The industry has been active in political lobbying that has slowed down Tobacco Control efforts, and has been very aggressive in marketing their products especially to youth. The Kenya Tobacco Situational Analysis (KTSA team) targeted two project priorities: enforcement of smoke free legislation, and monitoring the ban on advertising, promotion and sponsorship. This report outlines research activities of the project. A follow-up survey was undertaken and recommendations are drawn from these findings regarding sustaining the momentum in implementation of smoke-free laws

    The assessment describes the current status of tobacco control efforts in Kenya, what information is readily available in terms of published literature, the infrastructure already existing for tobacco control, and a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats). It provides a basis for discussion by stakeholders, and development of a proposal for a full situational analysis. Recommendations for short and long term actions required to avert the tobacco epidemic in Kenya are provided: for enforcement, capacity building, alternative crops, including further in-depth analysis of the tobacco industry, a search of their internal documents, and exploration of the extent of illicit trade
