Application of medical gases in the field of neurobiology
Medical gases are pharmaceutical molecules which offer solutions to a wide array of medical needs. This can range from use in burn and stroke victims to hypoxia therapy in children. More specifically however, gases such as oxygen, helium, xenon, and hydrogen have recently come under increased exploration for their potential theraputic use with various brain disease states including hypoxia-ischemia, cerebral hemorrhages, and traumatic brain injuries. As a result, this article will review the various advances in medical gas research and discuss the potential therapeutic applications and mechanisms with regards to the field of neurobiology
Accelerated mechanical fatigue testing and lifetime of interconnects in microelectronics
AbstractDue to the rapid development of packaging industry accelerated reliability testing for evaluation of lifetime of electronic components are increasingly utilized. In addition to common active thermal cycling procedures, accelerated mechanical fatigue testing provides a new possibility to assess the reliability of microelectronic components, mainly due to the significantly shorter duration of testing time. In this investigation we have used an ultrasonic fatigue testing system in combination with a special experimental set-up for qualification and lifetime determination of microelectronic interconnects. Using this technique, fatigue life of Al wire bonded interconnects were determined and S-N curves (shear stress as a function of loading cycles) up to N=109 were plotted. Three dimensional elasto-plastic FEM simulations were performed to determine the distributions of shear stress and plastic strain generated during cyclic fatigue in the bond area. Furthermore, the FEM model was employed to predict the lifetime of wire-bonds. The results were correlated to the lifetime curves of similar bonds obtained by power cycling tests. Detailed microstructural investigations were performed by means of EBSD -SEM to study the evolution of microstructure of the interconnects subjected to thermal and mechanical fatigue loading. This study demonstrates the applicability of accelerated mechanical fatigue testing as an alternative to time consuming thermal cycling for qualification of microelectronic interconnects
The use of steroids for the management of chronic shoulder pain by interventional techniques
Background: Pain as a common symptom of shoulder disease, has diverse etiologies. NSAIDs, physiotherapy, neural blocks, intraarticular injections, and surgery are the most commonly used methods of treatment. The goals of this study were to reduce pain and improve the range of motion of the affected shoulder. Methods: Among 70 patients referred to a private pain clinic with chronic shoulder pain as their major complaint (duration of pain 21 mo), 63 patients were chosen for regional blocks as follows: suprascapular (25), sub-acromial bursa and suprascapular (40), sub-acromial bursa and field block (FB) (14), brachial plexus (11), cervical epidural (6), and FB (4). Pain relief evaluation was done according to Visual Analog Scale (VAS) (using a 100-segmented ruler). Pain relief > 50 was considered successful and special health-care and medical exercise therapy recommended. Results: Average age of patients was 49.2 ± 13.7 years (females = 64 and males = 34). Sixty-seven percent of patients had significant pain relief after a week, 73 after 4 weeks, and 81 after 12 weeks (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Regarding the results of pain relief after 1, 4, and 12 weeks postinjection, it appears that the pain relief state is likely to be permanent after the first week
Estimating the completeness of lung cancer registry in Ardabil, Iran with a three-source capture-recapture method
Cancer registration is an important component of a comprehensive cancer control program, providing timely data and information for research and administrative use. Capture-recapture methods have been used as tools to investigate completeness of cancer registry data. This study aimed to estimate the completeness of lung cancer cases registered in Ardabil Population Based Cancer Registry (APBCR) with a three-source capture-recapture method. Data for all new cases of lung cancer reported by three sources (pathology reports, death certificates, and medical records) to APBCR for 2006 and 2008 were obtained. Duplicate cases shared among the three sources were identified based on similarity of first name, last name and father's names. A log-linear model was used to estimate number of missed cases and to control for dependency among sources. A total of 218 new cases of lung cancer was reported by three sources after removing duplicates. The estimated completeness calculated by log-linear method was 26.4 for 2006 and 27.1 for 2008. The completeness differed according to gender. In men, the completeness was 26.0 for 2006 and 28.1 for 2008. In women, the completeness was 36.5 for 2006 and 46.9 for 2008. In conclusion, none of the three sources can be considered as a reliable source for accurate cancer incidence estimation. © 2016, Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention

Acute and Long-Term Effects of Hyperthermia in B16-F10 Melanoma Cells
OBJECTIVE: Hyperthermia uses exogenous heat induction as a cancer therapy. This work addresses the acute and long-term effects of hyperthermia in the highly metastatic melanoma cell line B16-F10. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Melanoma cells were submitted to one heat treatment, 45°C for 30 min, and thereafter were kept at 37°C for an additional period of 14 days. Cultures maintained at 37°C were used as control. Cultures were assessed for the heat shock reaction. RESULTS: Immediately after the heat shock, cells began a process of fast degradation, and, in the first 24 h, cultures showed decreased viability, alterations in cell morphology and F-actin cytoskeleton organization, significant reduction in the number of adherent cells, most of them in a process of late apoptosis, and an altered gene expression profile. A follow-up of two weeks after heat exposure showed that viability and number of adherent cells remained very low, with a high percentage of early apoptotic cells. Still, heat-treated cultures maintained a low but relatively constant population of cells in S and G(2)/M phases for a long period after heat exposure, evidencing the presence of metabolically active cells. CONCLUSION: The melanoma cell line B16-F10 is susceptible to one hyperthermia treatment at 45°C, with significant induced acute and long-term effects. However, a low but apparently stable percentage of metabolically active cells survived long after heat exposure
