Observations of OJ 287 from the Geodetic VLBI Archive of the Washington Correlator
We present 27 geodetic VLBI maps of OJ 287 obtained from the archive of the
Washington correlator. The observations presented here were made between 1990
October and 1996 December. During this period a sequence of six superluminal
components has been identified. We measured the proper motion of these
components to be approximately 0.5 mas/yr, which is about twice as high as that
seen in previous VLBI observations. These results imply a higher component
ejection rate than previously observed, in good agreement with the observed
occurrences of radio outbursts. We have examined a possible connection between
VLBI components and optical flares in the framework of a binary black hole

Multiple energetic injections in a strong spike-like solar burst
An intense and fast spike-like solar burst was built up of short time scale structures superimposed on an underlying gradual emission, the time evolution of which shows remarkable proportionality between hard X-ray and microwave fluxes. The finer time structure were best defined at mm-microwaves. At the peak of the event, the finer structures repeat every 30x60ms. The more slowly varying component with a time scale of about 1 second was identified in microwave hard X-rays throughout the burst duration. It is suggested that X-ray fluxes might also be proportional to the repetition rate of basic units of energy injection (quasi-quantized). The relevant parameters of one primary energy release site are estimated both in the case where hard X-rays are produced primarily by thick-target bremsstrahlung, and when they are purely thermal. Simulation of a High-Frequency Link of Phase Comparison Protection of Transmission Lines for Optimization its Settings
The objective of this work is to determine the influence of high-frequency link (HFL) on functioning of phase comparison protection (PCP) through the usage of detailed models that take into account specific features of the PCP and processes in HFL. The article describes the case of the most common variant of the high frequency signal transmission by using a scheme 'phase-to-ground'. To verify suggested solution the developed mathematical model of HFL has been studied. Presented simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving the problem
Vector competence of Aedes japonicus for chikungunya and dengue viruses
The Asian bush mosquito Aedes japonicus japonicus (Theobald, 1901) [=Ochlerotatus japonicus (sensu Reinert et al., 2004) =Hulecoeteomyia japonica (sensu Reinert et al., 2006)], has invaded large parts of North America and has recently started to spread in Central-Western Europe. The species is suspected to act as a bridge vector of West Nile virus but nothing or very little is known about its vector competence for Chikungunya and Dengue viruses. Here, we report on experiments of laboratory infections of Ae. japonicus with CHIKV and DENV, demonstrating that the species has a vector potential for both viruses. Considering the high abundance of the species in urban environments and its ability to feed on human, these results plead to include this species when processing risk assessments for mosquito-borne diseases
Non-equilibrium Relaxation Study of Ferromagnetic Transition in Double-Exchange Systems
Ferromagnetic transition in double-exchange systems is studied by
non-equilibrium relaxation technique combined with Monte Carlo calculations.
Critical temperature and critical exponents are estimated from relaxation of
the magnetic moment. The results are consistent with the previous Monte Carlo
results in thermal equilibrium. The exponents estimated by these independent
techniques suggest that the universality class of this transition is the same
as that of short-range interaction models but is different from the mean-field

Reconstructing Deconstruction: High-Velocity Cloud Distance Through Disruption Morphology
We present Arecibo L-band Feed Array 21-cm observations of a sub-complex of
HVCs at the tip of the Anti-Center Complex. These observations show
morphological details that point to interaction with the ambient halo medium
and differential drag within the cloud sub-complex. We develop a new technique
for measuring cloud distances, which relies upon these observed morphological
and kinematic characteristics, and show that it is consistent with H-alpha
distances. These results are consistent with distances to HVCs and halo

Median Statistics, H_0, and the Accelerating Universe
(Abridged) We develop median statistics that provide powerful alternatives to
chi-squared likelihood methods and require fewer assumptions about the data.
Applying median statistics to Huchra's compilation of nearly all estimates of
the Hubble constant, we find a median value H_0=67 km/s/Mpc. Median statistics
assume only that the measurements are independent and free of systematic
errors. This estimate is arguably the best summary of current knowledge because
it uses all available data and, unlike other estimates, makes no assumption
about the distribution of measurement errors. The 95% range of purely
statistical errors is +/- 2 km/s/Mpc. The statistical precision of this result
leads us to analyze the range of possible systematic errors in the median,
which we estimate to be roughly +/- 5 km/s/Mpc (95% limits), dominating over
the statistical errors. A Bayesian median statistics treatment of high-redshift
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) apparent magnitude versus redshift data from Riess
et al. yields a posterior probability that the cosmological constant Lambda > 0
of 70 or 89%, depending on the prior information used. The posterior
probability of an open universe is about 47%. Analysis of the Perlmutter et al.
high-redshift SNe Ia data show the best-fit flat-Lambda model favored over the
best-fit Lambda = 0 open model by odds of 366:1; corresponding Riess et al.
odds are 3:1 (assuming prior odds of 1:1).Median statistics analyses of the SNe
Ia data do not rule out a time-variable Lambda model, and may even favor it
over a time-independent Lambda and a Lambda = 0 open model.Comment: Significant revisions include discussion of systematic errors in the

A directed path whose edges are assigned labels "up", "down", "right", or
"left" is called \emph{four-directional}, and \emph{three-directional} if at
most three out of the four labels are used. A \emph{direction-consistent
embedding} of an \mbox{-vertex} four-directional path on a set of
points in the plane is a straight-line drawing of where each vertex of
is mapped to a distinct point of and every edge points to the direction
specified by its label. We study planar direction-consistent embeddings of
three- and four-directional paths and provide a complete picture of the problem
