    An approach to design of a large-scale distributed system intended for factory automation is described for a case study of Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Management systems (CIMMs). Some aspects of the two basic approaches to design of CIMMs (by-organisation and by-thinking) are compared. The paper presents some experience in design and development large-scale systems and the current state of art for the domain. A feasible approach (by-thinking) is proposed for that distributed system, based on prospective user expectations and the system development with use of so called first thread on which the standards facilitating development of subsequent systems should be developed and people acquainted with both manufacturing and management problems should be educated. There is also depicted some modelling and analysis work intended for facilitating design and implementation of future CIMMs, being a good example of complex computer systems

    The design and implementation team of computer automation systems for the Polish power industry faced many difficult problems connected with the lack of experience in this domain in the country. Another kind of problems was implied by different levels of information and communication technology in that country and in well developed ones. The differences were generated by both internal (importation limitations) and external (various embargos) reasons. But perhaps the most severe problems were the political ones, implied by the omnipotent communist system, that could spoil and often spoiled even many-year work of design and implementation teams. The paper tries to answer how, in such adverse conditions, it was possible to design and develop very successful power industry computer automation systems

    The paper presents the most important properties of the QNX system used in servicing the Distributed Control System (DCS) MASTER. Operating systems with a monolithic structure and microkernel systems are distinguished. The QNX system is a microkernel system. The QNX microkernel supports its system processes, as well as the DCS MASTER processes, with the ability to manage their execution on its own. In addition, various file systems are presented, including the power failure-proof QNX6 file system and reliable communication systems, both corporate and universal, based on QNET, TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols. These systems enable access to distributed disk resources of the MASTER system stations and controllers. They provide tools to support large-size graphic displays and to implement local and remote diagnostic and servicing operations.W artykule przedstawiono najwa偶niejsze w艂a艣ciwo艣ci systemu QNX, wykorzystywane w obs艂udze systemu automatyki DCS MASTER.     The paper presents the exemplary industrial system models from the event-driven simulator up to Approximate network analytical performance evaluation system tool (Anapest). The basic approximations assumed in Anapest are roughly discussed together with the basic network configuration for which the tool was developed. The two basic ways of Anapest validation, i.e. the internal network measuring tool Sitwa and event-driven simulation are depicted.
