Transport in bacteriophage P22-infected Salmonella typhimurium
There was rapid efflux of L-leucine, L-phenylalanine, and α-methyl-D-glucoside after infection of Salmonella typhimurium with the clear plaque mutant C1 of phage P22. The efflux was similar to that observed with cyanide or arsenate treatment except that there was partial recovery in the case of phage infection and almost complete recovery under the condition of lysogeny. There was no efflux after infection with the temperature-sensitive mutant ts16C1 at nonpermissive temperature. Superinfection of superinfection exclusion negative lysogen (sie A - sie B-) with C1 led to efflux, whereas the efflux was much less on superinfection of sie A+ Sie B+ lysogen. These results indicate that an effective injection process is enough to cause depression in the cellular transport processes
Decrease in hyperosmotic stress-induced corneal epithelial cell apoptosis by L-carnitine
Purpose: To characterize the osmoprotective properties of L-carnitine on human corneal epithelial cell volume and apoptosis during hyperosmotic stress.
Methods: Human corneal limbal epithelial (HCLE) cells were exposed to culture medium at 300 mOsm (isotonic) or 500 mOsm (hyperosmotic) with or without L-carnitine (10 mM). Induction of apoptosis was detected by quantifying the proteolytic activity of caspase-8, caspase-9, and caspase-3/7 using caspase activity assays, the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and annexin V/propidium iodide staining of HCLE cells evaluated with confocal microscopy and flow cytometry. Cell volume changes in response to hyperosmotic stress were analyzed using flow cytometry.
Results: After the HCLE cells were exposed to hyperosmotic medium (500 mOsm), the percentage of shrunken cells and damaged/dead cells (stained positively for annexin V and/or propidium iodide) was six- and three-fold, respectively, higher than that under isotonic conditions (300 mOsm). This was paralleled by an increase in TNF-α concentration in media and caspase-8, -9, and -3/7 activities (six-, four-, ten-, and twelve-fold, respectively; all showing p\u3c0.001). Addition of L-carnitine during hyperosmotic stress partly restored cell volume and significantly reduced the concentration of TNF-α released (p=0.005) and caspase-9 activity (p=0.0125). Addition of L-carnitine reduced the percentage of hyperosmolarity-induced damaged/dead cells to levels observed under isotonic conditions
On the Hamiltonian structure of Ermakov systems
A canonical Hamiltonian formalism is derived for a class of Ermakov systems
specified by several different frequency functions. This class of systems
comprises all known cases of Hamiltonian Ermakov systems and can always be
reduced to quadratures. The Hamiltonian structure is explored to find exact
solutions for the Calogero system and for a noncentral potential with dynamic
symmetry. Some generalizations of these systems possessing exact solutions are
also identified and solved
Bound State Wave Functions through the Quantum Hamilton - Jacobi Formalism
The bound state wave functions for a wide class of exactly solvable
potentials are found utilizing the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. It is
shown that, exploiting the singularity structure of the quantum momentum
function, until now used only for obtaining the bound state energies, one can
straightforwardly find both the eigenvalues and the corresponding
eigenfunctions. After demonstrating the working of this approach through a
number of solvable examples, we consider Hamiltonians, which exhibit broken and
unbroken phases of supersymmetry. The natural emergence of the eigenspectra and
the wave functions, in both the unbroken and the algebraically non-trivial
broken phase, demonstrates the utility of this formalism.Comment: replaced with the journal versio
p-Adic and Adelic Harmonic Oscillator with Time-Dependent Frequency
The classical and quantum formalism for a p-adic and adelic harmonic
oscillator with time-dependent frequency is developed, and general formulae for
main theoretical quantities are obtained. In particular, the p-adic propagator
is calculated, and the existence of a simple vacuum state as well as adelic
quantum dynamics is shown. Space discreteness and p-adic quantum-mechanical

Brownian Motion and Polymer Statistics on Certain Curved Manifolds
We have calculated the probability distribution function G(R,L|R',0) of the
end-to-end vector R-R' and the mean-square end-to-end distance (R-R')^2 of a
Gaussian polymer chain embedded on a sphere S^(D-1) in D dimensions and on a
cylinder, a cone and a curved torus in 3-D.
We showed that: surface curvature induces a geometrical localization area; at
short length the polymer is locally "flat" and (R-R')^2 = L l in all cases; at
large scales, (R-R')^2 is constant for the sphere, it is linear in L for the
cylinder and reaches different constant values for the torus. The cone vertex
induces (function of opening angle and R') contraction of the chain for all

Heisenberg-picture approach to the exact quantum motion of a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator
In the Heisenberg picture, the generalized invariant and exact quantum
motions are found for a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator. We find the
eigenstate and the coherent state of the invariant and show that the
dispersions of these quantum states do not depend on the external force. Our

Natural boundaries for the Smoluchowski equation and affiliated diffusion processes
The Schr\"{o}dinger problem of deducing the microscopic dynamics from the
input-output statistics data is known to admit a solution in terms of Markov
diffusions. The uniqueness of solution is found linked to the natural
boundaries respected by the underlying random motion. By choosing a reference
Smoluchowski diffusion process, we automatically fix the Feynman-Kac potential
and the field of local accelerations it induces. We generate the family of
affiliated diffusions with the same local dynamics, but different inaccessible
boundaries on finite, semi-infinite and infinite domains. For each diffusion
process a unique Feynman-Kac kernel is obtained by the constrained (Dirichlet
boundary data) Wiener path integration.As a by-product of the discussion, we
give an overview of the problem of inaccessible boundaries for the diffusion
and bring together (sometimes viewed from unexpected angles) results which are
little known, and dispersed in publications from scarcely communicating areas

Free energy of the Fr\"ohlich polaron in two and three dimensions
We present a novel Path Integral Monte Carlo scheme to solve the Fr\"ohlich
polaron model. At intermediate and strong electron-phonon coupling, the polaron
self-trapping is properly taken into account at the level of an effective
action obtained by a preaveraging procedure with a retarded trial action. We
compute the free energy at several couplings and temperatures in three and two
dimensions. Our results show that the accuracy of the Feynman variational upper
bound for the free energy is always better than 5% although the thermodynamics
derived from it is not correct. Our estimates of the ground state energies
demonstrate that the second cumulant correction to the variational upper bound
predicts the self energy to better than 1% at intermediate and strong coupling.Comment: RevTeX 7 pages 3 figures, revised versio
Green's function for the Relativistic Coulomb System via Sum Over Perturbation Series
We evaluate the Green's function of the D-dimensional relativistic Coulomb
system via sum over perturbation series which is obtained by expanding the
exponential containing the potential term in the path integral
into a power series. The energy spectra and wave functions are extracted from
