Replica symmetry breaking transition of the weakly anisotropic Heisenberg spin glass in magnetic fields
The spin and the chirality orderings of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin
glass with the weak random anisotropy are studied under applied magnetic fields
by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. A replica symmetry breaking transition
occurs in the chiral sector accompanied by the simultaneous spin-glass order.
The ordering behavior differs significantly from that of the Ising SG, despite
the similarity in the global symmetry. Our observation is consistent with the
spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario of a spin-glass transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Electrical polarization of nuclear spins in a breakdown regime of quantum Hall effect
We have developed a method for electrical polarization of nuclear spins in
quantum Hall systems. In a breakdown regime of odd-integer quantum Hall effect
(QHE), excitation of electrons to the upper Landau subband with opposite spin
polarity dynamically polarizes nuclear spins through the hyperfine interaction.
The polarized nuclear spins in turn accelerate the QHE breakdown, leading to
hysteretic voltage-current characteristics of the quantum Hall conductor.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
Ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass in two dimensions
The spin and the chirality orderings of the Heisenberg spin glass in two
dimensions with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling are investigated by
equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. Particular attention is paid to the
behavior of the spin and the chirality correlation lengths. In order to observe
the true asymptotic behavior, fairly large system size L\gsim 20 (L the linear
dimension of the system) appears to be necessary. It is found that both the
spin and the chirality order only at zero temperature. At high temperatures,
the chiral correlation length stays shorter than spin correlation length,
whereas at lower temperatures below the crossover temperature T_\times, the
chiral correlation length exceeds the spin correlation length. The spin and the
chirality correlation-length exponents are estimated above T_\times to be
\nu_SG=0.9+-0.2 and \nu_CG=2.1+-0.3, respectively. These values are close to
the previous estimates on the basis of the domain-wall-energy calculation.
Discussion is given about the asymptotic critical behavior realized below
T_\times.Comment: to appear in a special issue of J. Phys.
Ordering of the Heisenberg Spin Glass in High Dimensions
Ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian
coupling is investigated by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations in four and
five dimensions. Ordering of the mean-field Heisenberg spin-glass is also
studied for comparison. Particular attention is paid to the nature of the
spin-glass and the chiral-glass orderings. Our numerical data suggest that, in
five dimensions, the model exhibits a single spin-glass transition at a finite
temperature, where the spin-glass order accompanying the simultaneous
chiral-glass order sets in. In four dimensions, by contrast, the model exhibits
a chiral-glass transition at a finite temperature, not accompanying the
standard spin-glass order. The critical region associated with the chiral-glass
transition, however, is very narrow, suggesting that dimension four is close to
the marginal dimensionality.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figure
Observation of Zeeman effect in topological surface state with distinct material dependence
The helical Dirac fermions on the surface of topological insulators host
novel relativistic quantum phenomena in solids. Manipulating spins of
topological surface state (TSS) represents an essential step towards exploring
the theoretically predicted exotic states related to time reversal symmetry
(TRS) breaking via magnetism or magnetic field. Understanding Zeeman effect of
TSS and determining its g-factor are pivotal for such manipulations in the
latter form of TRS breaking. Here, we report those direct experimental
observations in Bi2Se3 and Sb2Te2Se by spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling
microscopy. The Zeeman shifting of zero mode Landau level is identified
unambiguously by judiciously excluding the extrinsic influences associated with
the non-linearity in the TSS band dispersion and the spatially varying
potential. The g-factors of TSS in Bi2Se3 and Sb2Te2Se are determined to be 18
and -6, respectively. This remarkable material dependence opens a new route to
control the spins in the TSS.Comment: main text: 17 pages, 4 figures; supplementary: 15 pages, 7 figure
Stochastic transitions of attractors in associative memory models with correlated noise
We investigate dynamics of recurrent neural networks with correlated noise to
analyze the noise's effect. The mechanism of correlated firing has been
analyzed in various models, but its functional roles have not been discussed in
sufficient detail. Aoyagi and Aoki have shown that the state transition of a
network is invoked by synchronous spikes. We introduce two types of noise to
each neuron: thermal independent noise and correlated noise. Due to the effects
of correlated noise, the correlation between neural inputs cannot be ignored,
so the behavior of the network has sample dependence. We discuss two types of
associative memory models: one with auto- and weak cross-correlation
connections and one with hierarchically correlated patterns. The former is
similar in structure to Aoyagi and Aoki's model. We show that stochastic
transition can be presented by correlated rather than thermal noise. In the
latter, we show stochastic transition from a memory state to a mixture state
using correlated noise. To analyze the stochastic transitions, we derive a
macroscopic dynamic description as a recurrence relation form of a probability
density function when the correlated noise exists. Computer simulations agree
with theoretical results.Comment: 21 page
