AGRIBUSINESS AND THE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS PROFESSION: RESEARCH AGENDAS IN AGRIBUSINESS

    Get PDF
This paper presents a summary of work by various groups on the potential for agribusiness research by agricultural economists over the past decade. Methodology to establish research priorities in agribusiness are reviewed. This review leads to a consideration of the agribusiness research issues including: funding sources, identifying users of agribusiness research, data needs, and limitations of agribusiness research programs. The final part of the paper presents a potpourri of suggested research initiatives in agribusiness research for agricultural economists. Research in these areas may be difficult for a number of reasons including: decreased reliance on economic theory as the sole paradigm, providing competitive advantage to a single agribusiness firm while balancing public and private needs and funding sources, and data confidentiality. Suggestions for outlets for academic research are presented.Agribusiness, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

First Record of Rhipiceridae (Coleoptera: Polyphaga: Dascilloidea) From Wisconsin

    Get PDF
The Cedar beetle family, Rhipiceridae, is recorded from Wisconsin for the first time. A single adult female of Sandalus niger was collected on a walkway along a forested path in south-central Wisconsin on 7 October 2000. This discovery represents not only the first record of Rhipiceridae from Wisconsin, but also the first record of the entire superfamily Dascilloidea, a relatively basal lineage of Elateriformia

FORECASTING FUTURE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOOD, AGRICULTURE, AND NATURAL RESOURCES HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATES USING ADJUSTED BUREAU OF LABOR FORECASTS

Forecasts of the number of future professionals required for an ongoing safe, efficient US food system are highly important. The demand for adequately prepared higher education graduates must be met by the US Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Education System. Without accurate forecasts of the human resource needs of the food sector of the economy, adequate professionals may not be available when needed. This research effort makes use of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasted employment opportunities. The estimation of professionals required in the food and agriculture sectors of the economy is developed by selecting and manipulating data from the BLS model that is relevant to food and agriculture careers. These forecasts of needed professionals can be used by Directors of Resident Instruction to manage the educational system to meet the food sector demands for adequately educated human resources.employment, employment opportunities, food, agriculture, natural resources, directed graphs, education, bureau of labor, Labor and Human Capital,

Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) of Wisconsin

    Get PDF
The first comprehensive faunal survey of the carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) of Wisconsin is presented. Six genera and 14 species are recorded from the state, including a new state record, Heterosilpha ramosa (Say). Nicrophorus americanus Olivier was not recovered during this study. An annotated checklist includes species-specific geographical and temporal distributions, remarks on foods and habitat, and counties of specimen collections for each species

WE\u27RE STILL EMERGING: A POETIC INQUIRY EXPLORING THE TENSIONS BETWEEN INCLUSIVE MINDSETS, TEACHER IDENTITY AND DISABILITY STIGMA

    Get PDF
This poetic inquiry sought to understand the tensions, perspectives and experiences of teachers as they work to create more inclusive mindsets and identities despite working in a system that allows for ability profiling and disability stigma in schools. This work fills a gap in the literature in that not much is known about the journeys teachers take as they come to identify as inclusive educators. The conceptual framework drew from scholarship in the fields of Disability Studies in Education, Studies in Ableism, critical pedagogy, and teacher identity. Conducted in a professional development school, I worked as the university\u27s professor-in-residence to provide professional development for teachers that centered a disability memoir and critical reflection. Qualitative data was gathered through interviews and book club discussions. Lines from these transcripts were then used to construct transcription poems. After creating these initial poems, threshold poems were then created that juxtaposed a transcript poem with a found poem from each of the four key areas of the conceptual framework. These poems brought theory and praxis into dialogue, supplemented by my own analytical thinking inspired by the theorists\u27 and participants\u27 words. Significant findings indicate that: (1) ableism is deeply embedded in schools, policy and practice, with teachers inadvertently working from a place of dysconscious ableism; (2) inclusion must be presented as both an ideological commitment and actionable process; (3) teachers\u27 stories to live by must be reframed so that inclusive mindsets are magnified among the school community; and (4) PDSs partnerships can be a driving vehicle to develop inclusive cultures among schools

The Impact of Gender on Nursing Knowledge Development in the Perioperative Setting

This treatise explored the history of nursing within a radical feminist framework, encompassing the facets of women\u27s history, the sex/gender system, men\u27s and women\u27s nature, women\u27s language and the system of patriarchy. Through this framework the literature suggested that there was an impact on knowledge development in nursing settings, especially in the perioperative setting, because nursing was a female dominated profession in a patriarchal society. The literature shows that women as healers in history, were marginalised by the modern medical profession. Modern nursing, because of its female domination and the values of culture at the time of its inception, is based on the supposed feminine attributes of caring, nurturing and self sacrifice, and this makes it subject and subordinate to men, and in particular, male medicine. Women\u27s perceived place in western society and the lack of women centred history have all impacted on knowledge development. In order to gain knowledge that would make it more powerful; nursing has emulated the empirical knowledge of medicine, as opposed to the aesthetic and personal knowledge that makes nursing the caring and patient centred profession it should be. To further examine the knowledge that nurses, and in particular perioperative nurses have developed, a qualitative historical approach is suggested. An historical design may be a useful approach to study the history and knowledge development of nurses from premises that are based on feminist values. This would include historical research based in women\u27s language, with an emphasis on the impact of women\u27s place in society, giving a rich, more complete and meaningful history of nursing and nursing knowledge in the perioperative realm
