<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial probiotic organisms that contribute to improved nutrition, microbial balance, and immuno-enhancement of the intestinal tract, as well as anti-tumor activity. The aim of the present work was to study the growth inhibition of tumor cells by butanol extract of <it>Bifidobacterium adolescentis </it>isolated from healthy young Koreans.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The anti-proliferative activity of <it>B. adolescentis </it>isolates was assessed by XTT assays on three human colon cancer cell lines (Caco-2, HT-29, and SW480). The effects of <it>B. adolescentis </it>SPM0212 butanol extract on tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nitric oxide (NO) production were tested using the murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The butanol extract of <it>B. adolescentis </it>SPM0212 dose-dependently inhibited the growth of Caco-2, HT-29, and SW480 cells by 70%, 30%, and 40%, respectively, at 200 μg/mL. Additionally, the butanol extract of <it>B. adolescentis </it>SPM0212 induced macrophage activation and significantly increased the production of TNF-α and NO, which regulate immune modulation and are cytotoxic to tumor cells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The butanol extract of <it>B. adolescentis </it>SPM0212 increased activity of the host immune system and may improve human health by helping to prevent colon cancer as a biological response modifier.</p

Association of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with subclinical inflammation and 10-year cardiovascular disease risk as determined by Framingham risk scores in Korean male smokers

Various risk factors and the multifactorial pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been studied. We focused on the interaction between insulin resistance and inflammatory processes. Thus, we analyzed the association of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio with subclinical inflammation and CVD risk in male smokers. We retrospectively reviewed medical records from the Health Promotion Center of Severance Hospital in Korea between 2015 and 2017. Subjects were currently smoking men aged 30 to 59, with leukocyte counts within the normal range, for a total of 1,566. We grouped participants into four groups using the median TG/HDL ratio and the median leukocyte count. The odds ratio (OR) of high Framingham 10-year CVD risk (≥10%) was calculated using multiple logistic regression. The median Framingham 10-year CVD risk increased significantly from Group 1 (low leukocyte count, low TG/HDL ratio) to Group 4 (high leukocyte count, high TG/HDL ratio). The OR for Group 4 was 2.46 compared with Group 1 after adjusting for various CVD risk factors. In subgroup analysis, the OR of the highest leukocyte group was 1.57 compared to the lowest leukocyte group after adjusting for other variables. In conclusion, TG/HDL ratio and subclinical inflammation were positively related to CVD risk in Korean male smokers

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the feasibility of laparoscopic cornual resection for the treatment of heterotopic cornual pregnancy.Study designWomen who underwent laparoscopic cornual resection for heterotopic cornual pregnancy at our hospital between January 2003 and March 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. We evaluated significant parameters such as operative complications and postoperative pregnancy outcomes of concomitant pregnancy.ResultsThirteen patients with heterotopic cornual pregnancy were included in the study. All were pregnant through assisted reproductive technology, and the diagnosis was made at a median of 6+6 weeks (range 5+4–10+0). They were successfully treated with laparoscopic cornual resection and admitted for a median of 4 days (range, 2–7) postoperatively. The median operative time was 65min (range, 35–145min) and estimated blood loss was 200mL (range, 10–3000mL). There was a spontaneous abortion at 7+6 gestational weeks in a patient who received bilateral cornual resection. Seven patients delivered babies at term and 3 at preterm. All 10 women delivered without any maternal or neonatal complications. Two were lost to follow-up.ConclusionsLaparoscopic cornual resection is a feasible primary approach for the management of heterotopic cornual pregnancy

Neutrino reactions via neutral and charged current by Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation(QRPA)

We developed the quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) for the neutrino scattering off even-even nuclei via neutral current (NC) and charged cur- rent (CC). The QRPA has been successfully applied for the \beta and \beta\beta decay of relevant nuclei. To describe neutrino scattering, general multipole transitions by weak interactions with a finite momentum transfer are calculated for NC and CC reaction with detailed formalism. Since we consider neutron-proton (np) pairing as well as neutron-neutron (nn) and proton-proton (pp) pairing correlations, the nn + pp QRPA and np QRPA are combined in a framework, which enables to describe both NC and CC reactions in a consistent way. Numerical results for \nu-^{12}C, -^{56}Fe and -^{56}Ni reactions are shown to comply with other theoretical calculations and reproduce well available experimental data
