Determining and addressing the needs of transracial Korean adoptees in higher education
One out of ten Korean Americans is estimated to be an adoptee (McGinnis, 2007). The majority of these adopted Korean Americans are transracial adoptees (TRAs), a group that has not received enough attention despite their unique experiences, perspectives, and needs. On top of the unique challenges TRAs face throughout life in general, most young adults go on to pursue a higher education which is a developmentally challenging time for anyone, pushing students to define their own values and personal identity (Long, 2012). According to the U.S. State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs (2018), there were 20,800 transracial Korean adoptees (TRKAs) adopted between 1999 and 2018. Hoffman and Peña’s (2013) study about TRKAs for application in higher education suggested that, based upon the previous statistic, there are probably a significant number of TRKAs currently in higher education and will be for the next several years. The purpose of this study was to advocate for these students, and identify the unique supports they may require in order to develop successfully as well rounded individuals
Service Attributes Available on Mobile Website
US m-commerce sales growth has been significant over the past few years. Total sales of products and services made using mobile phones and tablets reached $41 billion in 2013, accounting for 16% of total e-commerce sales. A majority of e-commerce consumers are expected to make purchases via mobile devices by 2017. Although mobile purchases are growing, most consumers still prefer to make actual purchases in physical stores or through retail websites (eMarketer, 2013)
Investigating the Role of Network Exteranlities and Perceived Value in User Loyalty Toward a SNS Site: Integrating Network Externalities and VTSL Model
As the number of SNSs increases, it is challenging for SNS providers to obtain and retain user loyalty toward a SNS site. By integrating both network externalities theory and VTSL (Value-Trust-Satisfaction-Loyalty) model, we propose a research model to investigate how perceived value derived from network externalities affects trust in SNS site and user satisfaction, which further lead to user loyalty. Data analysis was conducted using a total of 267 responses. The results show that perceived network size and perceived complementarity exert significant effect on functional, emotional, and social value. It is also shown that functional and social value influence positively on trust in SNS site, but emotional value is not related to trust. Functional and emotional value are found to be significant determinants of user satisfaction, however social value is not related to user satisfaction. User satisfaction is found to be a strong determinant of user loyalty. Given the findings, SNS providers need to increase network size and accommodate complementary services, applications, and supporting tools to obtain and retain user loyalty
Mental Imagery in an In-store Apparel Shopping Context: Do Women and Men Differ?
This study examined how mental imagery experienced during in-store shopping influences consumers’ affective (anticipatory emotion), cognitive (perceived ownership and decision satisfaction) responses and conative response (behavioral intentions) and further investigated how men and women differ in the way mental imagery influences consumer responses
Neural Architectural Nonlinear Pre-Processing for mmWave Radar-based Human Gesture Perception
In modern on-driving computing environments, many sensors are used for
context-aware applications. This paper utilizes two deep learning models, U-Net
and EfficientNet, which consist of a convolutional neural network (CNN), to
detect hand gestures and remove noise in the Range Doppler Map image that was
measured through a millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar. To improve the performance
of classification, accurate pre-processing algorithms are essential. Therefore,
a novel pre-processing approach to denoise images before entering the first
deep learning model stage increases the accuracy of classification. Thus, this
paper proposes a deep neural network based high-performance nonlinear
pre-processing method.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
Structural shift and increasing variety in Korea, 19602010 : empirical evidence of the economic development model by the creation of new sectors
In this paper, we examine the experiences of the Korean economy alongside theoretical knowledge of economic development and structural change. To demonstrate the generalized hypotheses on structural change, inputoutput tables of Korea, from 1960 to 2010, were analyzed. Our interest in taking time series of inputoutput tables originates from the following two issues. Firstly, we raise the question of whether Korean industrial structure changes have followed a certain pattern of structural shifts as well as increasing variety. Secondly, if so, it is questioned how the meso-level conditions for economic development could be explained from such a pattern. To search for answers, we adopt a model of the economic development by the creation of new sectors, named TEVECON, as our theoretical framework. Using this growth model, we derive hypotheses about how the structural change could affect economic development, and then we determine how the empirical analysis of the Korean economy verifies and deepens our understanding of structural change and economic development. This paper contributes to the empirical validation of the theoretical knowledge of economic development by the emergence of key sectors and the creation of new industries
Longitudinal relationship between emotion regulation and aggressive behavior: The moderating effect of caregiving
Aggressive behavior (or violence) among juvenile offenders is a major social problem in the United States. Emotion Regulation (ER) is a critical developmental task that cuts across adolescence. However, there is paucity of research directly linking deficits in ER to aggressive behavior among juvenile offenders. Furthermore, researchers have failed to examine how the effect of ER on aggressive behavior is influenced by the adolescents’ immediate environment, particularly by caregiving.
Acknowledging this gap in the current literature this study represents the first attempt to examine caregiving as a moderator in the relationship between ER and self-report of aggressive offending behavior among ethnically diverse juvenile offenders. Specifically, this study examined two caregiving dimensions (caregiver-adolescent affective relationships and monitoring) that affect development of ER and aggressive behavior from two theoretical perspectives: ecological-transactional model and attachment theory. Applying an ecological-transactional perspective, aggressive behavior was conceptualized as a byproduct of the mutual interaction between adolescent ontogenic development (ER) and the microsystem (caregiving). Attachment theory was integrated with the ecological-transactional model so as to delineate the underlying psychological mechanism regarding the dynamic interactions between ER and caregiving.
The present study used a longitudinal design analyzing the Pathways to Desistance study (n=892; 84% males; 21% White). The findings of the study suggest that changes in ER may cause—and do not merely predict—decline in juvenile offenders’ aggressive behavior. The interaction effect was small in magnitude; however, monitoring operated as a significant moderator in the relationship between changes in ER and changes in aggressive behavior. The results imply that the increased ability to regulate emotion is a strong protective factor against aggressive behavior. Furthermore, effective caregiver’s monitoring may promote positive development of cognitive ER. These relationships may operate synergetically, and may significantly contribute to decreases in aggressive behavior among juvenile offenders. The findings of this study hold strong implications for social work practitioners to treat juvenile offenders and their families. In an effort to reduce and prevent the perpetration of aggressive and violent behavior, social work practitioners in juvenile justice settings need to strengthen intervention efforts to improve ER skills and the quality of caregiving
