    Aquatic Effects of a Localized Oil Spill on Lake Conway, AR and Its Tributaries

    Oil spills, no matter where they occur, elicit environmental concern and avoiding these disasters should be a priority. Old pipelines that are not regularly maintained and carry large amounts of crude oil long distances are of particular concern. One such pipeline is the 65 year-old Pegasus pipeline owned by ExxonMobil. On March 29, 2013, 795,000 L of Wabasca Heavy Canadian crude oil spilled into a neighborhood of Mayflower, Arkansas, when the Pegasus pipeline ruptured. This spill led to the evacuation of many homes in the surrounding neighborhood. Drainage ditches in the affected neighborhood drained oil into a nearby cove of Lake Conway. This lake is popular for recreational fishing, thus concerns were raised not only about the potential effects of the oil spill on area residents, but also the lake and its biological communities. Ultimately, this project assessed the effect of the oil spill in water and sediment samples on freshwater test organisms. Samples were collected at 6 sites in the affected neighborhood and in Lake Conway. Chronic Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) tests were performed on water samples using Pimephales promelas and Ceriodaphnia dubia. Acute sediment toxicity tests were performed using Chironomus dilutus. These tests measured sub-lethal toxicity in at least one of the sampled sites, indicating that further investigation of environmental after-effects is warranted

    The Practitioner’s Guide to Properly Responding to Requests for Disclosure Under the Texas Discovery Rules

    Discovery, a pretrial procedure used to obtain information relating to the litigation, generally is the largest cost of civil litigation. By its very nature, discovery also is intrusive and invasive. Many practitioners are quick to dispute discovery requests, slow to produce information requested, and all too-eager to object at every stage of the discovery process. This article relates to one of the most common types of written discovery—Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 194 disclosure requests, the responses to which are often incomplete and inadequate. Disclosure requests provide inexpensive, basic discovery without the delay relating to objections or work-product assertions. This article discusses (1) the differences between disclosure requests under the federal and Texas discovery rules, (2) the procedure for making disclosure requests under Texas Rule 194, (3) the contents of such requests, (4) proper responses to such requests, and (5) the proper use of responses to such requests. Because complete and full responses to Texas Rule 194 disclosure requests can greatly lessen the cost and delay inherent in civil litigation and foster the cooperation often absent from it generally and discovery specifically, it is imperative that Texas practitioners understand what information and documents must be disclosed and make such disclosures fully and completely

Complex wargames are difficult to design and execute. As such, computer-based modeling and simulation can aid the wargame development, ensuring smooth execution. In particular, computer-based modeling and simulation can develop and validate the processes, determine initial conditions, evaluate the rules, and aid in validation. In turn, the wargame can provide useful data that can be fed into detailed models that can provide quantitative analysis to decision-makers

    Deactivation of electrically supersaturated Te-doped InGaAs grown by MOCVD

    Achieving and sustaining the highest doping level possible in InGaAs is critical for the reduction of contact resistance in future microelectronic applications. Tellurium (Te) is a very promising n-type dopant with high reported n-type doping densities. However, the stability of this dopant during post-growth thermal processing is unknown. Supersaturated Te-doped InGaAs layers were grown by MOCVD at 500 °C. The electrically active concentration of Te doping was 4.4 × 1019 cm−3 as grown. The thermal stability of the Te was investigated by studying the effect of post-growth annealing between 550 and 700 °C on the electrical activation. At all temperatures, the electrical activation decreased from its starting electron concentration of 4.4 × 1019 cm−3 down to 6–7 × 1018 cm−3. The rate of deactivation was measured at each temperature, and the activation energy for the deactivation process was determined to be 2.6 eV. The deactivation could be caused by either Te–Te clustering or a Te-point defect reaction. HAADF-STEM images showed no visible clustering or precipitation after deactivation. Based on previous ab initio calculations that suggest the VIII population increases as the Fermi level moves toward the conduction band, it is proposed that formation of isolated point defect complexes, possibly a Te–VIII complex, is associated with the deactivation process

    Overuse of non-prescription analgesics by dental clinic patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Many patients present to dental clinics for treatment of painful conditions. Prior to seeking treatment, many of these patients will self-medicate with non-prescription analgesics (NPA), and some will unintentionally overdose on these products. The objective of this study is to describe the use of NPA among dental patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All adult patients presenting to an urban dental clinic during a two-week period in January and February of 2001 were approached to participate in this research project. Trained research assistants using a standardized questionnaire interviewed patients. Patient demographics and the NPA usage over the 3 days preceding the office visit were recorded. We defined a supra-therapeutic dose as any dose greater than the total recommended daily dose stated on package labeling.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We approached 194 patients and 127 participated. The mean age of participants was 35.5 years, 52% were male. Analgesic use preceding the visit was reported by 99 of 127 patients, and most (81/99) used a NPA exclusively. Fifty-four percent of NPA users were taking more than one NPA. NPA users reported using ibuprofen (37%), acetaminophen (27%), acetaminophen/aspirin combination product (8%), naproxen (8%), and aspirin (4%). Sixteen patients reported supra-therapeutic use of one or more NPA (some ingested multiple products): ibuprofen (14), acetaminophen (3), and naproxen (5).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>NPA use was common in patients presenting to a dental clinic. A significant minority of patients reported excessive dosing of NPA. Ibuprofen was the most frequently misused product, followed by naproxen and acetaminophen. Though mostly aware of the potential toxicity of NPA, many patients used supra-therapeutic dosages.</p
