    Enhanced soliton interactions by inhomogeneous nonlocality and nonlinearity

    We address the interactions between optical solitons in the system with longitudinally varying nonlocality degree and nonlinearity strength. We consider a physical model describing light propagation in nematic liquid crystals featuring a strongly nonlocal nonlinear response. We reveal that the variation of the nonlocality and nonlinearity along the propagation direction can substantially enhance or weaken the interaction between out-of-phase solitons. This phenomenon manifests itself as a slowdown or acceleration of the soliton collision dynamics in one-dimensional geometries or of the soliton spiraling rate in bulk media. Therefore, one finds that by engineering the nonlocality and nonlinearity variation rate one can control the output soliton location.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Physical Review

    Assessment of the variability of airborne contamination levels in an intensive care unit over a 24 hour period

    Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate the variability in the dynamics and levels of airborne contamination within a hospital ICU in order to establish an improved understanding of the extent to which airborne bioburden contributes to cross-infection of patients. Microorganisms from the respiratory tract or skin can become airborne by coughing, sneezing and periods of increased activity such as bed changes and staff rounds. Current knowledge of the clinical microflora is limited however it is estimated that 10-33% of nosocomial infections are transmitted via air. Methods: Environmental air monitoring was conducted in Glasgow Royal Infirmary ICU, in the open ward and in patient isolation rooms. A sieve impactor air sampler was used to collect 500 L air samples every 15 minutes over 10 hour (08:00-18:00 h) and 24 hour (08:00-08:00 h) periods. Samples were collected, room activity logged and the bacterial contamination levels were recorded as CFU/m3 of air. Results: A high degree of variability in levels of airborne contamination was observed over the course of a 10 hour day and a 24 period in a hospital ICU. Counts ranged from 12-510 CFU/m3 over 24 hours in an isolation room occupied for 10 days by a patient with C. difficile infection. Contamination levels were found to be lowest during the night and in unoccupied rooms, with an average value of 20 CFU/m3. Peaks in airborne contamination showed a direct relation to an increase in room activity. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the degree of airborne contamination that can occur in an ICU over a 24 hour period. Numerous factors were found to contribute to microbial air contamination and consideration should be given to potential improved infection control strategies and decontamination technologies which could be deployed within the clinical environment to reduce the airborne contamination levels, with the ultimate aim of reducing healthcare-associated infections from environmental sources

    The PULSE@Parkes project: A new observing technique for long-term pulsar monitoring

    The PULSE@Parkes project has been designed to monitor the rotation of radio pulsars over time spans of days to years. The observations are obtained using the Parkes 64-m and 12-m radio telescopes by Australian and international high school students. These students learn the basis of radio astronomy and undertake small projects with their observations. The data are fully calibrated and obtained with the state-of-the-art pulsar hardware available at Parkes. The final data sets are archived and are currently being used to carry out studies of 1) pulsar glitches, 2) timing noise, 3) pulse profile stability over long time scales and 4) the extreme nulling phenomenon. The data are also included in other projects such as gamma-ray observatory support and for the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project. In this paper we describe the current status of the project and present the first scientific results from the Parkes 12-m radio telescope. We emphasise that this project offers a straightforward means to enthuse high school students and the general public about radio astronomy while obtaining scientifically valuable data sets.Comment: accepted for publication by PAS

    Haptically enabled interactivity and immersive virtual assembly

    Virtual training systems are attracting paramount attention from the manufacturing industries due to their potential advantages over the conventional training practices such as general assembly. Within this virtual training realm for general assembly, a haptically enabled interactive and immersive virtual reality (HIVEx) system is presented. The idea is to imitate real assembly training scenarios by providing comprehensive user interaction as well as by enforcing physical constraints within the virtual environment through the use of haptics technology. The developed system employs a modular system approach providing flexibility of reconfiguration and scalability as well as better utilization of the current multi-core computer architecture. The user interacts with the system using haptics device and data glove while fully immersed into the virtual environment with depth perception. An evaluation module, incorporated into the system, automatically logs and evaluates the information through the simulation providing user performance and improvements over time. A ruggedized portable version of the system is also developed and presented with full system capabilities allowing easy relocation with different factory environments. A number of training scenarios has been developed with varying degree of complexity to exploit the potential of the presented system. The presented system can be employed for teaching and training of existing assembly processes as well as the design of new optimised assembly operations. Furthermore, the presented system can assist in optimizing existing practices by evaluating the effectiveness and the level of knowledge transfer involved in the process. Within the aforementioned conceptual. framework, a working prototype is developed.<br /

    Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of atazanavir in pregnancy

    Purpose of the study: Pregnant women experience physiological changes during pregnancy resulting in clinically significant alterations in antiretroviral pharmacokinetics (PK). Therefore, achieving and maintaining optimal plasma concentrations of antiretroviral drugs is essential for maternal health and minimising the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The aim of this study is to describe atazanavir/ritonavir (ATV/r) PK during pregnancy. Methods: Pregnant HIV-positive women received ATV/r as part of their routine pre-natal care. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and ATV plasma concentrations [ATV] were determined in the first (T1), second (T2) and third (T3) trimester using HPLC-MS/MS (LLQ=0.05 &#x00B5;g/mL). Postpartum (PP) sampling was performed where applicable. Antepartum (AP) and PP PK parameters were compared using a one-way ANOVA. Summary of results: From January 2007, 44 women (37 black African) were enrolled in the study. All received ATV/r at a standard dose of 1 tablet once daily (300/100 mg od). 24 women were receiving ART prior to pregnancy, and 20 women initiated ATV/r during pregnancy. Median (range) gestation at treatment initiation in these patients was 23.5 weeks (7&#x2013;35). At the time nearest to delivery 31 patients had an undetectable plasma viral load (pVL), 6 patients had detectable pVL and 2 were unavailable. [ATV] were determined in 11/44 (T1); 25/44 (T2); 35/44 (T3) and 28/44 (PP) patients. Time of TDM sampling, gestation time and [ATV] (geometric mean; 95% CI) are given in the Table. 6 patients were either below or approaching the ATV MEC (0.15 &#x00B5;g/mL) during pregnancy; of these, 4/6 achieved undetectable pVL at the time of delivery (1=pVL of 291 copies/mL; 1 unavailable). [ATV] were significantly lower at T2/T3 relative to T1/PP. Equally, in a paired analysis of 28 patients (T2/T3 vs. PP), [ATV] were significantly reduced at T2/T3 (P=0.003). Conclusions: This study represents one of the larger cohorts of women undergoing TDM for ATV in pregnancy. Lower [ATV] were seen in T2 and T3 when compared to T1. However, such findings were not associated with viral breakthrough or HIV transmissions. Nonetheless, careful monitoring of women in pregnancy is required, and if there is concern for inadequate levels, dose adjustment of ATV upward from 300 mg to 400 mg may be an option

    Haptically enable interactive virtual assembly training system development and evaluation

    Virtual training systems are attracting paramount attention from the manufacturing industries due to their potential advantages over the conventional training practices. Significant cost savings can be realized due to the shorter times for the development of different training-scenarios as well as reuse of existing designed engineering (math) models. In addition, use of computer based virtual reality (VR) training systems can shorten the time span from computer aided product design to commercial production due to non-reliance on the hardware parts for training. Within the aforementioned conceptual framework, a haptically enabled interactive and immersive virtual reality (HIVEx) system is presented. Unlike existing VR systems, the presented idea tries to imitate real physical training scenarios by providing comprehensive user interaction, constrained within the physical limitations of the real world. These physical constrains are imposed by the haptics devices in the virtual environment. As a result, in contrast to the existing VR systems that are capable of providing knowledge generally about assembly sequences only, the proposed system helps in cognitive learning and procedural skill development as well, due to its high physically interactive nature.<br /
