    EFFECT OF INCREASING VERTICAL CENTRE OF MASS DISPLACEMENT ON THE BIOMECHANICAL STIMULUS OF TRADITIONAL RESISTANCE TRAINING EXERCISES

    This study investigated the effect of systematically increasing vertical COM displacement on the biomechanical stimulus of a traditional resistance training exercise. Fourteen male rugby union athletes performed maximum velocity repetitions of the deadlift to four different final vertical positions with external loads of 20, 40 and 60% 1RM. Significant increases in force, velocity and power were obtained with lifting techniques that resulted in greater vertical COM displacement, although significant interaction effects revealed that improvements were attenuated with heavier loads. These results have applications to strength and conditioning practice, whereby the traditional resistance training exercise stimulus can be augmented without imposing the overly large eccentric musculoskeletal loads characteristic of landing from maximal weighted vertical jumps

    The present study sought to examine the effect of altering the position of external loads on the kinematics and kinetics of weighted vertical jumps in 29 resistance trained rugby union athletes. Vertical jumps were performed with loads of 20, 40 and 60% squat 1RM with the load positioned: 1) on the posterior aspect of the shoulder using a traditional barbell (TBJ); and 2) at arms’ length using a hexagonal barbell (HBJ).     The Leadership Role of Psychiatrists in the NHS

    This article explores leadership in the context of psychiatry in the NHS. It identifies considerable policy challenges facing psychiatry such as recent attempts to upgrade mental health services and bring them up to par with other services. It suggests it will become increasingly necessary for the profession to respond to such challengers by engaging with leadership at various levels. The article suggests there may be merit in exploring one particular approach to leadership, namely transformational leadership, given its emphasis on dealing with change. Psychiatrists may find the behaviours associated with this approach of particular relevance. However, it suggests that there may need to adopt a particular variant of transformational leadership that acknowledges both the achievement of objectives and showing genuine concern for followers. The latter is important given the on going problem of clinical engagement in the NHS. The article concludes with the developmental implications in adopting this leadership approach

    The mediating effect of task presentation on collaboration and children's acquisition of scientific reasoning

    There has been considerable research concerning peer interaction and the acquisition of children's scientific reasoning. This study investigated differences in collaborative activity between pairs of children working around a computer with pairs of children working with physical apparatus and related any differences to the development of children's scientific reasoning. Children aged between 9 and 10 years old (48 boys and 48 girls) were placed into either same ability or mixed ability pairs according to their individual, pre-test performance on a scientific reasoning task. These pairs then worked on either a computer version or a physical version of Inhelder and Piaget's (1958) chemical combination task. Type of presentation was found to mediate the nature and type of collaborative activity. The mixed-ability pairs working around the computer talked proportionally more about the task and management of the task; had proportionally more transactive discussions and used the record more productively than children working with the physical apparatus. Type of presentation was also found to mediated children's learning. Children in same ability pairs who worked with the physical apparatus improved significantly more than same ability pairs who worked around the computer. These findings were partially predicted from a socio-cultural theory and show the importance of tools for mediating collaborative activity and collaborative learning

    Frequency of rare recessive mutations in unexplained late onset cerebellar ataxia.

    Sporadic late onset cerebellar ataxia is a well-described clinical presentation with a broad differential diagnosis that adult neurologists should be familiar with. However, despite extensive clinical investigations, an acquired cause is identified in only a minority of cases. Thereafter, an underlying genetic basis is often considered, even in those without a family history. Here we apply whole exome sequencing to a cohort of 12 patients with late onset cerebellar ataxia. We show that 33% of 'idiopathic' cases harbor compound heterozygous mutations in known ataxia genes, including genes not included on multi-gene panels, or primarily associated with an ataxic presentation

    A Heuristic Based on the Intrinsic Dimensionality for Reducing the Number of Cyclic DTW Comparisons in Shape Classification and Retrieval Using AESA

    Cyclic Dynamic Time Warping (CDTW) is a good dissimilarity of shape descriptors of high dimensionality based on contours, but it is computationally expensive. For this reason, to perform recognition tasks, a method to reduce the number of comparisons and avoid an exhaustive search is convenient. The Approximate and Eliminate Search Algorithm (AESA) is a relevant indexing method because of its drastic reduction of comparisons, however, this algorithm requires a metric distance and that is not the case of CDTW. In this paper, we introduce a heuristic based on the intrinsic dimensionality that allows to use CDTW and AESA together in classification and retrieval tasks over these shape descriptors. Experimental results show that, for descriptors of high dimensionality, our proposal is optimal in practice and significantly outperforms an exhaustive search, which is the only alternative for them and CDTW in these tasks

    Tapering practices of New Zealand's elite raw powerlifters

J Strength Cond Res 30(7): 1796-1804, 2016-The major aim of this study was to determine tapering strategies of elite powerlifters. Eleven New Zealand powerlifters (28.4 ± 7.0 years, best Wilks score of 431.9 ± 43.9 points) classified as elite were interviewed, using semistructured interviews, about their tapering strategies. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and content analyzed. Total training volume peaked 5.2 ± 1.7 weeks from competition while average training intensity (of 1 repetition maximum) peaked 1.9 ± 0.8 weeks from competition. During tapering, volume was reduced by 58.9 ± 8.4% while intensity was maintained (or slightly reduced) and the final weight training session was performed 3.7 ± 1.6 days out from competition. Participants generally stated that tapering was performed to achieve full recovery; that accessory work was removed around 2 weeks out from competition; and deadlifting takes longer to recover from than other lifts. Typically participants stated that trial and error, and changes based on "feel" were the sources of tapering strategies; equipment used and movements performed during tapering are the same as in competition; nutrition was manipulated during the taper (for weight cutting or performance aims); and poor tapering occurred when too long (1 week or more) was taken off training. These results suggest that athletes may benefit from continuing to strength train before important events with reduced volume and maintained intensity. Only exercises that directly assist sports performance should remain in the strength program during tapering, to assist with reductions in fatigue while maintaining/improving strength expression and performance
