M2M modelling of the Galactic disc via PRIMAL: Fitting to Gaia Error Added Data
We have adapted our made-to-measure (M2M) algorithm PRIMAL to use mock Milky
Way like data constructed from an N-body barred galaxy with a boxy bulge in a
known dark matter potential. We use M0 giant stars as tracers, with the
expected error of the ESA space astrometry mission Gaia. We demonstrate the
process of constructing mock Gaia data from an N-body model, including the
conversion of a galactocentric Cartesian coordinate N-body model into
equatorial coordinates and how to add error to it for a single stellar type. We
then describe the modifications made to PRIMAL to work with observational
error. This paper demonstrates that PRIMAL can recover the radial profiles of
the surface density, radial velocity dispersion, vertical velocity dispersion
and mean rotational velocity of the target disc, along with the pattern speed
of the bar, to a reasonable degree of accuracy despite the lack of accurate
target data. We also construct mock data which take into account dust
extinction and show that PRIMAL recovers the structure and kinematics of the
disc reasonably well. In other words, the expected accuracy of the Gaia data is
good enough for PRIMAL to recover these global properties of the disc, at least

Peculiar Behavior of Si Cluster Ions in Solid Al
A peculiar ion behavior is found in a Si cluster, moving with a speed of
~0.22c (c: speed of light) in a solid Al plasma: the Si ion, moving behind the
forward moving Si ion closely in a several angstrom distance in the cluster,
feels the wake field generated by the forward Si. The interaction potential on
the rear Si may balance the deceleration backward force by itself with the
acceleration forward force by the forward Si in the longitudinal moving
direction. The forward Si would be decelerated normally. However, the
deceleration of the rear Si, moving behind closely, would be reduced
significantly, and the rear Si may catch up and overtake the forward moving Si
in the cluster during the Si cluster interaction with the high-density Al
plasma
Galactic Cannibalism: the Origin of the Magellanic Stream
We are in a privileged location in the Universe which allows us to observe
galactic interactions from close range -- the merger of our two nearest dwarf
satellite galaxies, the LMC and SMC. It is important to understand the local
merger process before we can have confidence in understanding mergers at high
redshift. We present high resolution Nbody+SPH simulations of the disruption of
the LMC and SMC and the formation of the Magellanic Stream, and discuss the

Proton acceleration by circularly polarized traveling electromagnetic wave
The acceleration of charged particles, producing collimated mono-energetic
beams, over short distances holds the promise to offer new tools in medicine
and diagnostics. Here, we consider a possible mechanism for accelerating
protons to high energies by using a phase-modulated circularly polarized
electromagnetic wave propagating along a constant magnetic field. It is
observed that a plane wave with dimensionless amplitude of 0.1 is capable to
accelerate a 1 KeV proton to 386 MeV under optimum conditions. Finally we
discuss possible limitations of the acceleration scheme.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure
