Studies revealed numerous benefits that service learning offers both to students and to the organizations served. They include students developing a greater awareness of social problems and students becoming eager volunteers following class community service work. Student engagement in the learning materials is also increased by the community service work. The course was designed to help students understand how trend forecasts are created and employed by various professionals in the fashion industry to improve a firm’s competitiveness in the marketplace with a dual focus on both consumer and business aspects

Community Service Projects Integrated into Product Innovation and Management Class

Since the National Community Service Trust Act of 1993, interest in service learning has been strengthened by the work of numerous national organizations that combine service and educational learning (Bringle & Hatcher, 1996). For example, in Ernest Boyer’s article “Creating the new American college” (1994), he showed concerns that higher education should reconsider its mission to educate students for a life as responsible citizens rather than educate students only for a career. In order to address his concern, service learning with the goal of educating students about their public responsibilities and their roles as citizens has become essential

Hyalinizing Spindle Cell Tumor with Giant Rosettes with Pulmonary Metastasis After a Long Hiatus: A Case Report

"Hyalinizing spindle cell tumor with giant rosettes" (HSCTGR) is a recently described tumor, which is regarded as an unusual variant of low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma. Proof of a metastatic potential was lacking. The patient in the report was a 35-yr-old woman who showed multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules with massive pleural effusion in the right side. She had a history of a mass excision in the right thigh 11 yrs ago at another hospital, which was reported as a "leiomyoma". Two years before this presentation, the patient received a routine chest radiograph which demonstrated bilateral multiple pulmonary nodules. A lobectomy of the left upper lung was performed. The histological findings revealed a well-circumscribed nodule that was characterized by a spindle-shaped fibrous to hyalinized stroma with criss-crossing short fascicles and giant collagen rosettes surrounded by a rim of spindle-shaped cells. Electron microscopy confirmed the fibroblastic nature of the tumor. This case, in addition to at least two other cases reported in the literature, demonstrates that the HSCTGR is a malignant neoplasm with the capacity to metastasize after a long hiatus

The purpose of this study is first, to describe the fashion adopted by young women within two different cultures---the United States and Korea---in the 1970s; second, to analyze qualitatively the differences and similarities of the fashion in the two cultures, and third, interpret the reasons for the similarities and differences in historical, cultural, and socio-psychological contexts.;This study adopted a qualitative approach. The procedures were as followings: First, examining magazines and compiling a stimulus set to use during interviews, second preliminary interviews, third sample selection, fourth, data collection, and finally data analysis. For data collection, in-depth interviews with open-ended questions were conducted. A convenience sample of 15 American women and 15 Korean women who were college students in the 1970s, were selected.;Similarities in clothing styles or behaviors between the two cultures found in this study were due to a common "spirit of the times" and the characteristics of the respondents as female adolescence group. At the same time, differences persisted due to the diversity of values as well as the different stages of the fashion industry in the two cultures.;All aspects of culture were closely related to each other and fashion reflects those values. In the United States individualism and masculinity were dominant cultural values revealed in women's adoption of characteristic styles and behaviors. Koreans held onto collectivism and femininity, yet underwent the process of melding traditional and newly adopted values in their acculturation to the West.;The findings of this cross-cultural study will help the area of textiles and clothing to better understand the dynamics in fashion and value changes and provide deeper insights into cultural aspects of fashion.</p

Sustainable New Product Development for Ten Thousand Villages, a Fair-Trade Social Enterprise: Empowering Women and Economic Development through Problem-Based Service Learning

    No full text
Universities have an important role in advancing sustainable development by educating future professionals. As an effective approach to scaling sustainability education, the author implemented a problem-based service-learning (PBSL) project with Ten Thousand Villages, a fair-trade non-profit social enterprise (SE), into a Product Innovation and Management course at a public university in the US. The purpose of this study was first, to explore the significance of, strategies for, and barriers to sustainability education in higher education; second, to present a case of a PBSL project systemically incorporated into a course; and third, to propose a PBSL model to facilitate its wide adoption in other courses. A qualitative research method was adopted employing open coding and the constant comparative method to analyze students’ written reflections. Unlike the hypothesized model with a commercial enterprise, the findings revealed that fourteen new themes emerged for the PBSL model; most were consistent with the characteristics of SE. Through this study, educators and practitioners will be able to recognize the urgent need for the scaling of sustainability education and will be inspired to adopt problem-based service learning as a viable pedagogical approach. Further, the study will provide educators and practitioners with insights into its effective implementation into higher education
