Mechanical harvesting of leafy greens on small farms

    Get PDF
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (page 47).Over the last century and a half, farming practices have been revolutionized by the advent of mechanical harvesters, but there is a disparity between available agricultural technology and the technology used in the farm equipment that is affordable for operators of small farms. The harvesting practices for salad greens from small farms is just one example of this disconnect. This thesis is a historical and design study of mechanical salad green harvesters for small farms. The designs consist of a frame with power, cutting and collection systems mounted to the frame. Developing an inexpensive salad greens harvester would help small produce farms in one way, but it is only a step toward the overall transition inventors, entrepreneurs and manufacturers need to make toward equipping small farms with the technology that is already in use on large farms. Many consumers have begun deliberately purchasing from local sources. It would be advantageous for farmers and manufacturers alike if agricultural industries began deliberately addressing the demand from small farms.by Kathleen Kraines.S.B

Qualitative methods are carried out to find out the dodol business characteristics that are presented in non-financial aspects in descriptive form, tables, charts or images, graphics such as process/production aspects, marketing aspects, legal aspects, environmental aspects, environmental aspects. Quantitative methods uses quantitative numbers regarding financial feasibility such as Net Present Value (NPV), Net B / C Ratio, Internal Rate Return (IRR), Payback Period (PP). There search result showed by using its own capital, UD Mandiri salak dodol business is declared feasible with an NPV value of Rp103.045.440, IRR (Internal Rate Return) or investment return of 60%, more than the UKM interest rate ( 6%) and Net B / C Ratio of 1,012, greater than one and payback period for two years.*jnkd+erprm

Localization of Caveolin-1 and C-SRC in Mature and Differentiating Photoreceptors: Raft Proteins Co-Distribute With Rhodopsin During Development

    Get PDF
Numerous biochemical and morphological studies have provided insight into the distribution pattern of caveolin-1 and the presence of membrane rafts in the vertebrate retina. To date however, studies have not addressed the localization profile of raft specific proteins during development. Therefore the purpose of our studies was to follow the localization pattern of caveolin-1, phosphocaveolin-1 and c-src in the developing retina and compare it to that observed in adults. Specific antibodies were used to visualize the distribution of caveolin-1, c-src, a kinase phosphorylating caveolin-1, and phospho-caveolin-1. The labeling pattern of this scaffolded complex was compared to those of rhodopsin and rhodopsin kinase. Samples were analyzed at various time points during postnatal development and compared to adult retinas. The immunocytochemical studies were complemented with immunoblots and immunoprecipitation studies. In the mature retina caveolin-1 and c-src localized mainly to the cell body and IS of photoreceptors, with only very weakly labeled OS. In contrast, phospho-caveolin-1 was only detectable in the OS of photoreceptors. During development we followed the expression and distribution profile of these proteins in a temporal sequence with special attention to the period when OS formation is most robust. Double labeling immunocytochemistry and immunoprecipitation showed rhodopsin to colocalize and co-immunoprecipitate with caveolin-1 and c-src. Individual punctate structures between the outer limiting membrane and the outer plexiform layer were seen at P10 to be labeled by both rhodopsin and caveolin-1 as well as by rhodopsin and c-src, respectively. These studies suggest that membrane raft specific proteins are co-distributed during development, thereby pointing to a role for such complexes in OS formation. In addition, the presence of small punctate structures containing caveolin-1, c-src and rhodopsin raise the possibility that these proteins may transport together to OS during development and that caveolin-1 exists predominantly in a phosphorylated form in the OS

Analyzing Pili Nut Value Chains in Sorsogon Province, Philippines

    Get PDF
The importance of the pili nut (Canarium ovatum Engl.) industry cannot be discounted due to its immense domestic potential in Sorsogon Province, Philippines, where 62% out of the total volume of canarium nut production in the Bicol Region is concentrated. This paper examined the pili nut value chain network in the study area. Supplemented by secondary data sources, primary data gathering was conducted involving interviews with 15 pili farmers, 30 processors, and 20 traders located in Sorsogon City and 5 other pili-growing towns in Sorsogon Province. Analytical tools such as descriptive and net margin analyses were used. Results showed that farmers, processors, processor-wholesaler-retailers, processor-retailers, wholesaler-retailers, and retailers comprised the value chain. Four pili pulp and shelled pili chains where processors were not participants were identified while 12 dried kernel chains were mapped out. Selling dried kernel pili during the lean season gives farmers the highest value at PhP147.94 per kilogram rather than selling raw or shelled pili where returns are only one-fifth of this value. Traders refrain from buying dried kernel pili from farmers since they prefer buying pili with pulp and shelled pili so they can do the processing themselves. Chain problems include the lack of technical, financial, and information support; scattered location of pili farms; and low levels of product innovation. Recommendations offered include forming a cooperative or consolidating group to assemble all harvests, justify the purchase of depulping and other processing equipment, hasten production and processing technology transfer, and increase competitiveness

Developing educational materials and providing trainings in American Indian communities is a highly rewarding activity. However, to do so successfully a number of complex issues must be faced and cultural-tailored strategies to promote awareness must be developed based on the unique traditions of each tribe. In this paper we describe the educational activities conducted over a four year period by the Southwest American Indian Collaborative Network, a project funded by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. Activities fell into two broad areas: dissemination of cancer information through trainings and workshops and development of culturally-tailored educational materials
