A Molecular Line Observation toward Massive Clumps Associated with Infrared Dark Clouds

We have surveyed the N2H+ J=1-0, HC3N J=5-4, CCS J_N=4_3-3_2, NH3 (J, K) = (1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3), and CH3OH J=7-6 lines toward the 55 massive clumps associated with infrared dark clouds by using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescope and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment 10 m telescope. The N2H+, HC3N, and NH3 lines are detected toward most of the objects. On the other hand, the CCS emission is detected toward none of the objects. The [CCS]/[N2H+] ratios are found to be mostly lower than unity even in the Spitzer 24 micron dark objects. This suggests that most of the massive clumps are chemically more evolved than the low-mass starless cores. The CH3OH emission is detected toward 18 out of 55 objects. All the CH3OH-detected objects are associated with the Spitzer 24 micron sources, suggesting that star formation has already started in all the CH3OH-detected objects. The velocity widths of the CH3OH J_K=7_0-6_0 A+ and 7_{-1}-6_{-1} E lines are broader than those of N2H+ J=1-0. The CH3OH J_K=7_0-6_0 A+ and 7_{-1}-6_{-1} E lines tend to have broader linewidth in the MSX dark objects than in the others, the former being younger or less luminous than the latter. The origin of the broad emission is discussed in terms of the interaction between an outflow and an ambient cloud.Comment: Accepted to Ap

FUSION IMAGE AND IA ICG IN AVM SURGERY

Objective: An understanding of the complex morphology of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is important for successful resection. We have previously reported the utility of intra-arterial indocyanine green (ICG) videoangiography for this purpose, but that method cannot detect the angioarchitecture covered by brain tissue. 3-dimensional (3D) multimodal fusion imaging is reportedly useful for this same purpose, but cannot always visualize the exact angioarchitecture due to poor source images and processing techniques. This study examined the results of utilizing both techniques in patients with AVMs. Methods: Both techniques were applied in 12 patients with AVMs. Both images were compared with surgical views and evaluated by surgeons. Results: Although evaluations for identifying superficial feeders by ICG videoangiography were high in all cases, the more complicated the AVM, the lower the evaluation by 3D multimodal fusion imaging. Conversely, evaluation of the estimated range of the nidus was high in all cases by 3D multimodal fusion imaging, but low in all but one case by ICG videoangiography. Nidus flow reduction was recognized by Flow 800 analysis obtained after ICG videoangiography. Conclusions: These results showed that utilizing both techniques together was more useful than each modality alone in AVM surgery. This was particularly effective in identifying superficial feeders and estimating the range of the nidus. This technique is expected to offer an optimal tool for AVM surgery

Three-dimensional shapes and distributions of long-period stacking ordered structures in Mg₉₇Zn₁Gd₂ cast alloys characterized by electron tomography

Three-dimensional (3D) configurations of 14H long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structures formed in Mg97Zn1Gd2 cast alloys at intermediate stages of the formation process have been studied by single tilt-axis electron tomography using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. Lateral morphology of the 14H LPSO is clearly visualized by reconstructing 3D volumes. An existence of "dent-shaped" area was found in a 3D reconstructed volume for the first time. The edge of LPSO shows a characteristic triangular shape with an angle of 60°, which indicates that the growth front is parallel to {112¯0}Mg. It is suggested that in-plane irregular or characteristic shapes are related to the lateral growth mechanism of LPSO. Electron tomography has proven to be an indispensable tool to characterize in-plane structural information of LPSO formed in α-Mg matrix

Web-based System for Designing Game-based Evacuation Drills

A game-based evacuation drill (GBED) using the program Real-World Edutainment is effective disaster education. For the successful GBED, an evacuation scenario and digital materials are important. We are developing a web-based system to design GBEDs through community survey, digital material creation and evacuation scenario composition. This system works with a standard web browser and allows a wide range of people to participate in the GBED design process through simple operations

ASTE CO(3-2) Observations of the Barred Spiral Galaxy M 83: I. Correlation between CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) Ratios and Star Formation Efficiencies

We present CO(J=3-2) emission observations with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) toward the 5' x 5' (or 6.6 x 6.6 kpc at the distance D = 4.5 Mpc) region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M 83. We successfully resolved the major structures, i.e., the nuclear starburst region, bar, and inner spiral arms in CO(J=3-2) emission at a resolution of 22'' (or 480 pc), showing a good spatial coincidence between CO(J=3-2) and 6 cm continuum emissions. We found a global CO(J=3-2) luminosity L'_CO(3-2) of 5.1 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2 within the observed region. We also found L'_CO(3-2) in the disk region (0.5 < r < 3.5 kpc) of 4.2 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2, indicating that CO(J=3-2) emission in the disk region significantly contributes to the global L'_CO(3-2). From a comparison of a CO(J=3-2) data with CO(J=1-0) intensities measured with Nobeyama 45-m telescope, we found that the radial profile of CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) integrated intensity ratio R_3-2/1-0 is almost unity in the central region (r < 0.25 kpc), whereas it drops to a constant value, 0.6--0.7, in the disk region. The radial profile of star formation efficiencies (SFEs), determined from 6 cm radio continuum and CO(J=1-0) emission, shows the same trend as that of R_3-2/1-0. At the bar-end (r ~ 2.4 kpc), the amounts of molecular gas and the massive stars are enhanced when compared with other disk regions, whereas there is no excess of R_3-2/1-0 and SFE in that region. This means that a simple summation of the star forming regions at the bar-end and the disk cannot reproduce the nuclear starburst of M 83, implying that the spatial variation of the dense gas fraction traced by R_3-2/1-0 governs the spatial variation of SFE in M 83.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, PASJ in press, version with high resolution figures is available via http://www.nro.nao.ac.jp/~z5001km/m83-aste.pd
