Phase Stability and Segregation in Alloy 22 Base Metal and Weldments
The current design of the waste disposal containers relies heavily on encasement in a multi-layered container, featuring a corrosion barrier of Alloy 22, a Ni-Cr-Mo-W based alloy with excellent corrosion resistance over a wide range of conditions. The fundamental concern from the perspective of the Yucca Mountain Project, however, is the inherent uncertainty in the (very) long-term stability of the base metal and welds. Should the properties of the selected materials change over the long service life of the waste packages, it is conceivable that the desired performance characteristics (such as corrosion reistance) will become compromised, leading to premature failure of the system. To address this, we will study the phase stability and solute segregation characteristics of Alloy 22 base metal and welds. A better understanding of the underlying microstructural evolution tendencies, and their connections with corrosion behavior will (in turn) produce a higher confidence in the extrapolated behavior of the container materials over time periods that are not feasibly tested in a laboratory. Additionally, the knowledge gained here may potentially lead to cost savings through development of safe and realistic design constraints and model assumptions throughout the entire disposal system
Kinks Dynamics in One-Dimensional Coupled Map Lattices
We examine the problem of the dynamics of interfaces in a one-dimensional
space-time discrete dynamical system. Two different regimes are studied : the
non-propagating and the propagating one. In the first case, after proving the
existence of such solutions, we show how they can be described using Taylor
expansions. The second situation deals with the assumption of a travelling wave
to follow the kink propagation. Then a comparison with the corresponding
continuous model is proposed. We find that these methods are useful in simple
dynamical situations but their application to complex dynamical behaviour is

Examination of a Peer-Led, Non-Diet Nutrition and Exercise Adherence Pilot Program on a College Campus: FitU
A non-equivalent control group design was utilized to investigate the effect of a non-diet, peer-led, tailored nutrition and exercise adherence intervention (FitU) on exercise stages of change, intuitive eating, and barriers to healthy eating and exercise in college females. Female students (n=17) who enrolled in the 8-10 week program served as the intervention group and general education students who did not receive an intervention served as the control group (n=16). Surveys were administered pre and post intervention over two consecutive semesters. Utilizing ANCOVA analyses, reported barriers to eating healthy decreased (p=.008) and one intuitive eating subscale, eating for physical rather than emotional reasons improved significantly (p=.01) in the intervention group compared to control from pre to post. Further, 65% of the intervention group reported an improvement in exercise stage of change and none relapsed compared with only 20% improvement and 40% relapse in the control group from pre to postintervention. The majority of the intervention participants also reported improved dietary (82.4%) and exercise (76.5%) patterns/thoughts. Peer-led and individually tailored, non-diet nutrition and exercise interventions may effectively promote healthy behaviors among college females
Isolation, purification, and full NMR assignments of cyclopamine from Veratrum californicum
The Hedgehog signaling pathway is essential for embryogenesis and for tissue homeostasis in the adult. However, it may induce malignancies in a number of tissues when constitutively activated, and it may also have a role in other forms of normal and maladaptive growth. Cyclopamine, a naturally occurring steroidal alkaloid, specifically inhibits the Hedgehog pathway by binding directly to Smoothened, an important Hedgehog response element. To use cyclopamine as a tool to explore and/or inhibit the Hedgehog pathway in vivo, a substantial quantity is required, and as a practical matter cyclopamine has been effectively unavailable for usage in animals larger than mice
Deformations of Lifshitz holography
The simplest gravity duals for quantum critical theories with z=2 `Lifshitz'
scale invariance admit a marginally relevant deformation. Generic black holes
in the bulk describe the field theory with a dynamically generated momentum
scale Lambda as well as finite temperature T. We describe the thermodynamics of
these black holes in the quantum critical regime where T >> Lambda^2. The
deformation changes the asymptotics of the spacetime mildly and leads to
intricate UV sensitivities of the theory which we control perturbatively in

Environmental Effects on Corrosion Properties of Alloy 22
During the regulatory life of the Yucca Mountain High Level Nuclear Waste (HLNW) repository the primary engineered barrier that is to prevent release of radioactive material into the environment is proposed to be a Corrosion-Resistant Material (CRM) outer shell covering the Waste Package (WP) container. The current selection for the CRM is Alloy 22 (UNS N06022), a Ni-Cr-Mo-W-Fe alloy. Alloy 22 forms a defective chromic oxide passive film which results in excellent corrosion resistance; the presence of molybdenum in Alloy 22 offers corrosion resistance in reducing environments as well as oxidizing environments
D-Branes and Fluxes in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics
Type 0A string theory in the (2,4k) superconformal minimal model backgrounds,
with background ZZ D-branes or R-R fluxes can be formulated non-perturbatively.
The branes and fluxes have a description as threshold bound states in an
associated one-dimensional quantum mechanics which has a supersymmetric
structure, familiar from studies of the generalized KdV system. The relevant
bound state wavefunctions in this problem have unusual asymptotics (they are
not normalizable in general, and break supersymmetry) which are consistent with
the underlying description in terms of open and closed string sectors. The
overall organization of the physics is very pleasing: The physics of the closed
strings in the background of branes or fluxes is captured by the generalized
KdV system and non-perturbative string equations obtained by reduction of that
system (the hierarchy of equations found by Dalley, Johnson, Morris and
Watterstam). Meanwhile, the bound states wavefunctions, which describe the
physics of the ZZ D-brane (or flux) background in interaction with probe FZZT
D-branes, are captured by the generalized mKdV system, and non-perturbative
string equations obtained by reduction of that system (the Painleve II hierachy
found by Periwal and Shevitz in this context).Comment: 41 pages, LaTe
SARS-CoV-2 testing in North Carolina: Racial, ethnic, and geographic disparities
SARS-CoV-2 testing data in North Carolina during the first three months of the state's COVID-19 pandemic were analyzed to determine if there were disparities among intersecting axes of identity including race, Latinx ethnicity, age, urban-rural residence, and residence in a medically underserved area. Demographic and residential data were used to reconstruct patterns of testing metrics (including tests per capita, positive tests per capita, and test positivity rate which is an indicator of sufficient testing) across race-ethnicity groups and urban-rural populations separately. Across the entire sample, 13.1% (38,750 of 295,642) of tests were positive. Within racial-ethnic groups, 11.5% of all tests were positive among non-Latinx (NL) Whites, 22.0% for NL Blacks, and 66.5% for people of Latinx ethnicity. The test positivity rate was higher among people living in rural areas across all racial-ethnic groups. These results suggest that in the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to COVID-19 testing in North Carolina was not evenly distributed across racial-ethnic groups, especially in Latinx, NL Black and other historically marginalized populations, and further disparities existed within these groups by gender, age, urban-rural status, and residence in a medically underserved area
