Reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves from a nonlinear anisotropic slab between two linear isotropic media

    No full text
In this paper, the author has studied the reflection from and transmission through a homogenous nonlinear anisotropic slab (anisotropy being due to an external magnetic field) bounded by two linear isotropic media. Nonlinear equations describing the growth of the two modes of propagation of an electromagnetic wave in the direction of the magnetic field, in an anisotropic nonlinear medium, have been set up and solved; the solutions have been used to obtain expressions for the reflected and transmitted components of the incident wave. The simpler problem of the reflection and transmission from an isotropic nonlinear slab has also been discussed as a special case

Nonlinear sum and difference frequency generation in an inhomogeneous plasma

    No full text
An analytical study is made of the nonlinear generation of the sum and difference frequency components in the current density in a plasma due to two alternating electric fields, an electron density gradient and a tempreature gradient. The results of this study have been used in investigating the nonlinear growth of sum and difference frequency waves in a plasma when two electromagnetic waves of different frequencies are propagating along the same direction in it and, also, the magnitude of these frequency components in the reflected wave from a plasma free space interface when the two electromagnetic waves are incident normally on the interface

Non-linear generation of third harmonic in a magnetoplasma

In this communication, the authors have obtained an expression for the third harmonic component of the current density in a magnetoplasma, when the elastic field is at right angles to the direction of the magnetic field, by setting up and solving Boltzmann's transfer equation for electrons; in the expansion of the distribution function of electron velocities, the coefficient of vx2 has also been taken into account. This expression has been substituted n the appropriate wave equation and the solutions have been used to study the generation of third harmonic of an electromagnetic wave in a magnetoplasma and on reflection from a magnetoplasma free-space interface, when the direction of propagation of the wave is along the magnetic field. Some numerical results depicting the phenomenon of resonance have also been given. An interesting result is that, when a pure mode of the fundamental propagates in a magnetoplasma, only the, other mode of the third harmonic will be generated

Nonlinear second harmonic generation in an inhomogeneous plasma

In this paper the authors have studied the nonlinear generation of the second harmonic component in the current density in an inhomogeneous plasma due to a sinusoidal electric field, a density gradient and a temperature gradient. The appropriate Boltzmann's transfer equation for electrons has been solved to obtain an expression for the second harmonic component of current density which has then been used in studying the nonlinear growth of the second harmonic of an electromagnetic wave in an inhomogeneous plasma and also the magnitude of the second harmonic component in the reflected wave from an inhomogeneous plasma-free space interface
