    Genome-wide analysis to predict protein sequence variations that change phosphorylation sites or their corresponding kinases

    We define phosphovariants as genetic variations that change phosphorylation sites or their interacting kinases. Considering the essential role of phosphorylation in protein functions, it is highly likely that phosphovariants change protein functions and may constitute a proportion of the mechanisms by which genetic variations cause individual differences or diseases. We categorized phosphovariants into three subtypes and developed a system that predicts them. Our method can be used to screen important polymorphisms and help to identify the mechanisms of genetic diseases

    Global media, audiences and transformative identities: femininities and consumption in South Korea

    The aim of this thesis is to examine the complexity of young women's identities in a context where accelerated global cultural flows have become enormously influential. In particular, this research examines how the consumption of global media affects young women's identities in postcolonial South Korea. Young Korean women's identities have been constructed through specific historical experiences: colonisation under Japanese rule; the division of Korea after the Korean War; and a compressed modernity with rapidly increasing consumption of global media during the 1990s. This research demonstrates how global culture has adapted to a particular local culture. It illustrates how women as audiences are in conflict with, and have to negotiate, newly introduced values through their consumption of global mass media. The research was based on a series of group interviews, including 21 group (101 women) interviews along with data collected from magazine and newspaper articles during nine, months' fieldwork in 2000. The analysis is structured around three key themes of women's cultural practice; consuming plastic surgery, the translation of romantic love and marriage, and the notion of femininity amongst married women. It provides a detailed example of postcolonial theory and argues that the global-local relationship is not monolithic but interactive; it forms part of the devolution of global media. The process of women's identity formation is therefore closely associated with the multi-layered and dynamic practice of struggling with, resisting, and negotiating with, an evolving and devolving global media, and this dominates women's contemporary cultural practice. That cultural practice needs to be contextualised and understood as part of a continuous local negotiation with global forces, as we seek to avoid an unnecessary dichotomy where women are seen as either oppressed or as subversive audiences

Although literature on second language pronunciation has thus far focused only on the difficulties of acquiring the target sound by adult learners, we argue that some target phonology rules are apparently as easy to acquire as instantaneous. We compared the F0 slope of stress assignment rules in English as spoken by 25 native speakers and by 46 Korean learners. The learners had an average of 10-minute instruction with less than a week of practice period. The stimulus words, sentences, and paragraph contrast the compound stress rule and nuclear stress rule in compound nouns and noun phrases such as the 'White House' and 'a white house.' We measured the F0 values of the speech data and normalized them by the average pitch of individual speakers. The result indicates that both the native speakers and the learners had an F0 drop (p < .01) for the compound nouns but an F0 rise (p < .01) for noun phrases. We also observed that the learners showed a more characteristic (p < .05) F0 slope than the native speakers did. We thus conclude that Korean learners easily learn stress assignment in English, which is realized as pitch. (Kangwon National University

    Empirical Validation of Objective Functions in Feature Selection Based on Acceleration Motion Segmentation Data

    Recent change in evaluation criteria from accuracy alone to trade-off with time delay has inspired multivariate energy-based approaches in motion segmentation using acceleration. The essence of multivariate approaches lies in the construction of highly dimensional energy and requires feature subset selection in machine learning. Due to fast process, filter methods are preferred; however, their poorer estimate is of the main concerns. This paper aims at empirical validation of three objective functions for filter approaches, Fisher discriminant ratio, multiple correlation (MC), and mutual information (MI), through two subsequent experiments. With respect to 63 possible subsets out of 6 variables for acceleration motion segmentation, three functions in addition to a theoretical measure are compared with two wrappers, k-nearest neighbor and Bayes classifiers in general statistics and strongly relevant variable identification by social network analysis. Then four kinds of new proposed multivariate energy are compared with a conventional univariate approach in terms of accuracy and time delay. Finally it appears that MC and MI are acceptable enough to match the estimate of two wrappers, and multivariate approaches are justified with our analytic procedures

    Evaluation of canine teeth crown reduction technique in macaques

    Background The reduction of canine teeth in adult males in whom permanent canine teeth eruption occurs should be considered due to the safety of humans or other monkeys. The objective of this study was to evaluate the complications of canine teeth reduction in macaques. Case presentation: Canine teeth reductions were performed in 8 rhesus and 2 cynomolgus macaques. Complications related to canine teeth reduction were evaluated at one to three week intervals during the experimental period by gross examination, CBC, and monitoring of appetite. One monkey showed a fistula due to periapical abscess and neutrophilia more than 2 years after canine teeth reduction, and extraction of the diseased canine tooth was performed; the other 9 monkeys showed no complications during the observation period. This report shows the effectiveness of canine teeth reduction with few complications. Conclusion Canine teeth reduction in male macaques is an acceptable procedure for reducing the severity of injury to humans or other monkeys.This work was carried out with the support of Cooperative Research Program for Agriculture Science and Technology Development (Project No.PJ01345302) Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea

    New Tubulocentric Insights for Diabetic Nephropathy: From Pathophysiology to Treatment

    The prevalence of diabetes is increasing worldwide, and one of the most important complications, diabetic nephropathy, constitutes a significant global health care and socioeconomic burden. Glomerular dysfunction is a major factor in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy. However, emerging evidence suggests that tubular damage also plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. This tubulocentric view shifts the focus markedly from glomeruli to proximal tubules, which might have an important role as a trigger or a driver in the early development and progression of diabetic nephropathy. Accordingly, numerous studies have focused on several different tubular damage markers that are clinically indicated as potential biomarkers for the early detection of diabetic nephropathy. Furthermore, these findings are relevant for identifying therapeutics for diabetic nephropathy that target the proximal tubules. This review outlines new tubulocentric insights into diabetic nephropathy, from pathophysiological mechanisms to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches
