In this dissertation a meshless method is introduced to the hydraulics. An Element-free Galerkin Method, a type of Finite Point Methods (FP) for simulation of two-dimensional shallow water flows in rivers is presented. In this method only the nodal data which may be the same as those used in the Finite Element Methods (FE) and a description of the domain boundary geometry are needed. This makes the method particularly attractive for modelling surface-water flows. The moving least-squares interpolation method is used to construct the trial functions. The domain under consideration is represented through the nodal points. A Galerkin method is applied to obtain the discrete equations from the governing differential equations, resulting in a simultaneous equation system. In order to improve the efficiency of the numerical model, the cell structure for calculation of integrals in Galerkin equations proposed by Belytschko et al. is modified in this contribution such that it fits with the node distribution. The parameters are discussed and their values are suggested. A systematic comparison between the FPM and FEM is performed. In addition, a new method for finding the Voronoi neighbourhood of a point is proposed. In comparison to the FEM, the FPM has the following advantages: (1) The manual work for data preparation is reduced because of the meshless property: (2) The unknown variables and their gradients are continuous in the entire domain; (3) By modification or refinement of the nodal distribution the FPM is advantageous, by which a node can be easily moved, removed or added in the domain, while by the FEM a local mesh modification and the corresponding nodal and element renumbering are necessary; and (4) the FPM satisfies the Babuska-Brezzi condition etc. (orig.)SIGLEAvailable from TIB Hannover: RA 2037(197) / FIZ - Fachinformationszzentrum Karlsruhe / TIB - Technische InformationsbibliothekDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Bonn (Germany)DEGerman
