    A modified formula using energy system contributions to calculate pure maximal rate of lactate accumulation during a maximal sprint cycling test

    Purpose: This study aimed at comparing previous calculating formulas of maximal lactate accumulation rate (νLa.max) and a modified formula of pure νLa.max (PνLa.max) during a 15-s all-out sprint cycling test (ASCT) to analyze their relationships.Methods: Thirty male national-level track cyclists participated in this study (n = 30) and performed a 15-s ASCT. The anaerobic power output (Wpeak and Wmean), oxygen uptake, and blood lactate concentrations (La−) were measured. These parameters were used for different calculations of νLa.max and three energy contributions (phosphagen, WPCr; glycolytic, WGly; and oxidative, WOxi). The PνLa.max calculation considered delta La−, time until Wpeak (tPCr−peak), and the time contributed by the oxidative system (tOxi). Other νLa.max levels without tOxi were calculated using decreasing time by 3.5% from Wpeak (tPCr −3.5%) and tPCr−peak.Results: The absolute and relative WPCr were higher than WGly and WOxi (p < 0.0001, respectively), and the absolute and relative WGly were significantly higher than WOxi (p < 0.0001, respectively); νLa.max (tPCr −3.5%) was significantly higher than PνLa.max and νLa.max (tPCr−peak), while νLa.max (tPCr−peak) was lower than PνLa.max (p < 0.0001, respectively). PνLa.max and νLa.max (tPCr−peak) were highly correlated (r = 0.99; R2 = 0.98). This correlation was higher than the relationship between PνLa.max and νLa.max (tPCr −3.5%) (r = 0.87; R2 = 0.77). νLa.max (tPCr−peak), PνLa.max, and νLa.max (tPCr −3.5%) were found to correlate with absolute Wmean and WGly.Conclusion: PνLa.max as a modified calculation of νLa.max provides more detailed insights into the inter-individual differences in energy and glycolytic metabolism than νLa.max (tPCr−peak) and νLa.max (tPCr −3.5%). Because WOxi and WPCr can differ remarkably between athletes, implementing their values in PνLa.max can establish more optimized individual profiling for elite track cyclists

    Atomic arrangement of van der Waals heterostructures using X-ray scattering and crystal truncation rod analysis

    Vanadium diselenide (VSe2) has intriguing physical properties such as unexpected ferromagnetism at the two-dimensional limit. However, the experimental results for room temperature ferromagnetism are still controversial and depend on the detailed crystal structure and stoichiometry. Here we introduce crystal truncation rod (CTR) analysis to investigate the atomic arrangement of bilayer VSe2 and bilayer graphene (BLG) hetero-structures grown on a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate. Using non-destructive CTR analysis, we were able to obtain electron density profiles and detailed crystal structure of the VSe2/BLG heterostructures. Specifically, the out-of-plane lattice parameters of each VSe2 layer were modulated by the interface compared to that of the bulk VSe2 1T phase. The atomic arrangement of the VSe2/BLG heterostructure provides deeper understanding and insight for elucidating the magnetic properties of the van der Waals heterostructure.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Optimal Band Selection for Airborne Hyperspectral Imagery to Retrieve a Wide Range of Cyanobacterial Pigment Concentration Using a Data-Driven Approach

    Understanding the concentration and distribution of cyanobacteria blooms is an important aspect of managing water quality problems and protecting aquatic ecosystems. Airborne hyperspectral imagery (HSI)-which has high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions-is widely used to remotely sense cyanobacteria bloom, and it provides the distribution of the bloom over a wide area. In this study, we determined the input spectral bands that were relevant in effectively estimating the main two pigments (PC, Phycocyanin; Chl-a, Chlorophyll-a) of cyanobacteria by applying data-driven algorithms to HSI and then evaluating the change in the spatio-temporal distribution of cyanobacteria. The input variables for the algorithms consisted of reflectance band ratios associated with the optical properties of PC and Chl-a, which were calculated by the selected hyperspectral bands using a feature selection method. The selected input variable was composed of six reflectance bands (465.7-589.6, 603.6-631.8, 641.2-655.35, 664.8-679.0, 698.0-712.3, and 731.4-784.1 nm). The artificial neural network showed the best results for the estimation of the two pigments with average coefficients of determination 0.80 and 0.74. This study proposes relevant input spectral information and an algorithm that can effectively detect the occurrence of cyanobacteria in the weir pool along the Geum river, South Korea. The algorithm is expected to help establish a preemptive response to the formation of cyanobacterial blooms, and to contribute to the preparation of suitable water quality management plans for freshwater environments

    Impact of Depression on Work Productivity and Its Improvement after Outpatient Treatment with Antidepressants

    AbstractObjectiveDepressive disorders influence socioeconomic burden at both the individual and organizational levels. This study estimates the lost productive time (LPT) and its resulting cost among workers with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared with a comparison group. It also estimates the change in productivity after 8 weeks of outpatient psychiatric treatment with antidepressants.MethodsWorking patients diagnosed with MDD without other major physical or mental disorders were recruited (n = 102), along with age- and sex-matched healthy controls from the Seoul Metropolitan area (n = 91). The World Health Organization's Health and Work Performance Questionnaire and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression were utilized to measure productivity and severity of depression, respectively, at baseline and at 8 weeks of treatment.ResultsThe LPT from absenteeism and presenteeism (reduced performance while present at work) was significantly higher among the MDD group. Workers with MDD averaged costs due to LPT at 33.4% of their average annual salary, whereas the comparison group averaged costs of 2.5% of annual salary. After 8 weeks of treatment, absenteeism and clinical symptoms of depression were significantly reduced and associated with significant improvement in self-rated job performance (31.8%) or cost savings of $7508 per employee per year.ConclusionsWe confirmed that significant productivity loss arises from MDD and that this loss can be reduced with psychiatric intervention after a time period as short as 8 weeks. Mental health professionals should work with employers to devise a cost-effective system to provide workers with accessible quality care

    Korean Patients with Superwarfarin Intoxication and Their Outcome

    This observational study aimed at evaluating recent superwarfarin intoxication of Korean patients. Ten patients were diagnosed as or highly suspicious for superwarfarin intoxication. Case report forms described by attending hematologists of the patients were collected and analyzed. Bleeding symptoms were varied among the patients. Patients uniformly showed prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated thromboplastin time (aPTT) with decreased activity of vitamin K dependent coagulation factors. Positive serum brodifacoum test results in 4 of 5 requested patients contributed to confirmatory diagnosis. Psychiatric interview revealed an attempted ingestion in one patient. High dose vitamin K1 therapy promptly corrected prolonged PT and aPTT, but hasty discontinuation caused repeated bleeding diathesis in 6 patients. Route of intoxication was unknown or not definite among 8 of 10 patients. Three patients had a possibility of environmental exposure considering their occupations: there might be intoxication by transdermal absorption or inhalation. Therefore, high dose and prolonged use of vitamin K1 therapy is necessary for effective detoxification. Further detailed investigation on environmental exposure and efforts to improve availability of the blood level test in clinic are requested

    Flexor Tenorrhaphy Using Absorbable Suture Materials

    BackgroundNonabsorbable sutures are favorable for repairing flexor tendons. However, absorbable sutures have performed favorably in an animal model.MethodsTwo-strand sutures using the interlocking modified Kessler method with polydioxanone absorbable sutures 4-0 were used to repair completely ruptured flexor tendons in 55 fingers from 41 consecutive patients. The medical records of average 42 follow up weeks were analyzed retrospectively. The data analyzed using the chi-squared test, and Fisher's exact test was used for postoperative complications. The results were compared with those of other studies.ResultsAmong the index, middle, ring, and little fingers were injured in 9, 17, 16, and 13 fingers, respectively. The injury levels varied from zone 1 to 5. Of the 55 digits in our study, there were 26 (47%) isolated flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) injuries and 29 (53%) combined FDP and with flexor digitorum superficialis injuries. Pulley repair was also conducted. Concomitant injuries of blood vessels and nerves were found in 17 patients (23 fingers); nerve injuries occurred in 5 patients (10 fingers). Two patients had ruptures (3.6%), and one patient had two adhesions (3.6%). Using the original Strickland criteria, all the patients were assessed to be excellent or good. Also, fibrosis and long-term foreign body tissue reactions such as stitch granuloma were less likely occurred in our study. Compared to the Cullen's report that used nonabsorbable sutures, there was no significant difference in the rupture or adhesion rates.ConclusionsTherefore, this study suggests that appropriate absorbable core sutures can be used safely for flexor tendon repairs
