Detection of Herpes Simplex Virus-1 Antigen in Tissues of Breast Cancer
Background: Breast cancer is a common malignancy and a major cause of death in women. Many factors responsible for breast cancer such as viruses. Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), infection which has been implicated in pathogenesis of certain disease and some studies has been described the involvement of viruses in cancers.
Aim: To determine the presence of HSV-1antigen in women presented with breast cancer.
Methods: Twenty two formalin-fixed paraffin embedded breast tissue collected from the Al-Kadhimiya teaching hospital in Baghdad. Clinical data were analyzed from the medical records; in addition ten normal breast tissues used as control group. All samples were sectioned and examined by direct immunofluorescence for detection of HSV-1 antigen.
Results: Detection of HSV-1 Ag in tissues patients with breast cancer was 31.8% (7 out of 22), where statistical significant was found between expression of HSV-1 and patients with breast cancer based on statistical analysis. While no significant correlation between HSV-1 and age, grade, type of tumor and lymph node metastasis.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the current study, Herpes simplex virus-1 could be a co-factor in the oncogenesis of breast cancer or could infect cancer tissues opportunistically
Effect of Immunization against Aflatoxin B1 on the Expression of COX-2 in Liver, Kidney and spleen of Rabbits treated with aflatoxin B1
Aflatoxin B1 is a mycotoxin produced mainly by the fungus Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus in food and feed. It is considered as a carcinogenic toxin for human and animals. The current study was designed to investigate the expression of COX-2 in liver, kidney and spleen of immunized and non-immunized rabbits against aflatoxin B1 which treated with aflatoxin B1. Immunohistochemical results indicated that COX-2 highly expressed in the liver, kidney and spleen (4.00±0.00*, 3.66±0.33*, 2.00±0.00* respectively) (P≤ 0.05) of aflatoxin B1-treated rabbits (0.7 mg/kg) and their expression was significantly reduced by immunization of rabbits against aflatoxin B1 using prepared immunogen consisted of (aflatoxin B1- bovine serum Albumin Conjugate using concentration 100 µg and 200 µg), and the expression was reduced using concentration 100 µg more than 200 µg. Keywords: Aflatoxin B1, Antibody, Immunization, COX-2
The possible role of high risk HPV infection in Iraqi patients with colorectal cancer
Aims: the aim of this study is RPD3 expression in clinicopathological characteristics in CRC patients and to study the existence of a relationship between CRC and HPV in samples of Iraqi patients. Material and methods: 30 samples of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded archival tissues from CRC patients were obtained, together with 10 samples of normal tissue (free cancer), for immunohistochemical analysis of RPD3 and HPV expression. Results: Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining revealed only four cases (15%) with HPV infections while PRD3 was expressed in 19 CRC samples (63.3 percent). The PRD3 expression ratio. It was found in only four (15%) of the CRC samples. At ≤ P 0. 05, there is no significant difference. Conclusion: The results of this study support RPD3 as a supplementary marker to identified histologic screening components; it could possibly be used for the prognosis and targeted therapy. In addition, we discovered a relation with both HPV infection and CRC as oncovirus and tumorigenic factor
