A functional analysis of two transdiagnostic, emotion-focused interventions on nonsuicidal self-injury
OBJECTIVE: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent and associated with clinically significant consequences. Developing time-efficient and cost-effective interventions for NSSI has proven difficult given that the critical components for NSSI treatment remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the specific effects of mindful emotion awareness training and cognitive reappraisal, 2 transdiagnostic treatment strategies that purportedly address the functional processes thought to maintain self-injurious behavior, on NSSI urges and acts.
METHOD: Using a counterbalanced, combined series (multiple baseline and data-driven phase change) aggregated single-case experimental design, the unique and combined impact of these 2 4-week interventions was evaluated among 10 diagnostically heterogeneous self-injuring adults. Ecological momentary assessment was used to provide daily ratings of NSSI urges and acts during all study phases.
RESULTS: Eight of 10 participants demonstrated clinically meaningful reductions in NSSI; 6 participants responded to 1 intervention alone, whereas 2 participants responded after the addition of the alternative intervention. Group analyses indicated statistically significant overall effects of study phase on NSSI, with fewer NSSI urges and acts occurring after the interventions were introduced. The interventions were also associated with moderate to large reductions in self-reported levels of anxiety and depression, and large improvements in mindful emotion awareness and cognitive reappraisal skills.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that brief mindful emotion awareness and cognitive reappraisal interventions can lead to reductions in NSSI urges and acts. Transdiagnostic, emotion-focused therapeutic strategies delivered in time-limited formats may serve as practical yet powerful treatment approaches, especially for lower-risk self-injuring individuals.Dr. Barlow receives royalties from Oxford University Press, Guilford Publications Inc., Cengage Learning, and Pearson Publishing. Coastal Recreation in Southern New England: Results from a Regional Survey
This paper presents a summary of coastal recreation of New England residents from a survey conducted in the summer of 2018. The management of New England’s coasts benefits from understanding the value of coastal recreation and the factors influencing recreational behavior. To address this need, the survey collected the geographic location and trip details for both day and overnight visits to any type of location on the New England coast for a range of water recreation activities, providing a comprehensive view of coastal recreation in the region. This paper summarizes participation in various types of water recreation activities, including beachgoing, swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, boating, and other coastal recreation activities. We quantify demand for coastal recreation using participation and effort models that disaggregate the dimensions of recreational behavior over space and census demographics. This provides insights on the scale and location of beneficiaries of this important human use of the natural environment. We found that 71% of people in the surveyed region participate in coastal recreation and engage in a wide range of coastal recreation activities at varied locations from open-ocean-facing coastal beaches to sheltered, estuarine ways to water. On average, people in the region take 37 trips to recreate on the coast of New England in a year, spending 167 hours per year visiting recreation sites and 66 hours traveling. This adds up to nearly 170.5 million trips from our sample region, 772.4 million hours of recreation time, and 304.6 million hours of travel time. Distance to the coast, demographics, and recreational activities affect how often people go and how much time they spend on coastal recreation
Sense of Place and Water Quality: Applying Sense of Place Metrics to Better Understand Community Impacts of Changes in Water Quality
Understanding people’s values for coastal and freshwater areas is critical for identifying concerns and motivating people to protect water resources and for informing management decisions. Sense of place is a social indicator that captures the relative value that different people hold for specific places. Its use in water quality assessments remains extremely limited but based on lessons from other environmental fields, sense of place offers promise as a tool for measuring an important aspect of the social value of water quality. In this chapter, we propose a quantitative sense-of-place scale and additional qualitative questions which can be used in conjunction with biophysical water quality data and water quality perceptions data to better understand how people’s values change with improvements or degradations in water quality
Specimens at the Center: An Informatics Workflow and Toolkit for Specimen-level analysis of Public DNA database data
Major public DNA databases — NCBI GenBank, the DNA DataBank of Japan (DDBJ), and the European Molecular Biology
Laboratory (EMBL) — are invaluable biodiversity libraries. Systematists and other biodiversity scientists commonly mine these databases for
sequence data to use in phylogenetic studies, but such studies generally use only the taxonomic identity of the sequenced tissue, not the
specimen identity. Thus studies that use DNA supermatrices to construct phylogenetic trees with species at the tips typically do not take
advantage of the fact that for many individuals in the public DNA databases, several DNA regions have been sampled; and for many species,
two or more individuals have been sampled. Thus these studies typically do not make full use of the multigene datasets in public DNA
databases to test species coherence and select optimal sequences to represent a species. In this study, we introduce a set of tools developed
in the R programming language to construct individual-based trees from NCBI GenBank data and present a set of trees for the genus Carex
(Cyperaceae) constructed using these methods. For the more than 770 species for which we found sequence data, our approach recovered an
average of 1.85 gene regions per specimen, up to seven for some specimens, and more than 450 species represented by two or more specimens.
Depending on the subset of genes analyzed, we found up to 42% of species monophyletic. We introduce a simple tree statistic—the
Taxonomic Disparity Index (TDI)—to assist in curating specimen-level datasets and provide code for selecting maximally informative (or,
conversely, minimally misleading) sequences as species exemplars. While tailored to the Carex dataset, the approach and code presented in
this paper can readily be generalized to constructing individual-level trees from large amounts of data for any species group
Asteroid Belts in Debris Disk Twins: VEGA and FOMALHAUT
Vega and Fomalhaut, are similar in terms of mass, ages, and global debris
disk properties; therefore, they are often referred as "debris disk twins". We
present Spitzer 10-35 um spectroscopic data centered at both stars, and
identify warm, unresolved excess emission in the close vicinity of Vega for the
first time. The properties of the warm excess in Vega are further characterized
with ancillary photometry in the mid infrared and resolved images in the
far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths. The Vega warm excess shares many
similar properties with the one found around Fomalhaut. The emission shortward
of ~30 um from both warm components is well described as a blackbody emission
of ~170 K. Interestingly, two other systems, eps Eri and HR 8799, also show
such an unresolved warm dust using the same approach. These warm components may
be analogous to the solar system's zodiacal dust cloud, but of far greater. The
dust temperature and tentative detections in the submillimeter suggest the warm
excess arises from dust associated with a planetesimal ring located near the
water-frost line and presumably created by processes occurring at similar
locations in other debris systems as well. We also review the properties of the
2 um hot excess around Vega and Fomalhaut, showing that the dust responsible
for the hot excess is not spatially associated with the dust we detected in the
warm belt. We suggest it may arise from hot nano grains trapped in the magnetic
field of the star. Finally, the separation between the warm and cold belt is
rather large with an orbital ratio >~10 in all four systems. In light of the
current upper limits on the masses of planetary objects and the large gap, we
discuss the possible implications for their underlying planetary architecture,
and suggest that multiple, low-mass planets likely reside between the two belts

Differences in determinants: racialized obstetric care and increases in U.S. state labor induction rates
Induction of labor (IOL) rates in the United States have nearly tripled since 1990. We examine official U.S. birth records to document increases in states’ IOL rates among pregnancies to Black, Latina, and White women. We test if the increases are associated with changes in demographic characteristics and risk factors among states’ racial-ethnic childbearing populations. Among pregnancies to White women, increases in state IOL rates are strongly associated with changes in risk factors among White childbearing populations. However, the rising IOL rates among pregnancies to Black and Latina women are not due to changing factors in their own populations but are instead driven by changing factors among states’ White childbearing populations. The results suggest systemic racism may be shaping U.S. obstetric care whereby care is not “centered at the margins” but is instead responsive to characteristics in states’ White populations
Valuing Coastal Beaches and Closures Using Benefit Transfer: An Application to Barnstable, Massachusetts
Each year, millions of Americans visit beaches for recreation, resulting in significant social welfare benefits and economic activity. Considering the high use of coastal beaches for recreation, closures due to bacterial contamination have the potential to greatly impact coastal visitors and communities. We used readily-available information to develop two transferable models that, together, provide estimates for the value of a beach day as well as the lost value due to a beach closure. We modeled visitation for beaches in Barnstable, Massachusetts on Cape Cod through panel regressions to predict visitation by type of day, for the season, and for lost visits when a closure was posted. We used a meta-analysis of existing studies conducted throughout the United States to estimate a consumer surplus value of a beach visit of around $22 for our study area, accounting for water quality at beaches by using past closure history. We applied this value through a benefit transfer to estimate the value of a beach day, and combined it with lost town revenue from parking to estimate losses in the event of a closure. The results indicate a high value for beaches as a public resource and show significant losses to the town when beaches are closed due to an exceedance in bacterial concentrations
LINE Retrotransposon RNA Is an Essential Structural and Functional Epigenetic Component of a Core Neocentromeric Chromatin
We have previously identified and characterized the phenomenon of ectopic human centromeres, known as neocentromeres. Human neocentromeres form epigenetically at euchromatic chromosomal sites and are structurally and functionally similar to normal human centromeres. Recent studies have indicated that neocentromere formation provides a major mechanism for centromere repositioning, karyotype evolution, and speciation. Using a marker chromosome mardel(10) containing a neocentromere formed at the normal chromosomal 10q25 region, we have previously mapped a 330-kb CENP-A–binding domain and described an increased prevalence of L1 retrotransposons in the underlying DNA sequences of the CENP-A–binding clusters. Here, we investigated the potential role of the L1 retrotransposons in the regulation of neocentromere activity. Determination of the transcriptional activity of a panel of full-length L1s (FL-L1s) across a 6-Mb region spanning the 10q25 neocentromere chromatin identified one of the FL-L1 retrotransposons, designated FL-L1b and residing centrally within the CENP-A–binding clusters, to be transcriptionally active. We demonstrated the direct incorporation of the FL-L1b RNA transcripts into the CENP-A–associated chromatin. RNAi-mediated knockdown of the FL-L1b RNA transcripts led to a reduction in CENP-A binding and an impaired mitotic function of the 10q25 neocentromere. These results indicate that LINE retrotransposon RNA is a previously undescribed essential structural and functional component of the neocentromeric chromatin and that retrotransposable elements may serve as a critical epigenetic determinant in the chromatin remodelling events leading to neocentromere formation
