    Competition between structural distortion and magnetic moment formation in fullerene C20_{20}

    Full text link
    We investigated the effect of on-site Coulomb interactions on the structural and magnetic ground state of the fullerene C20_{20} based on density-functional-theory calculations within the local density approximation plus on-site Coulomb corrections (LDA+UU). The total energies of the high symmetry (IhI_{h}) and distorted (D3dD_{3d}) structures of C20_{20} were calculated for different spin configurations. The ground state configurations were found to depend on the forms of exchange-correlation potentials and the on-site Coulomb interaction parameter UU, reflecting the subtle nature of the competition between Jahn-Teller distortion and magnetic instability in fullerene C20_{20}. While the non-magnetic state of the distorted D3dD_{3d} structure is robust for small UU, a magnetic ground state of the undistorted IhI_{h} structure emerges for UU larger than 4 eV when the LDA exchange-correlation potential is employed.Comment: 4 figures, 1 tabl

    The Light and Period Variations of the Eclipsing Binary AA Ursae Majoris

    We present new multiband CCD photometry for AA UMa made on 8 nights between January and March 2009; the RR light curves are the first ever compiled. Historical light curves, as well as ours, display partial eclipses and inverse O'Connell effects with Max I fainter than Max II. Among possible spot models, a cool spot on either of the component stars and its variability with time permit good light-curve representations for the system. A total of 194 eclipse timings over 81 yrs, including our five timings, were used for ephemeris computations. We found that the orbital period of the system has varied due to a periodic oscillation overlaid on an upward parabolic variation. The continuous period increase at a fractional rate of ++1.3×\times1010^{-10} is consistent with that calculated from the W-D code and can be interpreted as a thermal mass transfer from the less to the more massive secondary star at a rate of 6.6×\times108^{-8} M_\odot yr1^{-1}. The periodic component is in satisfactory accord with a light-time effect due to an unseen companion with a period of 28.2 yrs, a semi-amplitude of 0.007 d, and a minimum mass of M3sini3M_3 \sin i_3=0.25 MM_\odot but this period variation could also arise from magnetic activity.Comment: 23 pages, including 5 figures and 8 tables, accepted for publication in PAS

    Rate-dependent inhomogeneous-to-homogeneous transition of plastic flows during nanoindentation of bulk metallic glasses: Fact or artifact?

    There has been considerable controversy over the "apparent" rate-dependent transition from inhomogeneous-to-homogeneous flow during nanoindentation of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) at room temperature: whether it arises from the existence of homogeneous-flow regime in BMG deformation map or is an artifact due to the instrumental blurring at high rates. To provide a clue to address this dispute, the authors performed nanoindentation experiments on a Zr-based BMG with two geometrically self-similar indenters. The results are discussed in terms of the discrete plasticity ratio, which is a useful parameter in analyzing the contribution of inhomogeneous plasticity to the total plastic deformation.open232

    Numerical Analysis of Saturated Sand Under Dynamic Loads

    In this study, the behavior of reclaimed soils including the effects of excess pore water pressure and the loss of strength under dynamic loads or earthquakes are investigated and simulated. The constitutive model based on the disturbed state concept (DSC) is introduced and DSC-DYN2D program is utilized in a numerical analysis. In the laboratory test, quasi-static and cyclic triaxial tests were carried out to determine parameters for the numerical analysis. Field tests were executed in Inchon International Airport with a 10 tons hydraulic hammer. In the field test, the data of dynamic loads and excess pore water pressure were measured using a 3-D geophone and a pressure transducer respectively, The data of field tests showed the accumulation of excess pore water pressure when rapid dynamic loads were applied. Especially, a back-prediction program based on DSC model is developed and verified its accuracy using various parameters from the cyclic triaxial test. As the results of numerical simulation, the predicted trends for excess pore water pressure compare well with the observed data. Based on the result of this research, it is found that the numerical analysis based on the DSC model is compatible to predict the softening behavior of saturated reclaimed soils under dynamic loads

    One-dimensional broadband phononic crystal filter with unit cells made of two non-uniform impedance-mirrored elements

    A one-dimensional finite-sized phononic crystal(PC) made of a specially-configured unit cell is proposed to realize broad bandpass, high-performance filtering. The unit cell is specially-configured with two elements having mirrored impedance distributions of each other. One element has a non-uniform impedance distribution that is so engineered as to maximize wave transmission in the pass band and to minimize transmission in the adjacent stop band while the other, exactly the mirrored distribution. The mirroring approach naturally yields the overall impedance contrast within the resulting unit cell, necessary to form stop bands in a PC of the unit cells. More importantly, the good transmission performance of the orginally-engineered element can be preserved by the approach because no additional impedance mismatch is introduced along the interface of the two impedance-mirrored elements. Extraordinary performance of the PC filter made of the proposed unit cell, such as high transmission, large bandwidth and sharp roll-off, is demonstrated by using one-dimensional longitudinal elastic wave problems.
