On statistical comparison of efficiencies of fishing gear

    Get PDF
The distribution of fish caught by experimental gill nets has been found to be in the Poisson or Negative binomial form. Using this information, application of Chi-square test as suggested by Mood et al. (1974) has been illustrated, for comparing the efficiencies of gill nets. This test provides an alternative to Anova F-test especially in the context of significance of non-additivity for the two-way model. Based on the present work and the findings by Nair (1982) and Nair & Alagaraja (1982, 1984) an outline approach for statistical comparison of the efficiencies of fishing gear is presented

A programme to carry out analysis of variance: two-way classification on Micro 2200

A brief description is given of a program to carry out analysis of variance two-way classification on MICRO 2200, for use in fishery data processing

On certain allometric relations of the spiny lobster Panulirus polyphagus (Herbst)

    Get PDF
Certain allometric relations of the spiny lobster Panulirus polyphagus are derived. While the relation between tail length and tail weight is made for both the sexes together, separate relations are derived for the sexes in the case of tail length versus total length. For conservation and economic purposes, it appears that the undersized ones are to be released alive

Adoption of CIFT fishing boat designs

    Get PDF
Information about the adoption of CIFT fishing boat designs was collected from 54 boat building yards of the country. The majority of the boats were built as per CIFT designs. The types of wood used and the designs were dependent upon each other. Other variables studied did not show significant effects upon the type of adoption. The CIFT designs were modified at some yards and these details are discussed

Development of an efficient trap for lobster fishing

    Get PDF
A modified trap was developed for fishing spiny lobsters. Experimental fishing was conducted using this trap along with traditional trap (as control) to assess the comparative efficiency. Design details and comparative efficiency of the modified trap is reported in this paper. From the analysis of variance, the difference in average catches between the modified trap and the control is found to be highly significant establishing the high efficiency of new trap

Estimation of fish production from Hirakud reservoir

    Get PDF
A suitable procedure based broadly on stratified random sampling for estimation of fish production from Hirakud reservoir is described. The total fish production for the years 1978 and 1979 from Hirakud reservoir, along with seasonal variation of different species is discussed

On the optimum mesh size for the capture of Barbus tor (Hamilton)

    Get PDF
Results of mesh selectivity experiments on B. tor are presented in this paper. Selectivity curve on the basis of maximum girth of fish in relation to perimeter of mesh was worked out. The optimum girth/mesh perimeter ratio was found to be 1.31. A linear regression of G+0.445L=12.8 was fitted for conversion of length to girth

Survey on the idle capacity of fish processing (freezing) plants in India - 2. East coast

    Get PDF
The extent of idle capacity in the fish processing (freezing) plants in the east coast of India estimated by stratified random sampling and the factors responsible for the same are reported. The estimates of idle capacity of fish processing plants in the east coast for the years 1978 and 1979 were respectively 75.9% and 72.5% on the basis of 250 working days per annum and double shift per day. The percentage errors of estimates worked out to 6.9 for 1978 and 4.7 for 1979. The corresponding figures were worked out on the basis of 200 working days also. Substantial under-utilisation of plants in all the maritime states in the east coast accounted mainly to non-availability of raw material, high cost of production, shortage of power, scarcity of ice and potable water during peak season and frequent labour troubles
