The future of mobile apps for teaching and learning

A new definition of m-learning has been presented in the first chapter. It was modified from a definition presented by Sharples, Taylor, and Vavoula in 2007. In Chapter 1, Crompton, Muilenburg, and Berge defined m-learning as "learning across multiple contexts, through social and content interactions, using personal electronic devices" (Crompton, 2013, p. 4). This chapter departs from this definition and focuses on mobile applications (apps) and technologies in this context

Introducing a mobile learning attitude scale for higher education

The Mobile Learning Scale v1 .0 consists of seven Likert items drawn from the key points developed for a paper on mobile learning prospects for informal learning in higher education (Khaddage & Knezek, 2011 ). Many of these points had been initially developed during the 2011 International Summit on ICT in Education (UNESCO, Paris, 2011 ), where the first author was Rapporteur for the working group Co-Chaired by the second author. In order to assess the performance of the instrument, data were gathered from 81 undergraduate and graduate university students during August and September of 2011. Data were assessed for strength of agreement on individual items and for internal consistency reliability of the seven item-scale. Initial indications are that the instrument has good reliability for university students (Alpha = .85) and can be useful for assessing attitudes toward mobile learning technologies and applications within the intended audience of higher education learners. Potential uses and plans for future research are discussed

This panel describes the refugeesā€™ crisis and its impact on school age children. The focus is on the Syrian children refugees in Mount Lebanon, an area that is usually forgotten. The United Nations offers schooling to primary school children in this remote region, but lack of resources in Mount Lebanon schools is evident, access to technologies and applications integration is very limited, and teachersā€™ frustration is obvious. There are a quarter of a million Syrian refugees in the country who still do not have access to formal education in the Lebanese school system. The country is looking to integrate and develop better educational opportunities to provide better access to education via technologies. Quality education is the key to achieve sustainable development in all aspects, especially if this continues in emergency and crises, this was the topic of discussion at the UNESCO headquarter in Paris during the Mobile Learning Week 2017, and the presented case study is to deal with the refugee crises and how to better provide teaching and learning opportunities via mobile

The world is now connected virtual and mobile, it is currently going through a fundamental transformation in the way we humans work, perform tasks and activities. Automation and ā€˜thinking machinesā€™ are replacing basic human tasks and jobs, and changing the skills that organizations are looking for in their people. In this paper, the authors discuss current technological innovations and how our world is changing rapidly in all aspects. New set of skills is needed; hence the authors focus on crucial practices and skills that are needed to be taught to harness our children for the future. The authors emphasis on teachers and proposed an innovative model the TTT (Training Teachers to Train) model that could be used to train teachers on how to teach these skills to their students and how to embrace and connect effectively with the world. Innovations are discussed, crucial skills are identified and an innovative model is proposed

Towards a Persuasive Design Pattern for a Gamified M-Learning Environment

    Get PDF
New innovative technologies create opportunities for persuasive engagement. Persuasive technology is all about software, systems and applications designed to hook, reinforce, change and shape the attitudes of the learners without using coercion or deception. Persuasive design pattern if applied effectively and efficiently may influence learnersā€™ attitudes towards the learning task, and may hook them to the specific learning activity offered via a gamified mobile application. In this paper the concept of persuasive design pattern in gamified m-learning platforms should be introduced to the scientific community. Persuasive design in a gamified mobile learning environment is described and persuasive set of design patterns appropriate to a gamified mobile environment is introduced. These persuasive design pattern are divided into three categories to suit to the appropriate learning environment

The ipad global embrace! Are we branding mobile learning?

Mobile computing is taking the educational institutions into a new era of instruction. Educational institutions globally are opting for new mobile devices to integrate, and it seems that the vast majority are integrating the iPad without even looking at other options, they are unintentionally branding mobile learning. We believe that mobile learning should not be branded, should not be restricted and should not be made device specific, operating system specific, controlled and brand specific. This paper is based on a global panel discussion entitled: Is this an iPad Revolution or Mobile Learning Revolution. Also this paper presents an argument as to why is the iPad dominating in education with a focus on the current iPad initiatives in the UAE, few possible assumptions on why educational institutions are opting for the iPad are discussed, and some suggested recommendations on what educational institutions should know before making the decision about this integration
