A systematic experimental neuropsychological investigation of the functional integrity of working memory circuits in major depression
Verbal and visuospatial working memory (WM) impairment is a well-documented finding in psychiatric patients suffering from major psychoses such as schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder. However, in major depression (MDD) the literature on the presence and the extent of WM deficits is inconsistent. The use of a multitude of different WM tasks most of which lack process-specificity may have contributed to these inconsistencies. Eighteen MDD patients and 18 healthy controls matched with regard to age, gender and education were tested using process- and circuit-specific WM tasks for which clear brain-behaviour relationships had been established in prior functional neuroimaging studies. Patients suffering from acute MDD showed a selective impairment in articulatory rehearsal of verbal information in working memory. By contrast, visuospatial WM was unimpaired in this sample. There were no significant correlations between symptom severity and WM performance. These data indicate a dysfunction of a specific verbal WM system in acutely ill patients with MDD. As the observed functional deficit did not correlate with different symptom scores, further, longitudinal studies are required to clarify whether and how this deficit is related to illness acuity and clinical state of MDD patients

Stakeholder Perceptions of a Hybrid Competency-Based Education Program in Dietetics
As requirements for entry-level dietitians advance to the master’s degree level, the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics has published a Future Education Model (FEM). At present, FEM utilizes Competency-Based Education (CBE) for optional program implementation at early adopter demonstration sites. A limited number of CBE programs exist within the field of dietetics, and there is little published literature on its use in this arena. The present study leverages focus groups with students and interviews with faculty and preceptors to evaluate use of a novel CBE program in dietetics and explore factors that facilitate or hinder implementation of such program. A series of focus groups (n=5) were conducted with FEM-engaged students over the course of the 2021-2022 academic year. Faculty (n=9) and preceptors (n=8) involved with training students in a FEM program were invited to participate in in-depth interviews to complement the student perception. Qualitative data collection was conducted and recorded with videotelephony software, and transcribed verbatim prior to analysis. Semi-structured focus group and interview guides and template analysis were used for data collection and analysis. Coding was conducted independently and compared by two trained reviewers. Facilitators of implementing a CBE program in dietetics included prior educational and work experience, support of coworkers, advancement of the profession, and efficient programmatic structure. Barriers included a lack of preceptor training, difficulty assessing competence, and the resource intensiveness of the program. CBE programs in dietetics should consider extra administrative resources, training of preceptors, and a programmatic-level assessment plan when implementing such programs
Methodology of a multispecialty outpatient Obesity Treatment Research Program
Despite the large number of U.S. adults who overweight or obese, few providers have ready access to comprehensive lifestyle interventions, the cornerstone of medical obesity management. Our goal was to establish a research infrastructure embedded in a comprehensive lifestyle intervention treatment for obesity. The Obesity Treatment Research Program (OTRP) is a multi-specialty project at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota designed to provide a high intensity, year-long, comprehensive lifestyle obesity treatment. The program includes a nutritional intervention designed to reduce energy intake, a physical activity program and a cognitive behavioral approach to increase the likelihood of long-term adherence. The behavioral intervention template incorporated the Diabetes Prevention Program and the Look AHEAD trial materials. The OTRP is consistent with national recommendations for the management of overweight and obesity in adults, but with embedded features designed to identify patient characteristics that might help predict outcomes, assure long-term follow up and support various research initiatives. Our goal was to develop approaches to understand whether there are patient characteristics that predict treatment outcomes.
