Photoreductive dissolution of ferrihydrite by methanesulfinic acid: Evidence of a direct link between dimethylsulfide and iron-bioavailability
Within open‐ocean regions where excess macronutrients are present, phytoplankton growth is limited by the bioavailability of iron supplied to these areas primarily within atmospheric aerosols of crustal origin. However, processes that control the abundance of biologically accessible iron in these aerosols are largely unknown. Here we show that dissolution of ferrihydrite, a surrogate iron(oxy)hydroxide phase found in atmospheric waters, is enhanced in the presence of methanesulfinic acid (MSIA, CH3SO2H, a dimethylsulfide (DMS) oxidation intermediate) in laboratory irradiation experiments with aqueous suspensions that simulate marine aerosol particles. The increased release of soluble Fe(II) is attributed to a species specific and direct photochemical reduction rather than a proton‐promoted effect, and suggests an efficient mechanism by which iron‐starved phytoplankton can actively increase aerosol iron‐bioavailability by increasing DMS emissions
An upper bound for the minimum weight of the dual codes of desarguesian planes
AbstractWe show that a construction described in [K.L. Clark, J.D. Key, M.J. de Resmini, Dual codes of translation planes, European J. Combin. 23 (2002) 529–538] of small-weight words in the dual codes of finite translation planes can be extended so that it applies to projective and affine desarguesian planes of any order pm where p is a prime, and m≥1. This gives words of weight 2pm+1−pm−1p−1 in the dual of the p-ary code of the desarguesian plane of order pm, and provides an improved upper bound for the minimum weight of the dual code. The same will apply to a class of translation planes that this construction leads to; these belong to the class of André planes.We also found by computer search a word of weight 36 in the dual binary code of the desarguesian plane of order 32, thus extending a result of Korchmáros and Mazzocca [Gábor Korchmáros, Francesco Mazzocca, On (q+t)-arcs of type (0,2,t) in a desarguesian plane of order q, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 108 (1990) 445–459]
The Impact of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Deferred Prosecution Program
This paper analyzes the impact of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Deferred Prosecution Program (DPP) on participation outcome patterns and compares recidivism rates between a sample of DPP participants (695) and a comparison group (991) of defendants found guilty through traditional adjudication from February 28, 2011 and December 5, 2012 with recidivism rates through June 6, 2014. Binary logistic and cox proportional regressions were utilized to evaluate the program. No statistically significant difference in re-arrest rates was found for a sample of DPP participants and a comparison group of defendants found guilty through traditional adjudication. However, DPP did have a statistically significant effect on re-arrest rates for women charged with theft; in such cases, DPP reduced the likelihood of re-arrest by roughly 76%
Binary codes from m-ary n-cubes Q(n) (m)
We examine the binary codes from adjacency matrices of the graph with vertices the nodes
of the m-ary n-cube Qmn
and with adjacency de ned by the Lee metric. For n = 2 and m odd,
we obtain the parameters of the code and its dual, and show the codes to be LCD. We also
nd s-PD-sets of size s + 1 for s < m1
2 for the dual codes, i.e. [m2; 2m 1;m]2 codes, when
n = 2 and m 5 is odd
#CRCFREE: Using Social Media to Reduce Colorectal Cancer Risk in Rural Adults
Objectives: In this study, we pilot-tested #CRCFree, a Facebook-based intervention aimed at reducing colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in rural Appalachian adults at risk for CRC. Methods: Participants were 56 rural Appalachian adults aged ≥ 50 years. Daily #CRCFree Facebook posts addressed diet, physical activity, and CRC screening. Participants’ sociodemographics, diet, body mass index, physical activity, and CRC screening status were measured pre- and post- intervention. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) assessed dietary patterns. Facebook engagement was measured throughout the intervention. A post-intervention focus group evaluated intervention acceptability. Results: Participants were Caucasian, aged 58 ± 6 years, and predominantly female (66%). Postintervention, HEI scores increased (49.9 ± 9.9 vs 58.6 ± 12.1, p
