It is believed that attitudes to languages and culture tend to affect achievement in foreign language learning (Baker, 1997). Thus, this factor may be seen as crucial when it comes to the discrepancies in attainment in different languages learnt by the same students. Therefore, it seems vital to investigate variation in attitudes towards both learning L2 together with the approach to the L2 culture and the corresponding issues with respect to L3. Nevertheless, the general attitude towards learning languages needs to be taken into account as well. This article discusses the attitudes towards learning two pairs of languages, specifically: English as L2 and German as L3 and German as L2 and English as L3. A group of lower high school learners from Poland took part in the study and the data was gathered by means of questionnaires, which included both closed and open-ended questions. The study is based on and inspired by a similar survey by Simsek et al. (2007). The main objective of the present paper is to shed light on the well-known problem that students who are reasonably successful in learning L2 have a problem with studying L3 (Hufeisen & Neuner, 2004).Istnieje przekonanie, że postawa wobec języka i kultury ma wpływ na osiągnięcia w nauce języka obcego (Baker, 1997).

Dictionary skills in advanced learners’ coursebooks — Materials survey

Nowadays, almost 65 years after the publication of the first advanced learner’s dictionary, this particular consultation source is considered “a useful addition to any [language] course” (Sharma & Barret, 2007: 52). However, as it was remarked by Leany (2007: 1), the ability to successfully utilize advanced learner’s dictionaries requires a considerable amount of practice on the part of students. Thus, dictionary skills appear to constitute one of the key aspects of EFL education. Therefore, the aim of this article is to identify key dictionary skills and describe how they are promoted in advanced learner’s coursebooks. Following the set of guidelines described in Leany (2007) and Welker (2010), the authors developed criteria that were used to assess the dictionary-oriented contents of selected teaching materials. It is hoped that this article highlights the advantages and exposes the shortcomings of dictionary-oriented materials and activities included in EFL coursebooks

The use of language learning strategies in a second and third language: The case of foreign language majors

Although multilingualism has become a fact of life in the last few decades, this phenomenon has largely failed to find a reflection in research on language learning strategies. Even when scholars have addressed this issue, it has mostly been done with the purpose of proving the advantage of multilingualism over bilingualism, and scant attention has been given to how the nature, utility or status of a particular additional language can impact the frequency and patterns of strategy use. The present paper seeks to partially fill this gap by investigating the employment of strategies by 107 Polish university students majoring in English and, at the same time, being required to reach a high level of proficiency in another additional language. The data were collected by means of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990) and interviews conducted with selected participants. A combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis demonstrated that strategy use in the second language was higher than in the third language, both overall and with respect to specific groups of strategies, mostly traditional and memory strategies were deployed, and the outcomes could be attributed to the proficiency level in both languages and varied motivation to master these languages

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in children with malignancies – a single-center retrospective study

BackgroundPosterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) diagnosis relies on clinical and radiological characteristics. Clinical manifestations include focal neurologic deficits, hemiparesis, seizures with symptoms of intracranial hypertension, headache, nausea, vomiting, and visual field disturbances. The majority of patients have typical changes in magnetic resonance imaging. The epidemiology and outcomes of PRES in the pediatric cancer population have not been well described. Most of the available data are from retrospective analyses.ObjectiveThe aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological presentation as well as the outcome of PRES in children treated for cancers in a single center.MethodsWe analyzed data from 1,053 patients diagnosed with malignancies in a single center over 15 years to determine the incidence of PRES.Results19/1053 (1.8%) patients developed PRES. The diagnosis was accompanied by a range of clinical symptoms including hypertension, seizures, altered mental status, and headaches. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in all patients, and 14/19 (73.7%) exhibited typical findings consistent with PRES. Four patients (21.0%) required treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.ConclusionPosterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare but significant complication in children with cancer. There is a clear need to establish clinical criteria for PRES to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with PRES, particularly in the pediatric oncological population.Further studies are needed to identify the risk factors for recurrent PRES, particularly in pediatric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or immunosuppressive treatment

Researching language learning strategies in the second and third language

    No full text
Although language learning strategies are a well-researched topic, there are still some aspects which need further investigation and one of these is the application of strategic devices in the second and third language. The following article seeks to compare how learners of two foreign languages use strategies and shows both differences and similarities between the application of strategic devices by presenting the results of a research project in which a questionnaire and an interview were used as the research tools. Strategies were found to be used more often when learning the L2 than during the process of learning the L3. Dissimilarities were observed in the specific types of strategies used, especially in the case of metacognitive strategies, while similarities were noted in the use of affective strategies
