    ANTIHEPATOTOXIC ACTIVITY OF TWO NEW QUERCETIN DERIVATIVES IN CARBON TETRACHLORIDE INDUCED HEPATOXICITY IN RATS

    Quercetin, a bioflavonol is widely found in nature and possesses diverse pharmacological properties. A heterocyclic 1,4 dioxane nucleus was incorporated in Quercetin structure to obtain two structural analogues of silybin. The aim of the study was to antihepatotoxic potential of Quercetin derivatives containing 1,4 dioxane heterocyclic ring in Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatotoxicity in female Wistar Albino rats. Two Quercetin derivatives (QD) were synthesized by reported method. QD were administered orally at dose of 10 mg/kg, once daily for 7 days to Wistar Albino rats. A single dose of CCl4(1mL/kg) was used for inducing liver damage. Antihepatotoxic activity was evaluated by measuring levels of total proteins (TP), total albumin (TA), alkaline phosphatase (ALKP) and liver enzymes such as serum glutamate oxaloacetate (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT).QD exhibited potent antihepatotoxic activity with respect to standard drug silybon-70. However, it was observed that the Quercetin derivative having –CH2OH group in the dioxane ring exhibited better activity in comparision to unsubstituted 1,4 dixoane ring derivative.The exact mechanism by which QD protects the liver is unknown however the observed effects could be attributed to presence of 1,4 dioxane ring and due to the significant antioxidant activity of Quercetin flavone.     Preparation and Evaluation of Olive Apple Blended Leather

    The aim of the study was to evaluate a suitable combination of olive and apple pulp for the preparation of olive apple blended leather, stored at ambient temperature. The treatments were T0, T1, T2 and T3. The samples were wrapped in aluminum foil and then packed in polyethylene plastic bags and evaluation was carried out for a total period of 150 days. Physiochemically analysis; acidity and moisture and sensory characteristics; color, texture, taste and overall acceptability (using Larmond Scale) were evaluated at 30 days interval. A significant decrease was recorded in moisture (from 13.60% to 11.53%), color (from7.20 to 4.60), taste (from 7.53 to 5.40), texture (from 7.23 to 5.13) and overall acceptability (from 7.33 to 4.85). A significant increase was recorded in acidity (from 0.67% to 0.84%). Among all the treatments T3 was found most acceptable both physiochemically and organoleptically

    Determination of total phenol, in-vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of seeds and fruits of Zizyphus spina-christi grown in Oman

    ABSTRACTObjectiveTo perform phytochemical screening and to evaluate the in-vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of ethanolic extract of seeds and fruits of Zizyphus spina-christi (ZSC) growing in Oman.MethodsAlcoholic extract of the dry powdered seeds and fruits of ZSC was obtained by cold maceration method and was subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening. Total phenolic content were estimated by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was used to determine in-vitro antioxidant activity of plant extracts. Anti-inflammatory activity was investigated by protein denaturation method.ResultsPhytochemical analysis of both the extracts revealed the presence of major classes of phytochemicals such as tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides etc.. ZSC seeds were found to contain the highest total phenolics but ZSC fruits exhibited the maximum antioxidant activity. The anti-inflammatory activity of both parts of the plant extract was significant and comparable with the standard anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac.ConclusionsBased on the results of this pilot study, it can be concluded that ZSC is a good source of natural antioxidants which can be used to prevent progression of many chronic diseases. Further detailed phytochemical studies are needed to identify the chemical compounds responsible for exhibiting potent anti-inflammatory activity

    Synthesis and biological evaluation of some novel benzoxazin-4-one and quinazolin-4-one derivatives based on anti-inflammatory commercial drugs

    Benzoxazine and quinazoline are nitrogen-containing heterocyclic scaffolds found in various biologically active compounds. Due to their diverse biological actions, these heterocyclic rings serve as crucial frameworks for designing medicinal compounds. This study aimed to synthesize and assess in vivo anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and low ulcerogenic potential of a few novel benz[d][1,3]-oxazin-4-one and quinazolinone derivatives. Benzoxazinones (3a-e) were synthesized by cyclizing the carboxylic group (-COOH) of five nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs viz., aceclofenac, ibuprofen, diclofenac, mefenamic acid and ketoprofen (2a-e) with anthranilic acid (1) using dry phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) in pyridine. The corresponding quinazolinone derivatives (5a-e) were obtained by reacting 3a-e with isonicotinic acid hydrazide (4). Both sets of compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic effects, and ulcerogenicity in animal models. Structural characterization was performed using spectral analysis. Among the benzoxazinone derivatives, compound 2-(2-((2,6-dichlorophenyl) amino) benzyl)-4H-benzo[d][1,3]oxazin-4-one (3d) exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity (62.61% inhibition of rat paw edema) and analgesic activity (62.36% protection in acetic acid-induced writhings) with tolerable gastrointestinal toxicity (2.67 ulcerogenicity index) compared to quinazolinone derivatives. The results of anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of both the series are comparable with the respective, positive control. Compound 3d, a benzoxazinone-diclofenac hybrid, emerged as a lead molecule with potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic activities and moderate gastric toxicity showcasing the promising potential for further development

    Incidence of Port Site Infection After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Our Experience at Hayatabad Medical Complex

    OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the factors that affect post-laparoscopic cholecystectomies PSI and determine which characteristics can be changed to prevent PSI in a trial to maximize the benefits of laparoscopic surgery.METHODOLOGY The study included all patients who experienced port site infection following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. All patients received Inj Ceftriaxone 1gm pre-operatively & then twice a day postoperatively for 03 days. In all operations, the gallbladder is removed from the epigastric port without using a retrieval bag by skilled surgeons employing four-port methods and reusable equipment. Most patients had the sub-hepatic tube drain placed and were discharged the day after surgery.RESULTSAcute cholecystitis was the most common operative finding with port-site infection, i.e. 6(42.8%), second being empyema that was seen in 3(21.4%) patients, 2(14.3%) patients had bad adhesions, mucocele in 2(14.3%) patients and thick walled gall bladder with stones was found in 1(7.1%) patients respectively, indicating that the relationship between infection and acute cholecystitis is significant. Regarding the spills of bile, stones, or pus, 3(21.4%) patients had infections despite there being no spillage, while 11(78.6%) patients developed an infection while the spillage happened during their procedures. The p-value was 0.0001, meaning that the spillage might be considered a risk factor for the development of port site infection.CONCLUSIONThe spilling of bile, stones, or pus, the port of gallbladder removal, and acute cholecystitis are all strongly associated with port site infection. Given that Mycobacterium tuberculosis may be the source of chronic deep surgical site infections, more care should be exercised. The majority of PSIs are superficial and more prevalent in men

    Growth performances of three microalgal species in filtered brackishwater with different inorganic media

    The growth of three microalgae species, viz., Nannochloropsis oculata, Tetraselmis chui and Chaetoceros muelleri which are commonly used in aquaculture, was investigated using three different inorganic nutrient media: (i) Modified Guillard's f/2 medium (ii) Rix Mix medium and (iii) BFRI medium. Each microalgae species was cultured for 24 days in small- scale with initial inoculation density of 17xl04 cell /ml in the three media with triplicates. N. oculata cultured in modified Guillard's f/2 medium showed superior growth with a mean peak density of 221 ±4.24 x 104 cell/ ml, to Rix Mix medium (141 ± 10.54xl04 cell/ml) and BFRI medium (47±4.94 x 104 cell/ml) on the 16th day of culture at stationary phase. Considering the increase in cell density for 20 days of culture in Rix Mix medium, C. muelleriwas significantly (P<0.05) highest than in other two media. N. oculata cultured in BFRI medium resulted in the poorest growth with a mean peak increase in density of 84±9.19 x 104 cell/ml in 12 days of culture. However, with an increase in cell density, growth of T. chui (182 ± 6.26 x 104 cell/ml) was significantly (P<0.05) higher in BFRI medium than in modified Guillard's f/2 medium. The results of the present study suggest that N. oculata and C. muelleri can be grown very well in both the modified Guillard's f/2 medium and Rix Mix medium. Better growth of T. chui can be obtained while culturing either in BFRI and Rix Mix medium. These three nutrient media used in the present study may be useful for microalgae species culture for establishing green-water culture for suitable target zooplankton, and fish and crustacean larvae in marine and brackishwater hatcheries

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The association of fibular duplication with metatarsal diplopodia is extremely rare with only a few cases reported in the medical literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present a 4-month-old girl with left tibial agenesis with fibular duplication (mirror foot) and metatarsal diplopodia.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The case report highlights the need for an understanding of this rare congenital anomaly which may be seen only once in the working lifetime of an orthopaedic surgeon.</p

    Differential Image Compression for Telemedicine: A Novel Approach

    Telemedicine is one of the most emerging technologies of applied medical sciences. Medical information related to patients is transmitted and stored for references and consultations. Medical images occupy huge space; in order to transmit these images may delay the process of image transmission in critical times. Image compression techniques provide a better solution to combat bandwidth scarcity problems, and transmit same image in a much lower bandwidth requirements, more faster and at the same time maintain quality. In this paper a differential image compression method is developed in which medical images are taken from a wounded patient and are compressed to reduce the bit rate of these images. Results indicate that on average 25% compression on images is achieved with 3.5 MOS taken from medical doctors and other paramedical staff the ultimately user of the images
