The foreign aid system today is broken. Developing countries should seek to experiment with new strategies to alleviate poverty. This thesis focuses specifically on the development of Tanzania as an example for East Africa. The population in East Africa is growing at an alarming rate, yet most live on less than $1.10 a day. How can African countries prepare for such a rapid increase in population growth? How can a country with such high poverty levels take on such high growth and spread its benefits across the entire population? Traditional aid systems with a top-down approach will not solve the problems that the country faces today. This thesis will examine development in Tanzania throughout the past fifty years, and consider impact investment as one potential solution to self-sustainable growth. By combining philanthropic foresight with venture capital models, investors are able to generate significant social impact alongside financial return

Examining Psychological Outcomes Associated with Genetic Testing for Primary Arrhythmic Disorders in Adult Patients

The psychological impact of genetic testing for an inherited arrhythmia and its influence on future well-being is highly variable and has not been well studied. Thirty-seven participants completed a survey which included questions from the Multidimensional Impact of Cancer Risk Assessment (MICRA) questionnaire, Impact of Events Scale (IES) and Satisfaction with Decision Scale (SWDS) to provide more information on their genetic testing experience and to allow the authors to search for trends that may improve the genetic counseling experience moving forward. Trends were seen upon the comparison of those who had positive versus negative genetic testing results. Those with positive test results seemed to have higher stress scores and experienced a greater psychological impact. While more investigation is needed, this study serves as a good starting point to understanding the experience of genetic testing for these individuals

Community Guide) promises to be a substantial and necessary tool in collective efforts to improve the public health. This supplement to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) is important, not only for its content, but for the example provided of this approach in practice and policymaking. Painstaking and meticulous methodology yielded extensive reviews of evidence relevant to the reduction of injuries to motor vehicle occupants by increasing child safety seat use, increasing safety belt use, and reducing alcohol-impaired driving. The evidence is then weighed, with a specified protocol, to determine if recommendations can be formulated. 1–3 Akin to the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, initially issued in 1989 by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and aimed at prevention for the individual patient, this new guide steers an evidence-based course through the broader ocean of population-based prevention. 4,5 Although great progress has been made, as this supplement demonstrates, the future holds significant challenges for this undertaking
