    Equational and Rule-Based Programming: Visualization, Reliability, and Knowledge Base Generation

    This document describes developing an environment for effective use of functional/equational programs and rule-based expert systems. There are significant advantages in using these paradigms for reliability, parallelism, and accumulation of expertise in knowledge bases. The environment will make it easier to understand and use these paradigms, construct more reliable systems, and automatically enrich rule-based knowledge bases with the expertise. It will consist of the following components: (1) Visualization: for composing systems using a graphical interface and for understanding of algorithms. (2) Consistency Checking: for an equational and a rule-based language in accordance with the semantics of the languages. (3) Knowledge Base Generation and Testing: a translator that extracts expertise from existing programs and accumulates it as rules in knowledge bases; the rules are tested to enhance reliability. (4) Verification: interactive heterogeneous reasoning that consists of equational reasoning based on visual and textual information. These tools will be integrated in the proposed environment. The environment will greatly reduce the costs and increase the reliability of functional/equational and rule-based systems

    We provide a simple proof that the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations in Rd\mathbb{R}^{d} with any dā‰„3d\ge3 is ill-posed in critical Sobolev spaces, extending an earlier work of Bourgain and Li in the case d=3d = 3.     Dual priming oligonucleotide system for the multiplex detection of respiratory viruses and SNP genotyping of CYP2C19 gene

    Successful PCR starts with proper priming between an oligonucleotide primer and the template DNA. However, the inevitable risk of mismatched priming cannot be avoided in the currently used primer system, even though considerable time and effort are devoted to primer design and optimization of reaction conditions. Here, we report a novel dual priming oligonucleotide (DPO) which contains two separate priming regions joined by a polydeoxyinosine linker. The linker assumes a bubble-like structure which itself is not involved in priming, but rather delineates the boundary between the two parts of the primer. This structure results in two primer segments with distinct annealing properties: a longer 5ā€²-segment that initiates stable priming, and a short 3ā€²-segment that determines target-specific extension. This DPO-based system is a fundamental tool for blocking extension of non-specifically primed templates, and thereby generates consistently high PCR specificity even under less than optimal PCR conditions.     Expression of CPI-17 in smooth muscle during embryonic development and in neointimal lesion formation.

    Ca(2+) sensitivity of smooth muscle (SM) contraction is determined by CPI-17, an inhibitor protein for myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP). CPI-17 is highly expressed in mature SM cells, but the expression level varies under pathological conditions. Here, we determined the expression of CPI-17 in embryonic SM tissues and arterial neointimal lesions using immunohistochemistry. As seen in adult animals, the predominant expression of CPI-17 was detected at SM tissues on mouse embryonic sections, whereas MLCP was ubiquitously expressed. Compared with SM alpha-actin, CPI-17 expression doubled in arterial SM from embryonic day E10 to E14. Like SM alpha-actin and other SM marker proteins, CPI-17 was expressed in embryonic heart, and the expression was down-regulated at E17. In adult rat, CPI-17 expression level was reduced to 30% in the neointima of injured rat aorta, compared with the SM layers, whereas the expression of MLCP was unchanged in both regions. Unlike other SM proteins, CPI-17 was detected at non-SM organs in the mouse embryo, such as embryonic neurons and epithelium. Thus, CPI-17 expression is reversibly controlled in response to the phenotype transition of SM cells that restricts the signal to differentiated SM cells and particular cell types

    A Collaborative Molecular Modeling Environment Using a Virtual Tunneling Service

    Collaborative researches of three-dimensional molecular modeling can be limited by different time zones and locations. A networked virtual environment can be utilized to overcome the problem caused by the temporal and spatial differences. However, traditional approaches did not sufficiently consider integration of different computing environments, which were characterized by types of applications, roles of users, and so on. We propose a collaborative molecular modeling environment to integrate different molecule modeling systems using a virtual tunneling service. We integrated Co-Coot, which is a collaborative crystallographic object-oriented toolkit, with VRMMS, which is a virtual reality molecular modeling system, through a collaborative tunneling system. The proposed system showed reliable quantitative and qualitative results through pilot experiments

    Massive MIMO Systems With Low-Resolution ADCs: Baseband Energy Consumption vs. Symbol Detection Performance

    In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems using a large number of antennas, it would be difficult to connect high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to each antenna component due to high cost and energy consumption problems. To resolve these issues, there has been much work on implementing symbol detectors and channel estimators using low-resolution ADCs for massive MIMO systems. Although it is intuitively true that using low-resolution ADCs makes it possible to save a large amount of energy consumption in massive MIMO systems, the relationship between energy consumption using low-resolution ADCs and detection performance has not been properly analyzed yet. In this paper, the tradeoff between different detectors and total baseband energy consumption including flexible ADCs is thoroughly analyzed taking the optimal fixed-point operations performed during the detection processes into account. In order to minimize the energy consumption for the given channel condition, the proposed scheme selects the best mode among various processing options while supporting the target frame error rate. The numerous case studies reveal that the proposed work remarkably saves the energy consumption of the massive MIMO processing compared with the existing schemes.11Ysciescopu

    Cardiovascular risk factors of early atherosclerosis in school-aged children after Kawasaki disease

    PurposeThe aim of this study was to determine whether school-aged children with Kawasaki disease (KD) have an increased risk for early atherosclerosis.MethodsThe study included 98 children. The children were divided into the following groups: group A (n=19), KD with coronary arterial lesions that persisted or regressed; group B (n=49), KD without coronary arterial lesions; and group C (n=30), healthy children. Anthropometric variables and the levels of biochemical markers, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein A, apolipoprotein B, homocysteine, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and brachial artery stiffness using pulse wave velocity were compared among the three groups.ResultsThere were no significant differences in blood pressure and body index among the three groups. Additionally, there was no sex-specific difference. Moreover, the levels of triglyceride, HDL-C, apolipoprotein A, and hs-CRP did not differ among the three groups. However, the levels of total cholesterol (P=0.018), LDL-C (P=0.0003), and apolipoprotein B (P=0.029) were significantly higher in group A than in group C. Further, the level of homocysteine and the aortic pulse wave velocity were significantly higher in groups A and B than in group C (P=0.0001).ConclusionSchool-aged children after KD have high lipid profiles and arterial stiffness indicating an increased risk for early atherosclerosis
