The evaluation of the imact of form-based code and conventional zoning on Fort McPherson redevelopment

As an emerging urban design tool, form-base codes have been increasingly used by urban planners and designers since the 1980s. Focusing on the actual built environment, form-based codes can provide more predictable results of future development and help planners to more easily communicate with people through detailed diagrams to develop consensual visions. Despite all of these advantages, however, there is no study identifying the advantages of form-based codes over conventional codes in both quantitative and qualitative ways. This thesis proposes what aspects of form-based codes have a positive impact on community revitalization compared with conventional zoning and the differences between the regulation systems by establishing evaluation criteria - sustainability, connectivity, diversity, and design optimization and compactness. For clearer analysis, physical standards in both regulation systems will be considered, and those standards will be directly applied to the actual community development project, the Fort McPherson Redevelopment Plan.M.S.Committee Chair: Michael Dobbins; Committee Member: Perry Yang; Committee Member: Richard Dagenhar

The changing role of employment status in marriage formation among young Korean adults

    No full text
Background: Despite a persistent decline in Korea's marriage rates over the past three decades, there is a striking lack of research on the transition to marriage among young Koreans. Similarly, few studies have examined how economic determinants have evolved over the past several decades, even as the Korean social and socioeconomic structure has undergone substantial transformation. Methods: This paper examines changes over time in the determinants of marriage formation in Korea, using employment history data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) on three cohorts of young adults born in the 1950s‒1970s. Results: Results indicate that, for women, the marital implications of being employed reversed over the three decades examined. While working decreased the odds of getting married for women born in the 1950s, it had no statistically significant effect for those born in the 1960s, and it strongly increased the odds of marriage for the most recent (1970s) cohort of women. For their part, men's employment not only continued to positively predict getting married over the three decades, but its impact became stronger with each cohort, so that a man's odds of transition to first marriage was most strongly tied to his employment status for those born in the 1970s, as compared to earlier cohorts. Contribution: This study contributes to the literature by addressing the relationship between marriage timing and economic resources using more direct measures, examining the association between mandatory military service and marriage formation, and testing if determinants of marriage timing may evolve over time in Korea

From the Abacus to Big Data: The Evolution of Data-Driven Planning in the U.S. and Where the Field will be Headed

    No full text
The nature of planning involves a set of decision-making processes to fulfill people’s needs and expectations of where they live, work, and play. Dealing with the nature of planning—complexity, uncertainty, and disagreement—requires specific tools to explore various aspects of the built environment as a whole. Various types of data have been extracted, transformed, and loaded to describe the past and current conditions of the built environment, and planners have developed and applied data-driven planning tools to explore the knowns and unknowns of the urban futures and transform them into a set of actions based on the goals with consensus. This article identifies the evolution of systematic ways of collecting data, setting up criteria, and analyzing them according to the contextual features of planning tools, focusing on where the field is headed for planning

Determinants of Interregional Migration Flows in Korea by Age Groups, 1995-2014

    No full text
Despite the growing importance of interregional migration at the local level in rapidly aging society, past literature overlooked the relationship between these two demographic phenomena. To better understand the determinants of interregional migration and its implications for population aging, this study estimated fixed-effects models derived from the gravity model of migration using population registration data. Contrary to theoretical expectation, economic determinants of migration showed similar patterns across three age groups. Other than the effect of crude marriage rate for young age group, life course variables showed inconsistent effects on migration. Trends in migration flows by geographical regions indicated that some provinces are in double jeopardy because their elderly population is increasing while the young population decreases. Visual inspection of migration systems drawn from social network analysis suggested that migration streams between Seoul and Gyeonggi overwhelms all other regions and that Ulsan and Jeju are isolated throughout the periods

Improving team performance at ESCTOUR: An insider action research

    No full text
In this study, we aim to do an action research on improving teamwork for ESCTOUR. Philippines tourism has grown rapidly in recent years. According to Department of Tourism Secretary, there were about 4.7 million foreigners visited the country in 2013 and South Korea is the biggest source of tourism. While International Air Transport Association (IATA) mentioned that airlines expect to see 31% increase in passengers numbers between 2012 to 2017. Thus, the related industries like airline and hospitality management posts a greater demand of products and services in the coming years. Hence, ESCTOUR, which is, involve in logistical requirements of tourist, is seeking to achieve organizational improvement in terms of team performance so as to cope with the fast-paced environment in the industry. This study will test of 7S framework, business life cycle, brainstorming, team building, leadership and action research cycle in improving team performance of ESCTOUR. The objective of this study is to help ESCTOUR manage the business on high demand of services required in the industry and to improve business performance while achieving team work and cooperation in the organization, amidst cultural differences. Hence, this study assesses the capabilities of the company and its employees moving forward and planning the continuity of the programs that will be beneficial to the company

Handgrip Strength and Cognitive Function among Elderly Koreans: Insights from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing

This study aims to assess handgrip strength as a predictor of cognitive decline within men and women in Korea. A random-intercept logistic regression is fit to estimate the status changes in cognitive function throughout all rounds of the KLoSA, a nationally-representative survey of adults aged 45 years and older. Males in the highest quartile were 71.9% less likely to experience cognitive impairment than those in the lowest quartile. The odds of cognitive impairment for men in the third and second quartiles reduced by 62.6% and 60.4% respectively. Similarly, the odds of cognitive impairment for women declined as 72.7%, 63.0%, and 41.8% for fourth, third, and second quartile, respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. These results imply that assessing and monitoring handgrip strength may enable us to identify subgroups of the elderly with higher likelihood of cognitive impairment in Korea

Digital Transformation Characteristics of the Semiconductor Industry Ecosystem

    No full text
This study investigates the characteristics of competitive strategies, digital competencies, and management performance as digital drivers in the semiconductor industry. We constructed a conceptual research model and proposed five research hypotheses based on previous studies and analyzed the fit of the research model using IBM SPSS AMOS software. In total, 131 companies specializing in semiconductor materials, components, equipment, and fabless design comprised the sample for analysis. To improve the fit of the research model, several unnecessary paths and measurement items were removed, the final research model was selected, and the five hypotheses were tested. The results indicate that digital drivers positively affect digital competencies, which, in turn, positively affect efficiency-centered and novelty-centered business models. Regarding the relationship between these business models and management performance, only the novelty-centered business model positively affects non-financial performance. These findings could help formulate digital transformation strategies related to products/services, processes, and business models at the firm level, as well as establish policies such as regulation and support programs at the government level

Social Attitudes to Cross-Border Marriages in Korea and Taiwan

This article aims to compare attitudes toward cross-border marriages in Korea and Taiwan using data from a unique questionnaire that was administered in both countries in 2007 and 2008. Moreover, this study proposes historical and political analyses alongside the conventional social quality approach, as a means of avoiding decontextualized interpretations of social development. Upon surveying indicators of social cohesion, inclusiveness, and empowerment based on a social quality framework, the results indicate that Taiwanese citizens show a lower level of social inclusiveness toward marriage migrants than Korean citizens show, though the Taiwanese show more social cohesion and empowerment than the latter. Social attitudes toward marriage migrants in the two countries imply that transnational marriages are likely to bring about various forms of social conflict, unless policies can be developed that account for the complex nature of such arrangements
