    Ceramic Transfer Printing

    Get PDF
This is one of the first books dedicated to the creative practice and research of ceramic transfers or decals with a focus on the creative potential for studio-based artists or designer-makers. A ceramic transfer allows pictures, patterns or text to be transferred onto ceramic forms - 2D and 3D. This added layer of meaning might have artistic or commercial ends. Importantly, print can achieve distinct aesthetic effects on ceramics that are not possible by using other decoration methods such as hand painting. Drawing on over twenty years of experience, Kevin Petrie offers a focused analysis of the potential of ceramic transfer printing as a creative medium. He traces the history of the subject and explains the distinctive visual qualities of a range of transfer printing methods. Petrieā€™s research into the speciļ¬c materials and techniques for making versatile screen-printed ceramic transfers are explained with an emphasis on water-based systems. Other approaches by artist researchers (UK, Netherlands, USA, Canada, Germany) are also brought together for the first time and recent developments with digital transfers appraised. A range of case studies shows the potential and diversity of approach in this area, which extends beyond ceramics to include enamel on metal and glass. During preparation the publishers decided to increase the scale of the book and launch it through a new series, `The new ceramicsā€™. The book was subsequently accepted by The American Ceramic Society, Ohio, for simultaneously publication in the UK and USA. Since publication the book has sold c2000 copies. Aspects of the book have been expanded and published in an article for ā€˜Ceramic Review ā€“ The International Magazine of Ceramic Art and Craftā€™

Over the past few years the news media has increasingly highlighted the problem of peer bullying in schools. Within school communities there is a considerable divergence of opinion as to how it should be viewed and what should be done to address it. Research in the area of bullying began to flourish following the pioneering work of Dan Olweus in the early 1970s and has sufficient depth to provide considerable direction to schools. In the last 20 years, a number of researchers in New Zealand and Australia have contributed substantially to the growing body of knowledge. This article takes a brief overview of the problem and examines a number of the associated myths about bullying, in the light of recent research

One tertiary institution sought to research the perceptions that tertiary students have of role-plays as a means of learning. Role-plays were used across a range of disciplines at that institution including: teacher training, business and chemistry. Each of these disciplines used a role-play in their classes and then collected opinions from the students on the usefulness of the activity. It was discovered that students value role-plays as a means to challenge preconceived ideas, encourage creative thinking, assist students in applying theory to practice, make lessons fun and provide active learning experiences that increase student learning and engagement

    Faith Engagement at School

The ability of teachers to engage and develop the faith journey of students is seen as a central endeavour in faith-based schools. Much has been written in the literature regarding approaches that may be effective in facilitating this process. This study analysed qualitative data collected from 368 Year 5ā€“12 students from one faith-based school in Australia. Students reported on the key areas they believe assist in developing their faith, in addition to aspects they believe could be improved in this regard. A significant difference was found between the attitudes of those who reported not having a faith background and those who did. This chapter builds onto findings reported in the previous chapter

The study of school climate has gained increased attention over the past 25 years, with research indicating significant relationships between school climate and a number of social, emotional and academic outcomes for students. An aspect of school climate that has seen little attention, however, is the relationship between the development of faith and positive school climate. This study analyses data from 368 students in one faith-based school in Australia, utilising self-reported measures of school climate and faith engagement. A significant relationship is found between these variables, indicating the potential impact that school climate and faith engagement may have on each other. The study discusses the implications of these findings and makes suggestions in relation to the strengthening of these two areas within faith-based schools
