Competition between structural distortion and magnetic moment formation in fullerene C
We investigated the effect of on-site Coulomb interactions on the structural
and magnetic ground state of the fullerene C based on
density-functional-theory calculations within the local density approximation
plus on-site Coulomb corrections (LDA+). The total energies of the high
symmetry () and distorted () structures of C were
calculated for different spin configurations. The ground state configurations
were found to depend on the forms of exchange-correlation potentials and the
on-site Coulomb interaction parameter , reflecting the subtle nature of the
competition between Jahn-Teller distortion and magnetic instability in
fullerene C. While the non-magnetic state of the distorted
structure is robust for small , a magnetic ground state of the undistorted
structure emerges for larger than 4 eV when the LDA
exchange-correlation potential is employed.Comment: 4 figures, 1 tabl
Decision Supporting Methodology and System Based on Theory of Constraints for Making an Optimal Product Portfolio Strategy in Shipbuilding Industry
Shipbuilding is a typical ‘build to order’ industry. It has a business model that generates revenues from building various ships and offshore products in accordance with owner’s requirements at each production stage. Under uncertainty in shipping market, it is very essential for the shipbuilder to prepare the fast and competitive decision for product portfolio strategy in order to maximize contribution margin by exploiting production facilities and constraints. TOC(theory of constrains) proposed by Dr. goldratt in 1979 has been evolved into a management philosophy with practices and principles spanning a multitude of operations management sub-disciplines.[1] In this study, we introduce the unique decision supporting methodology for the optimal product portfolio sets based on TOC. This methodology is established by adopting the concept of Drum Buffer Rope (DBR)[2] in constraints planning and Throughput Account (TA)[3][4][5] in management accounting of TOC. In addition, Decision Supporting System (DSS)[6] is implemented by applying this methodology. This DSS system provides a throughput estimator with reflecting the cost structure of shipbuilding industry and a resource simulator built on heuristic algorithms to operate major constraint-resources in shipyard such as dock, quay and pre-erection area etc. Several examples are presented to show that the proposed methodology and system can effectively support the strategic decision-making process of a global shipbuilding company
Can Sodium Abundances of A-Type Stars Be Reliably Determined from Na I 5890/5896 Lines?
An extensive non-LTE abundance analysis based on Na I 5890/5896 doublet lines
was carried out for a large unbiased sample of ~120 A-type main-sequence stars
(including 23 Hyades stars) covering a wide v_e sin i range of ~10--300 km/s,
with an aim to examine whether the Na abundances in such A dwarfs can be
reliably established from these strong Na I D lines. The resulting abundances
([Na/H]_{58}), which were obtained by applying the T_eff-dependent
microturbulent velocities of \xi ~2--4 km/s with a peak at T_eff ~ 8000 K
(typical for A stars), turned out generally negative with a large diversity
(from ~-1 to ~0), while showing a sign of v_e sin i-dependence (decreasing
toward higher rotation). However, the reality of this apparently subsolar trend
is very questionable, since these [Na/H]_{58} are systematically lower by
~0.3--0.6 dex than more reliable [Na/H]_{61} (derived from weak Na I 6154/6161
lines for sharp-line stars). Considering the large \xi-sensitivity of the
abundances derived from these saturated Na I D lines, we regard that
[Na/H]_{58} must have been erroneously underestimated, suspecting that the
conventional \xi values are improperly too large at least for such strong
high-forming Na I 5890/5896 lines, presumably due to the depth-dependence of
\xi decreasing with height. The nature of atmospheric turbulent velocity field
in mid-to-late A stars would have to be more investigated before we can
determine reliable sodium abundances from these strong resonance D lines.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Publ. Astron. Soc.

Blending in Future Space-based Microlensing Surveys
We investigate the effect of blending in future gravitational microlensing
surveys by carrying out simulation of Galactic bulge microlensing events to be
detected from a proposed space-based lensing survey. From this simulation, we
find that the contribution of the flux from background stars to the total
blended flux will be equivalent to that from the lens itself despite the
greatly improved resolution from space observations, implying that
characterizing lenses from the analysis of the blended flux would not be easy.
As a method to isolate events for which most of the blended flux is
attributable to the lens, we propose to use astrometric information of source
star image centroid motion. For the sample of events obtained by imposing a
criterion that the centroid shift should be less than three times of the
astrometric uncertainty among the events for which blending is noticed with
blended light fractions , we estimate that the contamination of
the blended flux by background stars will be less than 20% for most () of the sample events. The expected rate of these events is
events/yr, which is large enough for the statistical analysis of the lens
