High-capacity transmission over polymer optical fiber
Abstract-Polymer optical fiber (POF) is a promising transmission medium to provide broad-band telecommunication services within the customer's premises. POF offers several attractive features for data transmission such as broad bandwidth and low cost for in-house, access, and local-area-network (LAN) applications. This paper presents a review on optical transmission systems using POF and their enabling technologies. A summary is given of experimental data links with record capacity over record transmission distances. To conclude, we discuss trends for further development and research.
Advances in single-mode interconnection technology
It is argued that a splicing method that requires no far ends and second measurement is potentially cost-effective. The key elements for the preparation of such splices and connectors are summarized, and some methods are described in this context. Some of the techniques can be used for connection to laser diodes and planar optical components also
Laser-to-Monomode-Fiber Coupling and Encapsulation in a Modified TO-5 Package
This paper presents the results of laser-to-monomode-fiber coupling and packaging for trunk system applications. The optical and mechanical design considerations are explained and the experimental results are discussed. A tapered fiber end with high-index lens on top and a single alignment step based on the deformation of indium are combined for the first time in one package assembly. Special couplingconfigurations for coherent system applications are also described
Cutting optical fibres with a hot wire
\u3cp\u3eA hot metal wire creates a knee in the fibre and a score in the hollow of the knee. The knee is used to introduce a nonuniform stress distribution across the fibre with a maximum at the score. Reproducible mirror-finished fibre ends were made by using a compact tool.\u3c/p\u3
TTOSS: An integrated subscriber system for direct and coherent detection
The results are presented of an in-house demonstration of the Totally Transparent Optical Subscriber System (TTOSS) which shows that the system can be operated with present-day direct detection systems. In addition, it is shown that TTOSS can be gradually adapted for use in coherent systems without modification to the permanently installed part of the system
New Endless Polarization Control Method using Three Fiber Squeezers
In a polarization control system using two fiber squeezers of limited range, the reset causes momentary signal loss. To prevent this loss an extra squeezer is required. Also a special controlling algorithm must be developed. Noe has proposed such an algorithm [6]-[8]. In this paper, a new theoretical approach to the problem is presented resulting in a new algorithm. The presence of angular misalignment between the fiber squeezers is also discussed
