Can You Use it in a Sentence? Defining Talent Management
Key Findings The term talent management has escaped a standard definition, and nearly every article written on the topic conclude that the concept of talent management is lacking in terms of definition and theoretical development and there is a comparative lack of empirical evidence on the topic. Perhaps the most salient criticism from researchers is that the use of the term talent management is often little more than a rebranding of a range of typical HR activities. A notable feature of much of the existing literature on talent management is that it continues to focus on practices associated with lifetime careers in corporations, despite the fact that the most profound shift over the past 30-plus years in how organizations manage their workforces has been an increase in dismissals and external hiring at all organizational levels. A definition that is consistent with traditional approaches and captures what academic researchers have been doing under the heading of talent management is as follows: the process through which organizations anticipate and meet their needs for talent in strategic jobs
Exponential asymptotics and Stokes lines in a partial differential equation
A singularly perturbed linear partial differential equation motivated by the geometrical model for crystal growth is considered. A steepest descent analysis of the Fourier transform solution identifies asymptotic contributions from saddle points, end points and poles, and the Stokes lines across which these may be switched on and off. These results are then derived directly from the equation by optimally truncating the naĂŻve perturbation expansion and smoothing the Stokes discontinuities. The analysis reveals two new types of Stokes switching: a higher-order Stokes line which is a Stokes line in the approximation of the late terms of the asymptotic series, and which switches on or off Stokes lines themselves; and a second-generation Stokes line, in which a subdominant exponential switched on at a primary Stokes line is itself responsible for switching on another smaller exponential. The ânewâ Stokes lines discussed by Berk et al. (Berk et al. 1982 J. Math. Phys.23, 988â1002) are second-generation Stokes lines, while the âvanishingâ Stokes lines discussed by Aoki et al. CYP-13A12 of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a PUFA-epoxygenase involved in behavioural response to reoxygenation
A specific behavioural response of Caenorhabditis elegans, the rapid increase of locomotion in response to anoxia/reoxygenation called the O2-ON response, has been used to model key aspects of ischaemia/reperfusion injury. A genetic suppressor screen demonstrated a direct causal role of CYP (cytochrome P450)-13A12Â in this response and suggested that CYP-eicosanoids, which in mammals influence the contractility of cardiomyocytes and vascular smooth muscle cells, might function in C. elegans as specific regulators of the body muscle cell activity. In the present study we show that co-expression of CYP-13A12 with the NADPH-CYP-reductase EMB-8Â in insect cells resulted in the reconstitution of an active microsomal mono-oxygenase system that metabolized EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and also AA (arachidonic acid) to specific sets of regioisomeric epoxy and hydroxy derivatives. The main products included 17,18-EEQ (17,18-epoxyeicosatetraenoic acid) from EPA and 14,15-EET (14,15-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid) from AA. Locomotion assays showed that the defective O2-ON response of C20-PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid)-deficient, Î-12 and Î-6 fatty acid desaturase mutants (fat-2 and fat-3 respectively) can be restored by feeding the nematodes AA or EPA, but not ETYA (eicosatetraynoic acid), a non-metabolizable AA analogue. Short-term incubation with 17,18-EEQ was sufficient to rescue the impaired locomotion of the fat-3 strain. The endogenous level of free 17,18-EEQ declined during anoxia and was rapidly restored in response to reoxygenation. On the basis of these results, we suggest that CYP-dependent eicosanoids such as 17,18-EEQ function as signalling molecules in the regulation of the O2-ON response in C. elegans. Remarkably, the exogenously administered 17,18-EEQ increased the locomotion activity under normoxic conditions and was effective not only with C20-PUFA-deficient mutants, but to a lesser extent also with wild-type worms
Bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in doped manganites
We report precise measurements and quantitative data analysis on the
low-temperature resistivity of several ferromagnetic manganite films. We
clearly show that there exists a T^{4.5} term in low-temperature resistivity,
and that this term is in quantitative agreement with the quantum theory of
two-magnon scattering for half metallic ferromagnets. Our present results
provide the first bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in

Influence of shear flow on vesicles near a wall: a numerical study
We describe the dynamics of three-dimensional fluid vesicles in steady shear
flow in the vicinity of a wall. This is analyzed numerically at low Reynolds
numbers using a boundary element method. The area-incompressible vesicle
exhibits bending elasticity. Forces due to adhesion or gravity oppose the
hydrodynamic lift force driving the vesicle away from a wall. We investigate
three cases. First, a neutrally buoyant vesicle is placed in the vicinity of a
wall which acts only as a geometrical constraint. We find that the lift
velocity is linearly proportional to shear rate and decreases with increasing
distance between the vesicle and the wall. Second, with a vesicle filled with a
denser fluid, we find a stationary hovering state. We present an estimate of
the viscous lift force which seems to agree with recent experiments of Lorz et
al. [Europhys. Lett., vol. 51, 468 (2000)]. Third, if the wall exerts an
additional adhesive force, we investigate the dynamical unbinding transition

Measurement of coherent charge transfer in an adiabatic Cooper pair pump
We study adiabatic charge transfer in a superconducting Cooper pair pump,
focusing on the influence of current measurement on coherence. We investigate
the limit where the Josephson coupling energy between the various parts
of the system is small compared to the Coulomb charging energy . In this
case the charge transferred in a pumping cycle , the charge of one
Cooper pair: the main contribution is due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling.
We are particularly interested in the quantum correction to , which is due
to coherent tunneling of pairs across the pump and which depends on the
superconducting phase difference between the electrodes: . A measurement of tends to destroy the phase
coherence. We first study an arbitrary measuring circuit and then specific
examples and show that coherent Cooper pair transfer can in principle be
detected using an inductively shunted ammeter
Effective swimming strategies in low Reynolds number flows
The optimal strategy for a microscopic swimmer to migrate across a linear
shear flow is discussed. The two cases, in which the swimmer is located at
large distance, and in the proximity of a solid wall, are taken into account.
It is shown that migration can be achieved by means of a combination of sailing
through the flow and swimming, where the swimming strokes are induced by the
external flow without need of internal energy sources or external drives. The
structural dynamics required for the swimmer to move in the desired direction
is discussed and two simple models, based respectively on the presence of an
elastic structure, and on an orientation dependent friction, to control the
deformations induced by the external flow, are analyzed. In all cases, the
deformation sequence is a generalization of the tank-treading motion regimes
observed in vesicles in shear flows. Analytic expressions for the migration
velocity as a function of the deformation pattern and amplitude are provided.
The effects of thermal fluctuations on propulsion have been discussed and the
possibility that noise be exploited to overcome the limitations imposed on the

On the recurrence and robust properties of Lorenz'63 model
Lie-Poisson structure of the Lorenz'63 system gives a physical insight on its
dynamical and statistical behavior considering the evolution of the associated
Casimir functions. We study the invariant density and other recurrence features
of a Markov expanding Lorenz-like map of the interval arising in the analysis
of the predictability of the extreme values reached by particular physical
observables evolving in time under the Lorenz'63 dynamics with the classical
set of parameters. Moreover, we prove the statistical stability of such an
invariant measure. This will allow us to further characterize the SRB measure

Amine Containing Analogs of Sulindac for Cancer Prevention
Background:
Sulindac belongs to the chemically diverse family of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) that effectively prevent adenomatous colorectal polyps and colon cancer, especially in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis. Sulindac sulfide amide (SSA), an amide analog of sulindac sulfide, shows insignificant COX-related activity and toxicity while enhancing anticancer activity in vitro and demonstrating in vivo xenograft activity.
Objective:
Develop structure-activity relationships in the sulindac amine series and identify analogs with promising anticancer activities.
Method:
A series of sulindac amine analogs were designed and synthesized and then further modified in a âlibraries from librariesâ approach to produce amide, sulfonamide and N,N-disubstituted sulindac amine sub-libraries. All analogs were screened against three cancer cell lines (prostate, colon and breast).
Results:
Several active compounds were identified viain vitro cancer cell line screening with the most potent compound (26) in the nanomolar range.
Conclusion:
Compound 26 and analogs showing the most potent inhibitory activity may be considered for further design and optimization efforts as anticancer hit scaffolds
