    KNEE JOINT KINEMATICS OF SUPPORT LEG DURING MAXIMAL INSTEP KICKING IN FEMALE SOCCER PLAYERS

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of knee motion of support leg during maximal instep kicking on female soccer players. Their kicking motions were recorded by a motion capture system. The range of motion of knee angle (knee variation) was caluculated. There were significant negative relationships of foot velocity with knee variation (r =0.73, p \u3c 0.05). The participants were divided into small (n = 8) and large (n = 8) variation groups based on their change amount of support leg knee angle during forward swing. Foot velocity, vertical hip velocity of kicking leg, and vertical centre of pelvis displacement during forward swing phase of small knee variation group than those of large variation group were found significant differences (p \u3c 0.05). These results suggested that training for female players should focus on reducing knee angular displacement (flexion) of support leg during forward swing phase in instep kicking

    Footedness for scratching itchy eyes in rodents

    The neural bases of itchy eye transmission remain unclear compared with those involved in body itch. Here, we show in rodents that the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) of the trigeminal sensory system is involved in the transmission of itchy eyes. Interestingly, we further demonstrate a difference in scratching behaviour between the left and right hindfeet in rodents; histamine instillation into the conjunctival sac of both eyes revealed right-foot biased laterality in the scratching movements. Unilateral histamine instillation specifically induced neural activation in the ipsilateral sensory pathway, with no significant difference between the activations following left- and right-eye instillations. Thus, the behavioural laterality is presumably due to right-foot preference in rodents. Genetically modified rats with specific depletion of Grpr-expressing neurons in the trigeminal sensory nucleus caudalis of the medulla oblongata exhibited fewer and shorter histamine-induced scratching movements than controls and eliminated the footedness. These results taken together indicate that the Grp-expressing neurons are required for the transmission of itch sensation from the eyes, but that foot preference is generated centrally. These findings could open up a new field of research on the mechanisms of the laterality in vertebrates and also offer new potential therapeutic approaches to refractory pruritic eye disorders

    A Methodology of Estimation on Air Pollution and Its Health Effects in Large Japanese Cities

    The correlation between air pollution and health effects in large Japanese cities presents a great challenge owing to the limited availability of data on the exposure to pollution, health effects and the uncertainty of mixed causes. A methodology for quantitative relationships (between the emission volume and air quality, and the air quality and health effects) is analysed with a statistical method in this article; the correlation of air pollution reduction policy in Japan from 1974 to 2007. This chapter discusses a step-by-step methodology of determining the direct correlation between emission volumes, air quality, and health effects. The relationship between total emissions (NOx, PM) (from both stationary and mobile sources) and air quality (NO2, TSP) was found to be significant. The correlation analysis of emission volume, and air quality suggests that NOx and PM levels worsen according to increases in NO2. When the correlation between the air pollutant and the type of health effect (certified, mortality, recovery, and newly registered) was examined according to the certified area, an inverse relationship was observed. The relationship between air quality (NO2) and health effect was found to be significant. When NO2 worsens, certified patients, mortality rates and newly certified patients increase, according to the data from 1989 to 2007 with dummy variable analysis

    Changes in the attitudes of participants in a preceptor training seminar

    Purpose : To clarify changes in the attitudes of participants in a preceptor training seminar and to abstract a model for training preceptors. Methods : The subjects of the study were the 72 participants in a seminar conducted in “A” Prefecture. Six sets of data obtained from the participants before, during and after the seminar were used. Qualitative research methods were used to process these data. Result : 1.From among the “practicum problems” of pre-seminar reports, four categories were extracted :(1)students’ problems,(2)problems about giving guidance,(3)preceptors’ problems and (4)problems with the teaching system. 2.As for “what the participants expected of students,” three categories were identified : (1)students’ attitudes during the practicum, (2)way of learning and (3)results of learning. 3.We compared “what the participants expected of students during the practicum” before and after the seminar. As for “students’ attitudes during the practicum,” 85% of the participants expected better students’ attitudes before the seminar, while 28% had this expectation after the seminar. Conclusion : The participants` attitudes had clearly changed. These data were analyzed from two viewpoints : “participants’ psychological distance from students” and “participants’ self-efficacy.” These two factors were found to be closely related, and one model was abstracted

    The gastrin-releasing peptide/bombesin system revisited by a reverse-evolutionary study considering Xenopus

    Bombesin is a putative antibacterial peptide isolated from the skin of the frog, Bombina bombina. Two related (bombesin-like) peptides, gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and neuromedin B (NMB) have been found in mammals. The history of GRP/bombesin discovery has caused little attention to be paid to the evolutionary relationship of GRP/bombesin and their receptors in vertebrates. We have classified the peptides and their receptors from the phylogenetic viewpoint using a newly established genetic database and bioinformatics. Here we show, by using a clawed frog (Xenopus tropicalis), that GRP is not a mammalian counterpart of bombesin and also that, whereas the GRP system is widely conserved among vertebrates, the NMB/bombesin system has diversified in certain lineages, in particular in frog species. To understand the derivation of GRP system in the ancestor of mammals, we have focused on the GRP system in Xenopus. Gene expression analyses combined with immunohistochemistry and Western blotting experiments demonstrated that GRP peptides and their receptors are distributed in the brain and stomach of Xenopus. We conclude that GRP peptides and their receptors have evolved from ancestral (GRP-like peptide) homologues to play multiple roles in both the gut and the brain as one of the 'gut-brain peptide' systems

    Shedding light on the base-pair opening dynamics of nucleic acids in living human cells

However, studying the base-pair opening dynamics inside living cells has remained challenging. Here, to determine the base-pair opening kinetics inside living human cells, the exchange rate constant (kex) of the imino proton with the proton of solvent water involved in hairpin and G-quadruplex (GQ) structures is determined by the in-cell NMR technique. It is deduced on determination of kex values that at least some G-C base pairs of the hairpin structure and all G-G base-pairs of the GQ structure open more frequently in living human cells than in vitro. It is suggested that interactions with endogenous proteins could be responsible for the increase in frequency of base-pair opening. Our studies demonstrate a difference in dynamics of nucleic acids between in-cell and in vitro conditions

    The Amphibious Mudskipper: A Unique Model Bridging the Gap of Central Actions of Osmoregulatory Hormones Between Terrestrial and Aquatic Vertebrates

    Body fluid regulation, or osmoregulation, continues to be a major topic in comparative physiology, and teleost fishes have been the subject of intensive research. Great progress has been made in understanding the osmoregulatory mechanisms including drinking behavior in teleosts and mammals. Mudskipper gobies can bridge the gap from aquatic to terrestrial habitats by their amphibious behavior, but the studies are yet emerging. In this review, we introduce this unique teleost as a model to study osmoregulatory behaviors, particularly amphibious behaviors regulated by the central action of hormones. Regarding drinking behavior of mammals, a thirst sensation is aroused by angiotensin II (Ang II) through direct actions on the forebrain circumventricular structures, which predominantly motivates them to search for water and take it into the mouth for drinking. By contrast, aquatic teleosts can drink water that is constantly present in their mouth only by reflex swallowing, and Ang II induces swallowing by acting on the hindbrain circumventricular organ without inducing thirst. In mudskippers, however, through the loss of buccal water by swallowing, which appears to induce buccal drying on land, Ang II motivates these fishes to move to water for drinking. Thus, mudskippers revealed a unique thirst regulation by sensory detection in the buccal cavity. In addition, the neurohypophysial hormones, isotocin (IT) and vasotocin (VT), promote migration to water via IT receptors in mudskippers. VT is also dipsogenic and the neurons in the forebrain may mediate their thirst. VT regulates social behaviors as well as osmoregulation. The VT-induced migration appears to be a submissive response of subordinate mudskippers to escape from competitive and dehydrating land. Together with implications of VT in aggression, mudskippers may bridge the multiple functions of neurohypophysial hormones. Interestingly, cortisol, an important hormone for seawater adaptation and stress response in teleosts, also stimulates the migration toward water, mediated possibly via the mineralocorticoid receptor. The corticosteroid system that is responsive to external stressors can accelerate emergence of migration to alternative habitats. In this review, we suggest this unique teleost as an important model to deepen insights into the behavioral roles of these hormones in relation to osmoregulation

    Japanese anti-tobacco measures are reviewed and checked the relationship between the FCTC and its changes. Japan is making efforts to follow the FCTC, but it is insufficient and present anti-tobacco measures seem to have only a little impact on decreasing smoking rates. More effective measures should be developed for reducing smoking rates and for making smoke-free society

    Increased Plasma Levels of Platelet Factor 4 and β-thromboglobulin in Women with Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

    Thrombosis in decidual vessels is one of the mechanisms of pregnancy loss. However, few studies have assessed the relation between platelet activation, which is known to cause of thrombosis, and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). We investigated platelet activation in women with RPL compared to controls by measuring plasma levels of platelet factor 4 (PF4) and β-thromboglobulin (βTG), and assessed correlations between PF4/βTG and coagulative risk factors associated with RPL. The study group included 135 women who had experienced two or more consecutive pregnancy losses. The control group included 28 age-matched healthy women who had never experienced pregnancy loss. PF4 and βTG plasma levels were significantly higher in the women with RPL than controls (PF4: 14.0 [8.0-20.0] vs. 9.0 [6.0-12.0] ng/ml, p=0.043; βTG: 42.0 [24.3-59.8] vs. 31.5 [26.6-36.4] ng/ml, p=0.002). There was a significant association between βTG and anti-phosphatidylethanolamine antibody immunoglobulin M (aPE IgM) (p=0.048). Among the women with RPL, 18 of those who were positive for PF4 (45%) and 18 of those who were positive for βTG (37%) were negative for all known coagulative risk factors associated with RPL. Measurements of PF4 and βTG may be important because they help identify women who are at risk of RPL
