Asymptotic behavior of the density of states on a random lattice
We study the diffusion of a particle on a random lattice with fluctuating
local connectivity of average value q. This model is a basic description of
relaxation processes in random media with geometrical defects. We analyze here
the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalue distribution for the Laplacian
operator. We found that the localized states outside the mobility band and
observed by Biroli and Monasson (1999, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 32 L255), in a
previous numerical analysis, are described by saddle point solutions that
breaks the rotational symmetry of the main action in the real space. The
density of states is characterized asymptotically by a series of peaks with
periodicity 1/q.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
{BOAO Photometric Survey of Galactic Open Clusters. II. Physical Parameters of 12 Open Clusters
We have initiated a long-term project, the BOAO photometric survey of open
clusters, to enlarge our understanding of galactic structure using UBVI CCD
photometry of open clusters which have been little studied before. This is the
second paper of the project in which we present the photometry of 12 open
clusters. We have determined the cluster parameters by fitting the Padova
isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. All the clusters
except for Be 0 and NGC 1348 are found to be intermediate-age to old (0.2 - 4.0
Gyrs) open clusters with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.0.Comment: 11 page
Stacking disorder in α−RuCl_{3} investigated via x-ray three-dimensional difference pair distribution function analysis
The van der Waals layered magnet α − RuCl_{3} offers tantalizing prospects for the realization of Majorana quasiparticles. Efforts to understand this are, however, hampered by inconsistent magnetic and thermal transport properties likely coming from the formation of structural disorder during crystal growth, postgrowth processing, or upon cooling through the first order structural transition. Here, we investigate structural disorder in α − RuCl_{3} using x-ray diffuse scattering and three-dimensional difference pair distribution function analysis. We develop a quantitative model that describes disorder in α − RuCl_{3} in terms of rotational twinning and intermixing of the high- and low-temperature structural layer stacking. This disorder may be important to consider when investigating the detailed magnetic and electronic properties of this widely studied material
Multicomponent fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene
We report observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in high
mobility multi-terminal graphene devices, fabricated on a single crystal boron
nitride substrate. We observe an unexpected hierarchy in the emergent FQHE
states that may be explained by strongly interacting composite Fermions with
full SU(4) symmetric underlying degrees of freedom. The FQHE gaps are measured
from temperature dependent transport to be up 10 times larger than in any other
semiconductor system. The remarkable strength and unusual hierarcy of the FQHE
described here provides a unique opportunity to probe correlated behavior in
the presence of expanded quantum degrees of freedom.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Spin and valley quantum Hall ferromagnetism in graphene
In a graphene Landau level (LL), strong Coulomb interactions and the fourfold
spin/valley degeneracy lead to an approximate SU(4) isospin symmetry. At
partial filling, exchange interactions can spontaneously break this symmetry,
manifesting as additional integer quantum Hall plateaus outside the normal
sequence. Here we report the observation of a large number of these quantum
Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states, which we classify according to their
real spin structure using temperature-dependent tilted field magnetotransport.
The large measured activation gaps confirm the Coulomb origin of the broken
symmetry states, but the order is strongly dependent on LL index. In the high
energy LLs, the Zeeman effect is the dominant aligning field, leading to real
spin ferromagnets with Skyrmionic excitations at half filling, whereas in the
`relativistic' zero energy LL, lattice scale anisotropies drive the system to a
spin unpolarized state, likely a charge- or spin-density wave.Comment: Supplementary information available at http://pico.phys.columbia.ed
Rotation Symmetry Spontaneous Breaking of Edge States in Zigzag Carbon Nanotubes
Analytical solutions of the edge states were obtained for the (N, 0) type
carbon nanotubes with distorted ending bonds. It was found that the edge states
are mixed via the distortion. The total energies for N=5 and N>=7 are lower in
the asymmetric configurations of ending bonds than those having axial rotation
symmetry. Thereby the symmetry is breaking spontaneously. The results imply
that the symmetry of electronic states at the apex depends on the occupation;
the electron density pattern at the apex could change dramatically and could be
controlled by applying an external field.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure
