Arbitrary cross-section SEM-cathodoluminescence imaging of growth sectors and local carrier concentrations within micro-sampled semiconductor nanorods
Future one-dimensional electronics require single-crystalline semiconductor free-standing nanorods grown with uniform electrical properties. However, this is currently unrealistic as each crystallographic plane of a nanorod grows at unique incorporation rates of environmental dopants, which forms axial and lateral growth sectors with different carrier concentrations. Here we propose a series of techniques that micro-sample a free-standing nanorod of interest, fabricate its arbitrary cross-sections by controlling focused ion beam incidence orientation, and visualize its internal carrier concentration map. ZnO nanorods are grown by selective area homoepitaxy in precursor aqueous solution, each of which has a (0001):+c top-plane and six {1–100}:m side-planes. Near-band-edge cathodoluminescence nanospectroscopy evaluates carrier concentration map within a nanorod at high spatial resolution (60 nm) and high sensitivity. It also visualizes +c and m growth sectors at arbitrary nanorod cross-section and history of local transient growth events within each growth sector. Our technique paves the way for well-defined bottom-up nanoelectronics
Interferometer design of the KAGRA gravitational wave detector
KAGRA is a cryogenic interferometric gravitational-wave detector being constructed at the underground
site of Kamioka mine in Gifu prefecture, Japan. We performed an optimization of the interferomter
design, to achieve the best sensitivity and a stable operation, with boundary conditions of classical
noises and under various practical constraints, such as the size of the tunnel or the mirror cooling capacity.
Length and alignment sensing schemes for the robust control of the interferometer are developed. In this
paper, we describe the detailed design of the KAGRA interferometer as well as the reasoning behind
design choices
Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of bulk liquids at ultra-low kinetic energy
Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-PES) of ultrafast dynamics in solution is presented. To measure the photoelectron kinetic energy distribution (PKED) that is free from inelastic scattering in solution, photoelectrons were generated with ultra-low kinetic energies (ULKE: <5 eV). Time constants of the elementary processes in the charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) reaction from I− to bulk water were in excellent agreement with those obtained by transient absorption spectroscopy, demonstrating the bulk-sensitivity of TR-PES-ULKE. The analysis suggests that the CTTS reaction proceeds via two intermediates, and that 30% of the first intermediate and 70% of the second intermediate respectively are quenched by geminate recombination between the electron and the neutral iodine atom

Dusty ERO Search behind Two Massive Clusters
We performed deep K'-band imaging observations of 2 massive clusters, MS
0451.6-0305 at z = 0.55 and MS 0440.5+0204 at z = 0.19, for searching
counterparts of the faint sub-mm sources behind these clusters, which would
provide one of the deepest extremely red object(ERO) samples. Comparing our
near-infrared images with optical images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope
and by the Subaru Telescope, we identified 13 EROs in these fields. The sky
distributions of EROs are consistent with the previous results, that there is a
sign of strong clustering among detected EROs. Also, the surface density with
corrected lensing amplification factors in both clusters are in good agreement
with that derived from previous surveys. We found 7 EROs and 3 additional very
red objects in a small area (\sim 0.6 arcmin^2) of the MS 0451.6-0305 field
around an extended SCUBA source. Many of their optical and near-infrared colors
are consistent with dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshifts(z \sim
1.0-4.0), and they may be constituting a cluster of dusty starburst galaxies
and/or lensed star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Their red J-K' colors and
faint optical magnitudes suggest they are relatively old massive stellar
systems with ages(>300 Mega years) suffering from dust obscuration. We also
found a surface-density enhancement of EROs around the SCUBA source in the MS

A Model for the 3He(\vec d, p)4He Reaction at Intermediate Energies
Polarization correlation coefficients have been measured atRIKEN for the \vec
3He(\vec d,p)4He reaction at intermediate energies. We propose a model for the
(\vec d, p) reaction mechanism using the pd elastic scattering amplitude which
is rigorously determined by a Faddeev calculation and using modern NN forces.
Our theoretical predictions for deuteron polarization observables A_y, A_{yy},
A_{xx} and A_{xz} at E_d=140, 200 and 270 MeV agree qualitatively in shape with

Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey for An Optical Counterpart of GW170817
We perform a -band survey for an optical counterpart of a binary neutron
star coalescence GW170817 with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam. Our untargeted
transient search covers deg corresponding to the credible
region of GW170817 and reaches the completeness magnitude of mag
on average. As a result, we find 60 candidates of extragalactic transients,
including J-GEM17btc (a.k.a. SSS17a/DLT17ck). While J-GEM17btc is associated
with NGC 4993 that is firmly located inside the 3D skymap of GW170817, the
other 59 candidates do not have distance information in the GLADE v2 catalog or
NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED). Among 59 candidates, 58 are located at
the center of extended objects in the Pan-STARRS1 catalog, while one candidate
has an offset. We present location, -band apparent magnitude, and time
variability of the candidates and evaluate the probabilities that they are
located inside of the 3D skymap of GW170817. The probability for J-GEM17btc is
being much higher than those for the other 59 candidates
(). Furthermore, the possibility, that at
least one of the other 59 candidates is located within the 3D skymap, is only
. Therefore, we conclude that J-GEM17btc is the most-likely and
