studies, clinical studies, and the U-health system. We point out some confusing issues that have been naively accepted without strict verification: original pressure pulse waveform and derivative pressure pulse waveform, pressure signals and other signal types, and minutely controlled pressure exertion issues. We then consider some technical and clinical issues to achieve the development of a pulse diagnostic device that is appropriate both technically and in terms of Korean medicine. We hope to show the history of pulse diagnostic device research in Korea and propose a proper method to research and develop these devices

    Experimental Characterization of Adsorption and Transport Properties for Advanced Thermo-Adsorptive Batteries

    Thermal energy storage has received significant interest for delivering both heating and cooling in electric vehicles, to minimize the use of the on-board electric batteries for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC). An advanced thermoadsorptive battery (ATB) is currently being developed, to provide both heating and cooling for an electric vehicle. We present a detailed thermophysical and physicochemical characterization of adsorptive materials for the development of the ATB. We discuss the feasibility of using contemporary adsorptive materials, such as zeolite 13X, by carrying out a detailed experimental characterization. In this study, zeolite 13X is combined with aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) as a binder to improve the thermal conductivity. We also investigate the effect of densification on the overall transport characteristics of the adsorbent-binder composite material. Accordingly, the effective thermal conductivity, surface area, adsorption capacity and surface chemistry were characterized using the laser flash technique, surface sorption analyzer, thermogravimetric analyzer, and x-ray scattering technique. Thermal conductivity predictions of both zeolite 13X and its combination with the binder were made with existing conductivity models. Thermal conductivity in excess of 0.4 W/mK was achieved with the addition of 6.4 wt.% of Al(OH)3. However, a 10.6 % decrease in adsorption capacity was also observed.     Confirmatory and Exploratory Factor Analysis for Validating the Phlegm Pattern Questionnaire for Healthy Subjects

    Background. Phlegm pattern questionnaire (PPQ) was developed to evaluate and diagnose phlegm pattern in Korean Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, but it was based on a dataset from patients who visited the hospital to consult with a clinician regarding their health without any strict exclusion or inclusion. In this study, we reinvestigated the construct validity of PPQ with a new dataset and confirmed the feasibility of applying it to a healthy population. Methods. 286 healthy subjects were finally included and their responses to PPQ were acquired. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted and the model fit was discussed. We extracted a new factor structure by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and compared the two factor structures. Results. In CFA results, the model fit indices are acceptable (RMSEA = 0.074) or slightly less than the good fit values (CFI = 0.839, TLI = 0.860). Many average variances extracted were smaller than the correlation coefficients of the factors, which shows the somewhat insufficient discriminant validity. Conclusions. Through the results from CFA and EFA, this study shows clinically acceptable model fits and suggests the feasibility of applying PPQ to a healthy population with relatively good construct validity and internal consistency
