Simultaneous Determination of Seven Constituents in Herbal Prescription Jaeumganghwa-Tang Using HPLC-PDA
A simple and accurate high-performance liquid chromatographic method was applied to the quantitative analysis of seven components of the traditional herbal prescription Jaeumganghwa-tang (JGT), including 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde, albiflorin, paeoniflorin, liquiritin, ferulic acid, nodakenin, and glycyrrhizin. All seven compounds were separated in less than 40 min on a Gemini C18 column at 40°C by gradient elution using 1.0% (v/v) aqueous acetic acid and acetonitrile containing 1.0% (v/v) acetic acid as mobile phase. The flow rate was 1.0 mL/min and the detector was a photodiode array (PDA) set at 230 nm, 254 nm, 280 nm, and 330 nm. The calibration curves showed good linearity (r2 > 0.9998) in different concentration ranges. The recovery of each component was in the range of 91.47–102.62%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs, %) less than 4.5%. The RSDs (%) for intra- and interday precision were 0.06–2.85% and 0.06–2.83%, respectively. The concentrations of the seven components in JGT were in the range 0.74–5.48 mg/g
Sources of Infestation, Biology, Damage by and control of Megaselia Rufipes Meigen (Diptera: Phoridae) on oil Palm Seeds
A study was carried out to identify sources of infestation by the Megaselia rufipes Meigen (Diptera: Phoridae) on some germinated oil palm seeds in the Seed Production facilities of the CSIR-Oil Palm Research Institute. The study also covered the identification of the pest, some aspects of the biology, cost of damage and control. It was observed that the sources of infestation was from poor sorting of seeds including broken and dead seeds mixed up with healthy seeds which were sent to the Germinator house from the Seed-store for initiation of germination process. Such unhealthy, poor quality seeds undergo fermentation during post-heating soaking process, emitting attractant(s). Adult flies which had hatched out in the Germinator room responded to the attractant(s) when such poor quality seeds were exposed in the open for air-drying. The flies’ activities caused damage to seeds including rotten kennels and seeds, empty shells and dead developing embryos in transparent polyethylene storage bags. The highest infestation was on 2052 seeds out of a total production of 582,503 germinated seeds in batch number 5 and the lowest was 223 seeds out of 241,089 seeds in batch number 6. Fermenting seeds among healthy germinating seeds in improper sealed/ broken storage polyethylene bags attracted adult flies which gained access to the seeds through holes. The fly was identified as Megaselia rufipes Meigen (Diptera: Phoridae). Its pupal duration was found to be 9-10 days. Bioassay results showed that the fly could be controlled effectively by dipping the seeds in Fenitrothion insecticide. Keywords: fly, insect pest, Megaselia rufipes, oil palm seed, infestatio
Small molecule-mediated tribbles homolog 3 promotes bone formation induced by bone morphogenetic protein-2.
Although bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP2) has demonstrated extraordinary potential in bone formation, its clinical applications require supraphysiological milligram-level doses that increase postoperative inflammation and inappropriate adipogenesis, resulting in well-documented life-threatening cervical swelling and cyst-like bone formation. Recent promising alternative biomolecular strategies are toward promoting pro-osteogenic activity of BMP2 while simultaneously suppressing its adverse effects. Here, we demonstrated that small molecular phenamil synergized osteogenesis and bone formation with BMP2 in a rat critical size mandibular defect model. Moreover, we successfully elicited the BMP2 adverse outcomes (i.e. adipogenesis and inflammation) in the mandibular defect by applying high dose BMP2. Phenamil treatment significantly improves the quality of newly formed bone by inhibiting BMP2 induced fatty cyst-like structure and inflammatory soft-tissue swelling. The observed positive phenamil effects were associated with upregulation of tribbles homolog 3 (Trib3) that suppressed adipogenic differentiation and inflammatory responses by negatively regulating PPARγ and NF-κB transcriptional activities. Thus, use of BMP2 along with phenamil stimulation or Trib3 augmentation may be a promising strategy to improve clinical efficacy and safety of current BMP therapeutics
Plasma-Enhanced ALD of TiO2 Thin Films on SUS 304 Stainless Steel for Photocatalytic Application
Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) of TiO2 thin films using Ti(NMe2)(4) [tetrakis(dimethylamido) Ti] and O-2 plasma were prepared on stainless steel to show the self-cleaning effect. The TiO2 thin films deposited on stainless steel have high growth rate, large surface roughness, and low impurities. The film deposited below 200 degrees C was amorphous, while the films deposited at 300 and 400 degrees C showed anatase and rutile phases, respectively. The contact angle measurements on crystalline PE-ALD TiO2 thin films exhibited superhydrophilicity after UV irradiation. The TiO2 thin film with anatase phase deposited at 300 degrees C showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency, which is higher than on Activ glass or thermal ALD TiO2 films. We suggest that anatase structure and large surface area of TiO2 thin film on stainless steel are the main factors for the high photocatalytic efficiency. (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society. The N-terminal methionine of cellular proteins as a degradation signal
The Arg/N-end rule pathway targets for degradation proteins that bear specific unacetylated N-terminal residues while the Ac/N-end rule pathway targets proteins through their N-infinity-terminally acetylated (Nt-acetylated) residues. Here, we show that Ubr1, the ubiquitin ligase of the Arg/N-end rule pathway, recognizes unacetylated N-terminal methionine if it is followed by a hydrophobic residue. This capability of Ubr1 expands the range of substrates that can be targeted for degradation by the Arg/N-end rule pathway because virtually all nascent cellular proteins bear N-terminal methionine. We identified Msn4, Sry1, Arl3, and Pre5 as examples of normal or misfolded proteins that can be destroyed through the recognition of their unacetylated N-terminal methionine. Inasmuch as proteins bearing the Nt-acetylated N-terminal methionine residue are substrates of the Ac/N-end rule pathway, the resulting complementarity of the Arg/N-end rule and Ac/N-end rule pathways enables the elimination of protein substrates regardless of acetylation state of N-terminal methionine in these substrates.X117863Ysciescopu
Flavor SU(3) symmetry and QCD factorization in and decays
Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of
charmless decays. All the relevant
topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the
QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation
ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be
important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this
work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative)
topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitative but somewhat
model-dependent) QCD factorization (QCDF) approach in these decays, by
explicitly showing how to translate each flavor SU(3) amplitude into the
corresponding terms in the QCDF framework. After estimating each flavor SU(3)
amplitude numerically using QCDF, we discuss various physical consequences,
including SU(3) breaking effects and some useful SU(3) relations among decay
amplitudes of and .Comment: 47 pages, 3 figures, 28 table
RGO/Nylon-6 composite mat with unique structural features and electrical properties obtained from electrospinning and hydrothermal process
In this work, the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets were effectively uploaded through nylon-6 fibers using combined process of electrospinning and hydrothermal treatment. Good dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) with nylon-6 solution could allow to upload GO sheets through nylon-6 fibers and facilitate the formation of spider-wave-like nano-nets during electrospinning. GO sheets present on/into nylon-6 spider-wave-like nano-nets were further reduced to RGO using hydrothermal treatment. The impregnated GO sheets into nylon-6 nanofibers and their reduction during hydrothermal treatment were confirmed by FE-SEM, TEM, FT-IR and Raman spectra. The electrical characteristics of pristine nylon-6, GO/nylon-6 and RGO/nylon-6 nanofibers were investigated and it was found that RGO/nylon-6 composite mat had better electrical conductivity than others. The formation of spider-wave-like nano-nets as well as indirect route of incorporation of RGO sheets on electrospun nylon-6 mat may open a new direction for future graphene/polymer electronics. © 2013 The Korean Fiber Society and Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht
