EXPANDING THE NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM TO COVER COASTAL EROSION DAMAGE
The National Flood Insurance Program does not currently cover damage strictly attributable to coastal erosion. This paper uses the results of a nationwide survey of coastal property owners to estimate the demand for such insurance. We find that there is significant demand at prices in the range of current flood insurance premiums. A hedonic price model suggests that flooding and erosion hazards, and the actions taken against them, are major determinants of property values in American coastal areas. AN ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF BEACH EROSION MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES
This paper examines the relative economic efficiency of three distinct beach erosion management policies — beach nourishment with shoreline armoring, beach nourishment without armoring, and shoreline retreat. The analysis focuses on (i) the recreational benefits of beaches, (ii) the property value effects of beach management, and (iii) the costs associated with the three management scenarios. Assuming the removal of shoreline armoring improves overall beach quality, beach nourishment with shoreline armoring is the least desirable of the three alternatives. The countervailing property losses under a retreat strategy are of the same order of magnitude as the foregone management costs when the beneficial effects of retreat — higher values of housing services for those houses not lost to erosion — are considered. Specific Yoga Practices and Mindful Eating Habits among New and Experienced Yoga Practitioners
Current research suggests that yoga practitioners are more mindful eaters, consume more fruits and vegetables and gain less weight over time when compared to individuals who do not practice yoga. This study aimed to determine the relationship between mindful eating habits and yoga practice in terms of how they are related to dietary quality. To determine the relationship between these factors, a 51-item survey was developed and distributed to a yoga studio in Syracuse, New York. The survey asked for information on typical yoga practices, mindful eating habits and dietary habits using a brief food frequency questionnaire. The responses from 88 individuals were included in data analysis.
Individuals with 10 or more years of yoga practice exhibited more mindful eating habits than individuals with a less established practice suggesting that yoga is an effective method for improving mindful eating habits. Mindful eating and length of yoga practice both seemed to be associated with higher dietary quality and a healthier BMI. Higher mindful eating scores were associated with higher consumption of fruit and vegetables. Similarly, individuals with more yoga experience consumed a greater amount of whole grains, fruits and a wider variety of vegetables, while consumption of processed food was lower, indicating a higher quality diet. Results suggest that yoga practice may be useful in improving mindful eating habits and dietary quality
Groundwater Flow and Thermal Modeling to Support a Preferred Conceptual Model for the Large Hydraulic Gradient North of Yucca Mountain
This task will create a two-dimensional, saturated zone, vertical cross-section model of groundwater flow and thermal transport through the large hydraulic gradient (LHG). This model is referenced herein as the thermal model. The scope of this study is limited to presenting a postulated hydrogeologic configuration of the LHG. The conceptualization will include the use of postulated hydrogeologic structures and material properties. The thermal model will be spatially limited to the area immediately upgradient and downgradient of the LHG and will not reproduce the many hydrogeologic features of the existing regional and site-scale models. The thermal model will be orientated north to south, approximately along a saturated zone streamline. The results of the thermal modeling will be compared to temperature data reported for site wells by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and in peer-reviewed journals. Most, if not all, of this reported data is non- qualified. This task will not qualify the reported data and the reported data will be used only as a basis of comparison for the model simulations
Phase Stability and Segregation in Alloy 22 Base Metal and Weldments
The current design of the waste disposal containers relies heavily on encasement in a multi-layered container, featuring a corrosion barrier of Alloy 22, a Ni-Cr-Mo-W based alloy with excellent corrosion resistance over a wide range of conditions. The fundamental concern from the perspective of the Yucca Mountain Project, however, is the inherent uncertainty in the (very) long-term stability of the base metal and welds. Should the properties of the selected materials change over the long service life of the waste packages, it is conceivable that the desired performance characteristics (such as corrosion reistance) will become compromised, leading to premature failure of the system. To address this, we will study the phase stability and solute segregation characteristics of Alloy 22 base metal and welds. A better understanding of the underlying microstructural evolution tendencies, and their connections with corrosion behavior will (in turn) produce a higher confidence in the extrapolated behavior of the container materials over time periods that are not feasibly tested in a laboratory. Additionally, the knowledge gained here may potentially lead to cost savings through development of safe and realistic design constraints and model assumptions throughout the entire disposal system

Parents’ Incomes and Children’s Outcomes: A Quasi-Experiment
Identifying the effect of parental incomes on child outcomes is difficult due to the correlation of unobserved ability, education levels and income. Previous research has relied on the use of instrumental variables to identify the effect of a change in household income on the young adult outcomes of the household’s children. In this research, we examine the role that an exogenous increase in household incomes due to a government transfer unrelated to household characteristics plays in the long run outcomes for children in affected households. We find that children who are in households affected by the cash transfer program have higher levels of education in their young adulthood and a lower incidence of criminality for minor offenses. These effects differ by initial household poverty status as is expected. Second, we explore two possible mechanisms through which this exogenous increase in household income affects the long run outcomes of children – parental time (quantity) and parental quality.
