    STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHING ESP FOR SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SCIENCE PROGRAM

    This study investigates ESP students' perception of ESP teaching effectiveness for Social and Political Science from the non-English Department. Data were collected from forty-six participants from three Social and Political Science Program Departments, Darul 'Ulum University. To obtain the data, questionnaires and interviews were employed as the instruments. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using descriptive analysis into four categories; material, teaching method, learning motivation, and classroom management. The findings showed that some students were dissatisfied with the ESP materials given. However, the students perceived that they need to take the ESP materials to have professional communication skills for future careers. Additionally, it was also found that the roles of lectures' guidance in learning ESP were important. Finally, the interview results reveal the difficulties the students face in learning ESP, including vocabulary, pronunciation, reading comprehension, and grammatical structure

    Technical Guidance For The Preparation Of AKM-Based National Assessment Of English Learning for State Senior High School Teachers In Surabaya

    As a substitute for the National Examination (UN), the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) has prepared a National Assessment program. The National Assessment is a program to assess the quality of each school, madrasah, and equality program at the primary and secondary levels. The quality of the education unit is assessed based on the primary student learning outcomes (literacy, numeracy, and character), the quality of the teaching and learning process, and the climate of the academic unit that supports learning. The information was obtained from three main instruments: Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM), the Character Survey, and the Learning Environment Survey. Because this program is still limited to being introduced in the world of education as a substitute for the National Examination, there are still many things that the assessment implementer asks. Therefore, for the assessment of student learning outcomes, technical guidance for the teacher of SMA Negeri in Surabaya is arranged, which is expected to provide insight in the preparation of assessments that impact increasing students' critical thinking skills. This technical guidance is under community service activity from the faculty member of English Education Study Program.Sebagai pengganti Ujian Nasional (UN), Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Kemendikbud) telah menyiapkan program Penilaian Nasional. Asesmen Nasional adalah program untuk menilai kualitas setiap sekolah, madrasah, dan program pemerataan di tingkat dasar dan menengah. Kualitas satuan pendidikan dinilai berdasarkan hasil belajar siswa sekolah dasar (literasi, numerasi, dan karakter), kualitas proses belajar mengajar, dan iklim satuan akademik yang mendukung pembelajaran. Informasi diperoleh dari tiga instrumen utama: Penilaian Kompetensi Minimum (AKM), Survei Karakter, dan Survei Lingkungan Belajar. Karena program ini masih sebatas diperkenalkan di dunia pendidikan sebagai pengganti Ujian Nasional, masih banyak hal yang ditanyakan oleh pelaksana penilaian. Oleh karena itu, untuk penilaian hasil belajar siswa disusun bimbingan teknis bagi guru SMA Negeri di Surabaya yang diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan dalam penyusunan penilaian yang berdampak pada peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa. Bimbingan teknis ini merupakan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dari dosen Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris

    This community service implementation aims to give EFL teachers new perspectives on managing the online materials using CI-LMS. The service employs a field observation method. The participants were high school EFL teachers in Sidoarjo district. The activities were a one-day seminar and online training using CI-LMS and WhatsApp group. The results of this study indicate that participants are satisfied with the training provided, but on the other hand, many participants seem not yet ready to use the CI-LMS shortly. CI-LMS is considered an excellent online learning media for developing the teaching and learning system during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many teachers are not ready to use this platform at this time. For this reason, ongoing assistance to teachers is essential

    Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan model penyusunan asesmen inovatif dengan menerapkan paradigma Backward Design serta memanfaatkan teknologi dan kecerdasan buatan (AI) dalam prosesnya. Melalui metode identifikasi kebutuhan, pengembangan model asesmen, pelatihan, pemanfaatan teknologi dan AI, serta evaluasi, kegiatan ini berhasil memberikan kontribusi signifikan dalam meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di SMA Kabupaten Sidoarjo. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan AI dan teknologi dalam penyusunan asesmen berbasis Backward Design dapat meningkatkan efisiensi, akurasi, dan relevansi asesmen. Kedepannya, diharapkan kegiatan seperti ini dapat diperluas ke wilayah lain untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di Indonesia

    TRAINING IN WRITING SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE ON CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH FOR STATE JUNIOR HIGH EFL TEACHERS IN SURABAYA: REFERENCES MANAGEMENT AND ANTI-PLAGIARISM SOFTWARE

    Writing scientific papers and scientific publications are an integral part of teacher professional competencies. Thus, continuous improvement of their skills and abilities is essential. To actively participate in this development, the community service program team so-called Pengabdian Pada Masyarakat (PPM) took the initiative to provide training in collaboration with the management of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher of state junior high school (MGMP) in Surabaya. A team of speakers consisting of assisted lecturers delivered custom-made materials, specially composed to support EFL Teachers in a practical and applicable format. Fifty-four out of sixty-three invited EFL teachers have managed to participate in this offline training. The participants find the workshop positive and more than eighty percent of the teachers are willing to try and utilize the supporting software

    TEHNICAL GUIDANCE FOR DEVELOPING PROJECT-BASED READING-VIEWING TEACHING MODULES FOR CLASS X OF EFL TEACHERS

    This technical guidance aims at providing a training in preparing project-based reading teaching modules for tenth grade English teachers. This training is to design a module that integrates the Kurikulum Merdeka with a project-based approach. This aim is to ensure that the teaching modules prepared relevant to the learning materials set by the government, while still offering interesting and meaningful content for students. The participants are the EFL teachers of senior high school in Sidoarjo. The method applied involves systematic stages, including literature study, needs analysis, goal formulation, material preparation, and validation by education experts and English language experts. This technical guidance also emphasizes the importance of a project-based approach in reading learning, explore potential projects that are relevant to students' real lives, and offer effective strategies and techniques in designing and implementing project-based teaching modules. Also, it discusses aspects of evaluation in project-based Reading-Viewing learning, including assessment of student performance and evaluation of teaching modules. It is hoped that the results of this training can make a positive contribution to improving the quality of Reading-Viewing learning in class X. Teachers are expected to improve their skills in designing and managing learning that is interesting, interactive, and relevant to students' needs and interests. In addition, it is hoped that there will also be an increase in students' interest and motivation in developing their English reading skills

    YouTube Vlogging: promoting self-regulation in public speaking

    This study explored the use of YouTube video blogging to promote self-regulation in an English for Public Speaking class. The self-regulation includes four essential components namely planning, monitoring the plans, controlling and changing the plans, and reflecting on the works. Furthermore, the investigation was to determine what self-regulation improvement has developed through YouTube vlogging and how YouTube vlogging can improve students’ self-regulation. The research method was a Classroom Action Research. To obtain the data, Self-Regulation Questionnaires in the Pre-Survey and Post-Survey, students’ journal entries, and semi-structured interviews were employed as the instruments. Then, the data were analyzed using Quantitative and Qualitative approaches. The data analyses results show that participants improve their self-regulation. The improvement can be seen from the results of the Post-Survey compared to Pre-Survey and the second students’ journal entries compared to the first students’ journal entries. Furthermore, the results of semi-structured interviews reveal that the improvement was caused by the process of YouTube vlogging creation

    Recent innovations in online education have created an opportunity for hybrid learning, combining online and traditional learning. Hybrid learning leads to particular challenges for pre-service teachers, such as the way to manage the materials. Furthermore, hybrid learning materials can be developed using technology to create multimedia content that is more interactive than traditional print materials. Digital tools such as video, sound, animations, and graphics are powerful tools in the teacher's hands to engage learners and provide immersive learning experiences. This study aims to investigate pre-service teachers' perceptions of hybrid learning materials development. The mixed-method approach with questionnaire, documentation, and interview was employed to gain the data. The study result has shown that pre-service teachers perceive technology in a positive light when it is used for teaching purposes appropriately. Given this information, policymakers suggested having an investment in developing hybrid-learning materials

Dengan kondisi saat ini, setiap guru harus belajar bagaimana merencanakan dan menggunakan media digital storytelling dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Banyak guru yang membutuhkan bantuan untuk memahami bagaimana merencanakan dan menggunakan media digital storytelling dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang sesuai dengan karakteristik siswa dan materi. Oleh karena itu, dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini, sebagai wujud nyata dari kegiatan para dosen Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya melibatkan guru-guru yang mengajar Bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri Paket A, B, dan C Kota Surabaya untuk mengikuti bimbingan teknis penggunaan digital storytelling dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Dengan mengikuti bimbingan teknis ini, para guru dapat merencanakan dan menggunakan media digital storytelling dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan karakteristik siswa dan materi dalam kurikulum yang berlaku
