Tooth fairy myth: a project for child oral health education
Early prevention in oral medicine is particularly relevant as well as health education programs. The present research fits to the situation-context of message communication on oral health education. Through a questionnaire based on Tooth Fairy Myth, fifty children (6 - 12 years), were asked to describe the appearance, characteristics, and actions regarding the Tooth Fairy. The resource to the symbolic, by the means of puppets-theatre, acts as an “imaginary - transmitter”, thus motivating the child to develop imagination, creativeness and enabling the improvement of the visual-motor perception. In the field of oral health promotion, the finger-puppet theatre movie appears as a child’s “imagination performer”, at the level of information given on oral health, namely in what concerns the oral routine of hygiene and the promotion of healthy eating behaviours.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
X-ray vision: mental representation of adolescent’s oral cavity undergoing orthodontic treatment
Article licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International LicenseIntroduction: Oral Hygiene is notoriously relevant in the context of orthodontic treatment; however, oral health self-care is often considered inadequate. Objective: The objectives of this study focus on the perception of the inner oral cavity in patients and seek the enabling of Self-care through the empowerment of their knowledge.Materials and Methods: 25 subjects were asked to draw the interior of their oral cavity before (M1) and after (M2) going through orthodontic treatment. The percepts were then quoted using a content analysis grid of analytical categories and subcategories that was created especially for this study. Results and Conclusion: The results are suggesting that there are differences in the level of investment with a diminution in the representations of the inner oral cavity after the wear of orthodontic appliance. In addition to this, the initial directive was seemed to not be fully perceived by the subjects as most of the patients represented the inner oral cavity as an Extra-Oral configuration followed with a Frontal View Smile.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The present study aimed to understand the self-perception of oral hygiene in the adolescents: thus, we intended to identify the mental representation of the intra-oral cavity to enable the patients to make oral health self-care satisfactory. In this sense, questionnaires were submitted at different time-points, and at the end, a teaching act was performed to the patient accompanied. This study was carried out in four different timepoints:
i) M1- application of Questionnaire 1, where patients were asked to draw their intra-oral cavity before and after undergoing orthodontic treatment; ii) M2- application of Questionnaire 2 (before the pedagogical act), consisting of questions about knowledge of oral hygiene; iii) M3- Teaching act using macromodels; iv) M4-application of Questionnaire 2 (after the pedagogical act). According to the results obtained, we proceeded to elaborate a content analysis grid consisting of analytical categories and subcategories. The analytical instruments were applied to 200 adolescents who attended an orthodontic consultation at Egas Moniz University Clinic; the patients ranged in age from 10 to 24 years old, with ongoing orthodontic treatment (fixed appliance).
Descriptive and comparative statistical methods were then performed, using the IBM SPSS program. It was possible to observe differences in terms of oral health knowledge as well as, in the mental representation of the interior of their intra-oral cavity (p>0,05).
On the other hand, we noticed that the main reason for seeking orthodontic treatment seems to be linked to esthetics.
