Enabling III-V-based optoelectronics with low-cost dynamic hydride vapor phase epitaxy
Silicon is the dominant semiconductor in many semiconductor device
applications for a variety of reasons, including both performance and cost.
III-V materials have improved performance compared to silicon, but currently
they are relegated to applications in high-value or niche markets due to the
absence of a low-cost, high-quality production technique. Here we present an
advance in III-V materials synthesis using hydride vapor phase epitaxy that has
the potential to lower III-V semiconductor deposition costs by orders of
magnitude while maintaining the requisite optoelectronic material quality that
enables III-V-based technologies to outperform Si. We demonstrate the impacts
of this advance by addressing the use of III-Vs in terrestrial photovoltaics, a
highly cost-constrained market. The emergence of a low-cost III-V deposition
technique will enable III-V electronic and opto-electronic devices, with all
the benefits that they bring, to permeate throughout modern society.Comment: pre-prin
Calculation of Resistive Loads for Elastic Resistive Exercises
Context:
What is the correct resistive load to start resistive training with elastic resistance to gain strength? This question is typically answered by the clinician\u27s best estimate and patient\u27s level of discomfort without objective evidence.
Objective:
To determine the average level of resistance to initiate a strengthening routine with elastic resistance following isometric strength testing.
Design:
Cohort.
Setting:
Clinical.
Participants:
Thirty-four subjects (31±13yrs, 73±17kg, 170±12cm).
Interventions:
The force produced was measured in Newtons (N) with an isometric dynamometer. The force distance was the distance from center of joint to location of force applied was measured in meters to calculate torque that was called Test Torque for the purposes of this report. This torque data was converted to Exercise Load in pounds based on the location where the resistance was applied, specifically the distance away from the center of rotation of the exercising limb. The average amount of exercise load as percentage of initial Test Torque for each individual for each exercise was recorded to determine what the average level of resistance that could be used for elastic resistance strengthening program.
Main Outcome Measures:
The percentage of initial test torque calculated for the exercise was recorded for each exercise and torque produced was normalized to body weight.
Results:
The average percentage of maximal isometric force that was used to initiate exercises was 30 ± 7% of test torque.
Conclusions:
This provides clinicians with an objective target load to start elastic resistance training. Individual variations will occur but utilization of a load cell during elastic resistance provides objective documentation of exercise progression
Revealing the Young Starburst in Haro 3 with Radio and Infrared Imaging
The Wolf-Rayet galaxy Haro 3 (Mrk 35, NGC 3353) was observed at the near-IR
and radio wavelengths as part of ongoing program to study the earliest stages
of starbursts. These observations confirm that the current episode of star
formation is dominated by a single region (region A). While there are knots of
recent (~10 Myr) star formation outside of region A, the sources of ionizing
radiation as observed in both radio and Br-gamma observations are almost
exclusively associated with region A. The derived ionizing flux implies a star
formation rate of ~0.6 solar masses per year localized within a radius of ~0.1
kpc. A comparison with observations from HST indicates that one or more of the
star clusters in region A are optically obscured. The star clusters in region A
have ages at least as young as ~5 Myr, and possibly as young as ~0.1 Myr. The
star cluster that appears to be the youngest also exhibits a near-IR excess in
its colors, possibly indicating natal dust in very close proximity to the
ionizing stars. The difference between optical- and radio-determined ionizing
fluxes as well as the near-IR colors indicate an average extinction value of
A_V ~2.5 in region A. The total stellar mass associated with the current
starburst in region A is inferred from both the near-IR and radio observations
to be ~10^6 solar masses. The other main stellar concentrations observed in the
near-IR (Regions B1 and B2) are somewhat older than region A, with ages ~8-10
Myr, and the near-IR observations indicate they have stellar masses of ~8x10^4
and ~2x10^4 solar masses, respectively.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, to appear in AJ August 200
Direct measurement of B(D_s^+ → φX^+)
The absolute inclusive branching fraction of D_s^+→φX^+ has been measured from data collected by the BES detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.3 pb^(-1). At this energy, direct pair production e^+e^-→D_s^+D_s^- has been observed. We have selected D_s candidate events by reconstructing five hadronic decay modes D_s^+→φπ^+, K^(0*)K^+, K^0K^+, f0^(π+) and K^0K^-π^+π^+ and have searched for inclusive φ’s in the recoiling D_s^-. We observed three recoiling φ’s in the 166.4 ± 31.8 D_s candidate events, which leads to the absolute branching fraction B(D_s^+→φX^+)=(17.8(-7.2 -6.3)^(+15.1+0.6)) % and B(D_s-6.3+→φπ-6.3+)=(3.6_(-1.6 -1.3)(^_3.1+0.4) %. Recovery and serious mental illness: a review of current clinical and research paradigms and future directions
Introduction: Recovery from serious mental illness has historically not been considered a likely or even possible outcome. However, a range of evidence suggests the courses of SMI are heterogeneous with recovery being the most likely outcome. One barrier to studying recovery in SMI is that recovery has been operationalized in divergent and seemingly incompatible ways, as an objective outcome, versus a subjective process.
Areas Covered: This paper offers a review of recovery as a subjective process and recovery as an objective outcome; contrasts methodologies utilized by each approach to assess recovery; reports rates and correlates of recovery; and explores the relationship between objective and subjective forms of recovery.
Expert Commentary: There are two commonalities of approaching recovery as a subjective process and an objective outcome: (i) the need to make meaning out of one’s experiences to engage in either type of recovery and (ii) there exist many threats to engaging in meaning making that may impact the likelihood of moving toward recovery. We offer four clinical implications that stem from these two commonalities within a divided approach to the concept of recovery from SMI

Re-examining the U.K.'s greatest tornado outbreak: forecasting the limited extent of tornadoes along a cold front
On 23 November 1981, a strong cold front swept across the U.K., producing tornadoes from the west to the east coasts. An extensive campaign to collect tornado reports by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) resulted in 104 reports, the largest U.K. outbreak. The front was simulated with a convection-permitting numerical model down to 200-m horizontal grid spacing to better understand its evolution and meteorological environment. The event was typical of tornadoes in the U.K., with convective available potential energy (CAPE) less than 150 J kg-1, 0-1-km wind shear of 10-20 m s-1, and a narrow cold-frontal rainband forming precipitation cores and gaps. A line of cyclonic absolute vorticity existed along the front, with maxima as large as 0.04 s-1. Some hook-shaped misovortices bore kinematic similarity to supercells. The narrow swath along which the line was tornadic was bounded on the equatorward side by weak vorticity along the line and on the poleward side by zero CAPE, enclosing a region where the environment was otherwise favorable for tornadogenesis. To determine if the 104 tornado reports were plausible, first possible duplicate reports were eliminated, resulting in as few as 58 tornadoes to as many as 90. Second, the number of possible parent misovortices that may have spawned tornadoes is estimated from model output. The number of plausible tornado reports in the 200-m grid-spacing domain was 22 and as many as 44, whereas the model simulation was used to estimate 30 possible parent misovortices within this domain. These results suggest that 90 reports was plausible
Measurement of the mass of the Ï„ lepton
The mass of the τ lepton has been measured at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider using the Beijing Spectrometer. A search near threshold for e^+e^-→τ^+τ^- was performed. Candidate events were identified by requiring that one τ decay via τ→eνν¯, and the other via τ→μνν¯. The mass value, obtained from a fit to the energy dependence of the τ^+τ^- cross section, is m_τ=1776.9_(-0.5)^(+0.4)±0.2 MeV
