The paper compares different views on technological society that develop the posthumanist position but avoid technological determinism or social constructivism.  Special attention is given to the dichotomy between the concept of biopolitics (Foucault) and the concept of cosmopolitics (Latour) in relation to the issues of plurality and hybridity

Visions, Values, and Videos: Revisiting Envisionings in Service of UbiComp Design for the Home

    Get PDF
UbiComp has been envisioned to bring about a future dominated by calm computing technologies making our everyday lives ever more convenient. Yet the same vision has also attracted criticism for encouraging a solitary and passive lifestyle. The aim of this paper is to explore and elaborate these tensions further by examining the human values surrounding future domestic UbiComp solutions. Drawing on envisioning and contravisioning, we probe members of the public (N=28) through the presentation and focus group discussion of two contrasting animated video scenarios, where one is inspired by "calm" and the other by "engaging" visions of future UbiComp technology. By analysing the reasoning of our participants, we identify and elaborate a number of relevant values involved in balancing the two perspectives. In conclusion, we articulate practically applicable takeaways in the form of a set of key design questions and challenges.Comment: DIS'20, July 6-10, 2020, Eindhoven, Netherland

New media theory as ontology of the computer code

    No full text
The work establishes new media studies in relation to different disciplines that were reflecting contemporary technologies in the 20th century. It emphasizes the likeness o f new media theory to posthumanist philosophy. New media technologies are specific due to the performativity o f the computer code and the overall phenomenon o f software that interconnect different aspects o f the organic and inorganic life. The hybrid and emergent consequences o f this integration o f machines, humans and nature radically challenges our views o f what is technology, society and even what is ontology. Ontology o f the code is an attempt to highlight the dynamic and process driven qualities o f the reality as the ground o f todays technological acceleration. With the help o f the computer codes it generates ever more complex forms o f symbiosis and hybrid collectivity like our cities and the whole globalized society. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org

Exploratory sandboxes and experimental AI ethics: probing Epistemic Certainty, Issues of Trust, and Governance

    No full text
Experimental and participatory engagements over serious games, simulations, co-design experiments, and sandboxes are increasingly used in AI ethics and regulation. This paper examines the functions and implications of these engagements in current and emerging use cases of Large Language Models (LLMs). It pre-registers a study that will design a mock trial of a concrete ML application that has caused harm and collect data from different experimental and exploratory formats. The study aims to test two competing claims: one that these engagements only improve the understanding and trust in the technology and policy process, and another that they enable agency and negotiation among stakeholders despite epistemic uncertainties. The paper reflects on the role of epistemic certainty in decision making about disruptive new algorithmic services and the possibilities of minimalist and experimental approaches to AI ethics and governance

Probing Ephemeral Futures: scenarios as fashion design

Linking scenario thinking and fashion design this paper explores connections to design scenarios, highlighting the role of ephemerality. First, we develop the time issues of fashion design based scenarios from the perspective of the ephemerality of contemporariness. To explore ephemeral transformations in scenario thinking we propose a conceptual framework and introduce fashion- design transformation types. We extend the "tailoring voting" conversation issued from Oxford Futures Forum 2014 to discuss prospective transformations in decision-making processes. We finally explore the implications of such a perspective for scenario planning and fashion design
