    My purpose for attending graduate school was to increase my growth both as an artist and as an individual. Before coming to R.I.T. I had seven years of ceramics experience and I understood how a new environment and interaction with new people would assist my personal development. Moreover, the Master of Fine Arts degree would strengthen the quality of my work and provide me with the credentials needed to instruct at the university level. Considering the potential options an M.F.A. degree would give me, production pottery lost its appeal. I applied to graduate schools and was accepted at R.I.T. . After some experimentation in the first year of graduate studies, I selected the plate form for my thesis project. My intent was to explore decoration on the plate\u27s surface as a means of altering visual perceptions through painting, relief, and graphic design. I wanted to create tension and depth by the layering of geometric designs on an organic, textural background. The Raku firing process was selected to help integrate the design elements through glase crackling which produces color modulation and enhances surface characteristics

    Shira Goodman is the Executive Director of CeaseFirePA, a statewide organization to take a stand against gun violence. She has extensive experience in the nonprofit world and joined the organization following ten years as a public policy advocate working for better courts in Pennsylvania and a career in labor law. She is involved in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations, and serves on the board of the Legal Intelligencer and several community nonprofits. Thomas Farley is Commissioner of Health for the City of Philadelphia. From 2009 to 2014, Dr. Farley was Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. As Health Commissioner, Dr. Farley advocated for innovative public health policies, including making the city’s parks and beaches smoke-free, prohibiting price discounting of cigarettes, raising the legal sales age of tobacco to 21, capping the portion size of sugary drinks sold in restaurants at 16 ounces, and restricting the burning of air-polluting dirty fuels to heat buildings. He is coauthor of Prescription for a Healthy Nation (Beacon Press) with RAND Senior Scientist Deborah Cohen, and author of Saving Gotham: A billionaire mayor, activist doctors, and the fight for 8 million lives (W.W.     A rational interpolation method to compute frequency response

    A rational interpolation method for approximating a frequency response is presented. The method is based on a product formulation of finite differences, thereby avoiding the numerical problems incurred by near-equal-valued subtraction. Also, resonant pole and zero cancellation schemes are developed that increase the accuracy and efficiency of the interpolation method. Selection techniques of interpolation points are also discussed

    Some Observations of Short-eared Owl, Asio flammeus, Ecology on Arctic Tundra, Yukon, Canada

    We investigated nesting behavior, food habits, and interspecific interactions of Short-eared Owls (Asio flammeus) within an arctic tundra raptor community on Herschel Island and Komakuk Beach, northern Yukon, Canada. Short-eared Owls were the least common nesting raptor. We found only three nests, all on Herschel Island. All nests were on relatively elevated sites with fairly substantial vegetative cover. All nests failed in the egg stage, from a combination of human disturbance and possible predation by Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus) or Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). Short-eared Owls nested only in years when small rodent densities were at least 4 to 5 individuals per hectare in the spring. Short-eared Owls ate Northern Collared Lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus), Brown Lemmings (Lemmus trimucronatus), and Tundra Voles (Microtus oeconomus) almost exclusively, without clear selectivity. Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) killed two adult Short-eared Owls. In northern Yukon, the Short-eared Owl remains an uncommon summer resident and uses the region as a migration route. Spring rodent densities and interspecific predation are prominent limiting factors, and human disturbance also limits nesting success. We recommend restricting access to most tundra areas during periods when the birds are mating, initiating nesting, and incubating eggs. We recommend that human infrastructure be designed so that it cannot support novel nesting (and therefore local range expansion) by other nesting raptors that compete with and prey on Short-earned Owls
